When she said “your comments are offensive to those that spend THOUSANDS…”. Ma’am. It’s offensive to me that I’ve spent thousands over the past 3-4 years and my hair health was compromised. I’m offended when I leave the salon looking busted and have to go home to restyle my hair. I don’t care about your precious stylists and their feelings. I’m offended when I’m told that I don’t know what I know and don’t see what I see with my own eyeballs. We aren’t idiots. 🙄

I opted out the game. I go to a white Aveda Salon with a creative director stylist who is Maori/Polynesian with curly hair. He's my stylist bae. I go to a black trichologist and her daughter for any scalp problems. and guess what 7 years and I still haven't paid thousands. I reject the narrative that black hair has to be one particular way and cost a ridiculous amount of money. It's a scam. Why am I paying 1000 to get my hair did and I'm not Beyonce on a stage? 😅🤣

"Not everything works for everyone." Like seriously...my stylist never does my hair like his other clients or even his hair ( He's Maori/Polynesian) This man will stretch my hair with his fingers before doing my trim in the technique of a straight cut and I love it! All the evenness! the thought I cutting curly by curly fills me with dread. As soon as my ends get too uneven I need to trim to stop the tangles so having such massive differences in curl lengths is not for me!!

I’m a curly hair artist. I totally understand what you’re saying. I have taken cut it kinky amongst other curl cutting classes. At the end of the day what’s important is how my clients want to show up in the world. It’s a fine line and communicating is essential. I use every curl cutting class as just a tool in my tool box to get the best results for my clients. Shape and health. Your point about being able to communicate effectively with clients is so important. A lot of artist def need to take their pride out of it and listen to what their clients are saying.

I’m so sick of people trying to sell us some bs, and sadly people without knowledge will ignore what goes against their very own observations. I am not grasping what she means by we are not comfortable seeing our hair as it is in the moment. I think we all have a grasp on shrinkage and why day 1 hair is different than day 7. That isn’t the problem. The problem lies in when you do their hair week one and then week two they do the same style and the shape is completely different. That is just reaffirming that curly cuts are inconsistent and can be a potential issue for many. As a natural who’s hair is prone to tight coils and shrinkage my hair could hide a cut like that well. But if an asymmetrical cut is what they wanted, or essentially a taper cut they would ask for that. What I’m getting from her response is curly cuts are not to address an issue, or prevent them either. They are for cosmetic purposes, you want a shape here I can give you that, but I didn’t address the concerns you had for your hair. That is why she says she has length and loses length as if she is not cutting her hair in the shape unless she is experiencing considerable breakage at a certain length.

“When people show you who they are, believe them” Motivations here are clear. Now beyond that/them, there are many stylists who do curly cuts, so I appreciate that you are trying to understand the who/what/how/why of this issue. Personally, I get my hair cut curly for shape and blown out for health. So, I guess I don’t experience damage cause I still get my hair cut/trimmed when straight. The two together seems to work best for my hair.

I really have to question what BGC’s motivations and goals are. Is this curly cut movement to help the natural hair community? Or is it just a way to position themselves as an authority on natural hair and gain fame and money from that? Seems like many in the community are trying to come up with their own trends and movements for their own personal gain. Everyone wants to come up with something catchy or ‘profound’ to woo us consumers/clients. From curly cuts to dry rot to kinky hair evolving to break. I don’t know. I’m starting to feel like a lot of this is just to take advantage of unknowingly consumers and make money off of us. Thank you for promoting more simplistic, minimalistic and practical hair care. ❤❤❤

I think it's a little bit of both. I think they genuinely want black women to get comfortable with their natural hair and get past the idea that wash day has to be this overly difficult, 8 hour long experience. They claim they want to simplify natural hair, which is great, but in trying to monetize that idea, they created a method that's somewhat inflexible and almost calls for a blind belief in BGC rather than the ability to question and think critically. I don't like their favorite brands of shampoo and conditioner. Rather than go ask them what to do, I just went back to the products I've trusted and liked for years. I still cleanse, condition, style which is the base of their method, but I deep condition sometimes and my stylist blows my hair out to trim it. I have a shape, but we don't trim for shape, we trim for health. A lot of the people who follow their method and spend a lot of time in their community forget that they can choose to keep what works for them and throw out the rest. Why? Because BGC somewhat discourages that bc it takes away from their bottom line. If they can get people to pay for their community to troubleshoot for months at a time, think of how much more money that is rather than having a free public forum. That said, I'm starting to see their method pop up on free message boards and forums like reddit where people are troubleshooting each other without the extra payment.

