Went to the great clips in my area a little over a month ago to get my ends trimmed. Without even bringing it up, the stylist warned me about getting curly cuts. She said she has seen so many messed up heads of hair from it. I have been skeptical of this trend from the start. The worst part about all of this is that the two stylists are standing 10 toes down on their method. Nothing is perfect. Everything has flaws. In my opinion, people wouldn't be so upset if the cut was marketed as a shaping method only and not a corrective + styling/shaping method. Where I also get lost is how their no oils no raw butters went from a detox to regimen. I hope the learning lesson from this entire thing is to do what is best for you and not hop on any and every trend.

I feel everything said except one thing is that for many of us the messaging we got was not that it was a trend. It was them selling themselves as THE method of maintaining natural hair and that everything we were doing was damaging our hair making it dry. This was the messaging I received from all of these curly cut stylists that I was following and I followed many just to make sure I was going to follow something that was being said by a lot of people and not just a few. And they all said that it wasn’t a trend, just hair care.

My understanding as an outsider looking in: Black Girl Curls (BGC) = the brand founded by Aishia and Aeleise Cut It Kinky (CIK) = BGC's method of cutting hair See Some Curls (SSC) = BGC's digital course with visual library and tutorials on how to care for kinky coily hair (the course they told you to sign up for, Narada) 30 Day Detox = a challenge which in some ways acts as a promotion for SSC (on some of their lives about the detox, I've heard the course being mentioned as a source of extra information). The challenge has a specific regimen and recommended products ( including shampoos, gels, mousses). One of the biggest features is not using products that have oils/butters within the first 5 ingredients. Related to this is not using raw oils/butters, which became commonly known as 'No Oils No Butters'. They believe oils/butters should only be part of formulated products and not in the first 5 ingredients of a product

The only thing I would add is Cut it Kinky is the professional stylist program and it consists of an in-person visual and hands on training and an online component. It’s about 2.5K and then another 2.5K course to get a certification from them now. There were a ton of stylist that got a certification through the virtual only format 2020-2021 timeframe and they updated the requirements a bit on who they put on their Cut It kinky stylist list

@@chasebeautytoo51 that's interesting to know. So it's approx 5k in total to become certified as a CIK stylist. Is the certification only from them, just for stylists to say 'I am certified by BGC as a CIK stylist'? If so, that is laughable. So in theory, I can make a program on how to shred paper and charge people to become a certified paper shredder as per my standards. Lmao

Keeping it 💯! I can’t say too much but what I can say is start being observant! It takes courage to speak on a subject like this, not all influencers will share they are having issues! They have created close relationships with these stylists and will never speak publicly! Instead fixing their hair privately 🙊they are having webbing, Velcro ends etc! With that being said, pay attention to your hair and how it behaves ! Not everyone story will have an ending like Shelly & I and the other individuals with this method! Regardless if there is one person having issue or 1000 no one experience should be dismissed, it should be looked into seeing what is causing it and changes should be made! Blocking us is very unprofessional! This whole ordeal has certainly opened my eyes about the love of money 💰! I spoke up because it would be disingenuous of me since I shared this method on my platform!

Another factor BGC has not addressed is how quite a number of stylists were deemed "BGC Approved" after only participating in their old stylist platform, submitting a few pictures of their work, & getting listed on their website as "Approved". As a result, they never actually confirmed that their techniques were properly being learned & applied. As a result, many customers are going to novice stylists who may not have mastered their technique nor attended any intensive training on techniques BGC advertised as new & requiring experience to perfect. It is grossly dishonest/misleading & may have also contributed to the negative experiences. They need to take greater responsibility for their business practices, the treatment of their consumers, & the lack of long-term research behind their practices. Granted, they gave some good foundational information, but they aren't the end all be all. They need to circle back & learn from Deva. They had a similar downfall.

The message on washing hair more frequently was important, but in simplifying the message to no oils, butters plus some of the styling recommendations, they started to cause as much damage as the practices they shunned.

I think they thought they could use white stylists methods on black hair to make the hair experience simpler for everyone. But our hair is way too different (even amongst ourselves) for that to work. We always had to tweak things here and there. This is becoming the biggest scandal of the natural hair community and it doesn’t need to be. But if they like it I love it for them.

And to be fair, various KZbinrs coined and ran with ‘no oils/butters’ (along with the common misconception that they eliminate all oils and butters from a natural hair routine. BGC’s ideology is no raw oils/butters in addition to what’s already in formulated products and no oils/butters in the top 5 ingredients of a formulated product) BGC sticks to 30 Day Hair Detox. ‘Less oils less butters’ would be a more accurate description.

Actually the commenter might have been talking about the leave-in conditioner that also doubles a styler(that’s what the bottle itself is labeled as, not sure if it’s true cause it’s my first leave-in conditioner outside of the ones used by stylists on me), it’s from Adwoa beauty.