Stylist or not, as stated previously, hair stylists are not trained to do curly, kinky or tightly curled hair! With all due respect, if you don’t know what’s going on with your own hair, how are you going to tell anyone how to manage their hair! Narada and Henni are set apart as they have taken a seat to learn their natural hair (as well as their clients) and exposed their trial and error to become the elite talent they are today! Humble yourself, even if you are a stylist with decades of experience under your belt! There is always room for growth (pun intended!)

All the stuff she’s preaching is yet another trend. Everyone wants natural women’s money and are willing to endorse anything to get it. My hair is healthier than hers and I do everything she says not to. That’s not to say there aren’t people that can benefit from from some of her techniques, but be VERY skeptical of people that prescribe the same routine for every head of hair. She’s not even genuinely addressing the actual criticism.

I agree that BGC is not fully addressing the issue of split ends. Aishia seems to be dwelling on unevenness. I don’t think this is a trend per se as if it isn’t a valid strategy for hair care. I think their stylist training needs to be refined and they need to improve their PR. I’ve only been in the game for a couple of years and this seems to be their first major exposure of a flaw in their process. But I do believe this is a flaw that can be fixed if addressed appropriately.

For me, the sides of my hair are the longest and (shrinks less since it's the loosest texture) but there are definitely many other naturals who's fronts are the longest part of their hair or the nape...every head is not the same!

Everything you said is 100% common sense. You don’t need to be a stylist to see what she’s saying doesn’t add up. The goal of a curly cut is to shape the hair so it falls a certain way when it’s in its curly state. It’s not necessarily for maintaining hair health as far as proper trims and healthy ends. Now I personally have been to a stylist who only cut my hair curly, the difference was she understood what how to maintain the health of my hair. She was amazing. I’ve been locd for 15 years now but I remember my consultant telling me how healthy my hair was when I started my locs. Also the curly head in the photos has a lot of damage and most of it is likely from bleach.

I got a curly cut last summer from a stylist in the DMV. She used a rattail comb on my hair to define it and eco styler. Shape on point, health? Nah. I think as a person 20 yrs natural I can tell many of these stylist are not interested in maintaining natural hair but creating definition. I'm still searching for a good stylist, it is so hard but I'm about to bite the bullet and go to the most expensive stylist in my area just because they are the ONLY shop that post natural hair on all it's forms and options.

I literally do not care about definition. Because my hair will break in a hot minute if you don't do her right. I'm more concerned with keeping my hair on my head and I can cut my own hair too without damaging it as I did during the pandemic. In 2009 I asked myself why I was paying money to someone who could not improve the condition of my hair to my satisfaction and I still stick by that.

I’m not a fan of black girl curls either. I have participated in see some curls and I just don’t agree with some of their philosophies. Basically all they are just doing is trying products and telling the consumers if they work well together. In the past I have done that myself. Also, all they recommend or have the most experience in are WNG’s. Not everyone wants to wear wng’s. I feel that if you are a true stylist you will or can do what your consumer is requesting. Secondly, a true curly cut stylist will tell you it’s not a perfect cut! What that tells me is that before we take anyone’s word for what grows out of our head, it is best to do the research of the service we are requesting. Basically curly cuts are not ideal. 😮. I came to this conclusion on my own just by doing research. This being said i quickly cancelled my subscription with black girl curls.