@AfrikanHairGod BGC and SSC states that a leave-in is a non hold styler. They believe it serves no benefit when wearing hair in wash and goes for tight textured hair. It’s it better suited for wearing an undefined Afro because it provides no hold or for looser textures. When used under gels, it reduces the hold. So they suggested using botanic gels with film forming humectants in place of a leave-in which they referred to as a base gel. They made an exception to Kinky Curly Knot Today saying it was part of a system and was actually the styler. They also said leave-in could be used under foams styler for twist outs (but not wng), but I was still confused by the answer of why.

When I searched "curly cuts" the images that came up were of non-black women, but the description states "this method is tailor made for afro-textured hair..." Maybe the cut works better for those who are less "afro" than others.

Wow they went there because you have a dissagreement.. This could have been a teaching moment because many of us are having issues. It's not fake. It's not like you insulted them. People have legitimate questions and concerns... For my part in my case a lack of using deep conditioning and use of a leave even in wash n go impacted my hair (for the past year I would only deep conditioning once a month and only using leave in with style other than wash n go). Rosie and Shelly confirmed my suspicions and so it helped confirmed certains thing and I had to put back steps that I wasn't doing... They missed an huge opportunity to correct and helped people who believe their teachings. I feel that the some followers are acting like brainwashed and can't accept that people are having issues... Their actions just don’t match (what appears to be) their motives. If I had to say what that was based on what I’ve seen from them, I’d say that motive is to: change the scope of natural hair and natural hair care through wash n gos. It makes no sense to try to change the world, without communicating and interacting with it. I mean my goodness, what about perfecting your process? If not the general public, then at least the stylists that spend hundreds on your classes. Cuz BCG didn’t cut Shelli’s hair, a stylist trained under them did. If her results (as well as others apparently) weren’t intended, then wouldn’t it make more sense to change the way you’re trying to cover these bases? 🤨 troubleshooting their training? Something besides come back behind the paywall again to fix a problem you never intended to buy? Cuz I’m not knocking a hustle. At the very least, ensure that people are getting what they pay for-that’s not unreasonable.

@Coilylady
@Coilylady 11 ай бұрын
@@lunamufon Yes it is cutting it twice for very different reasons once for healthy hair and once for style. the initial trim will remove the split ends so that the splits don’t continue up the hair shaft and cause further damage then you can go back and cut for shape with a curly cut BUT the very nature of cutting curl by curl just to get a desired shape Is part of the problem. Those different lengths wrap around and snag each other and cause havoc. And that’s not even addressing the dryness factor … I could be wrong but I think that’s a pretty accurate summary

So weird how people don’t understand nuance. No raw oils, butter, leave in conditioners, deep conditioners for maximum curl definition. Curl definition =\= hair health. CIK teaches curl by curl cutting. Do not get a curly cut with a stylist who does not cut curl by curl because your ends will be left straggly. Lesson here is the same with any touted “method” of managing natural hair online: eat the meat, spit out the bones. Kayla from What the Kink does a really good job of this. As someone you wants women to feel empowered wearing their natural hair, don’t you think we should be happy that BGC is showcasing that beauty? Inspiring so many to be true to themselves? You guys seem to have a common cause and instead of focusing on that you’d rather play in internet drama and tear their business down over a preference for leave in conditioner. It’s petty

Such a shame that you spend all that time writing all of this and still missed the entire point of this whole ordeal. Keep feeling empowered 👍
@AfrikanHairGod
@AfrikanHairGod Жыл бұрын
The nuance is acknowledging that BGC had expressed that their methodology and cutting technique addresses concerns about shape, definition and damage, specifically split ends. At this point using the argument that people misconstrued their method with usage of leave ins, DCs, oils/butters/etc (user error) is mediocre at best because it's not refuting the deeper issues including but not limited to: 1. For the method to express the use of leave ins and DC to be used as needed, was never emphasized enough because there are clearly so many people that shared their same impression that they could and should do without it. 2. Despite followers going to CIK stylists frequently/regularly, they have not only had their damage NOT addressed, but also reassured that their hair was in tip-top shape with no concern made to address the health and condition of their hair the way BGC had stated that it should. 3. For the ladies to get their hair cut so often and also so much of it to the point where their length retention is stagnated to some extent, while STILL amassing an *extreme & excessive* amount of splitting throughout the majority of length of their hair more than I've seen with people that use heat regularly, use hair color, relax, ect., is crucially concerning. Can split ends natural occur over time? Certainly, but not at such an extreme rate, in such a short amount of time. So what's really weird about you and your comment is that your want to talk about nuance but the only one here who seems to embodying a lack of it is... You. And that is to be expected, assuming that you aren't a natural hair cosmetologist that is expected to know all of the intricacies of hair and damage. Consequently, when you aren't as informed on a topic, instead of trying to attack motive and character, maybe you should spend more time listening so that you can have more meaningful valuable contributions to the conversation. 🤡