I was just waiting for someone esp a stylist to call this method out. Because honestly using only gel, no leave in, can’t be good for your hair. My hair thrives the most with oils, butters and creams. Which is why I never followed them. I wear wash and go too. But sticking strictly to that is hard no for me. I found their page a year or two ago, and was turned off by her comment to others who didn’t agree with their hair philosophy. She definitely seems to be the more defensive and condescending one that’s always rude to people who comment on their page. I respect that you give her props as a stylist. But what aggravated me the most about them is their marketing of their techniques as the end all be all and isolate work that others have contributed in the natural hair community. They came in pretty much discrediting everyone/everything in the natural hair community. Unfortunately, that only sells for a while because I’m still trying to find clients of theirs with health hair and length retention. I’m all about simplified techniques but it does seem like their simplified techniques benefits them and their pockets most when you enter their salon. Ie -if your client uses oils and butters “wash their dam hair” pun intended, with a good clarifying shampoo. Ie -cut your clients hair using real skills not some search and destroy mission and charging them $200 upwards to cut random coils. If you look at their methodology it really seem like a hustle. Another note, it also seems like she really tries to gaslight people with nonsense. -like she didn’t know how humectants works, everything is user error, and their terminology cringe-yet they hate the term 4c … I digress so I can finishing watching this video

Of course she is. She is just like all the other stylists that I've called out. They can never face the music or discredit anything that I say or present about them. As much as people try to say that I'm wrong or ill-informed, they can never validate their argument the way that I do. The fact that she had no rebuttal or even tried to address the issues says everything I already knew about them. This isn't about being right or wrong. I hope that people can look with a clear lens and see that this is an example of what's wrong with our industry. When you can't put your ego aside to cater to the issues and concerns of your customers, you contribute to the distrust and disconnect of the relationship that stylists have with their clients.

But ppl forget that this method is specifically for ppl who wear their hair natural and in wash and go's 100% of the time, i know she said 90 but i lean more towards 100. I switched over to their method 3 years ago and i havent looked back, curly cuts and all. I have been ebkoying the simplicity, the constant compliments, and the clean scalp. My hair is not colored, doesnt get straightened or stretched its just in its curly state 100 percent of the time and this method works. Same!! My hair was so dry with the no oils and butters. My hair when it was at its best I used oils and butters. Tbh this method dried my hair out I feel like it was hydrated but not moisturized if that makes sense. My hair would curl but lacked luster and thinned out at end and stiff . My hair would just stick up. My hair never did that when using oils and butters. And I experienced more single strand knots and splits with the No oils and butters. I feel that this method with botanicals and no oils make the hair look stiff af and it’s not cute. I never struggled with definition when using oils and butters. As long as my hair was moisturized it curled. Now I don’t know what my hair is doing. And I think I’ve over clarified my hair. Cuz they stress making the hair super clean. But I think I over cleansed 😭😭. We don’t need all these expensive products y’all. Porosity is how long it takes for our hair to receive moisture. I noticed no difference in the rate of absorption when I clarified. Sorry this a lot but just had to rant.

I was going to a popular curly cut stylist in RDC area (Raleigh, Durham, and Cary). I realized after watching this video that she must have learned from BGC because everything said in this video matched her to the T!! From the curly cuts every few months, to the Uncle Funky's, to the no oils and butters, and condescending attitude. She even blamed me for my hair problems, even after I told her that I was only following the routine SHE gave me. On top of that, I came to be a "hair model" for her bootleg hair course she was creating and waited 5 hours, just to be given a wash n go instead of the style I asked for from the beginning. She even sent me to Target to go get batteries for her TV remote. I never went back to her again.

Right now it seems like there are a small handful of stylists who are comfortable showing that they can trim on blowed out hair and still maintain cute curly shapes (Narada included) . I don’t understand why. Is it because they don’t want to learn? It seems like some of the curly cut stylists are maximizing $$ and said forget doing all this extra work (ie blow drying)
@harmonious.balance
@harmonious.balance Жыл бұрын
This is a topic worth discussing, Right now it seems as if BGC is in defense mode, and understandably so. However, I don’t think their response has been productive. My experience thus far with curly cuts has been satisfactory. I also wear twist outs, so I think I notice my ends a bit more. I want to see everyone succeed and I think the conversation really needs to be had amongst stylists, to ensure that every curl is touched when performing curly cuts. I think it is very easy to just clean up a shape and not thoroughly examine all of the hair. I will also say that my first experience I knew my hair wasn’t in good shape for a whole host of reasons. I always kept up with my ends even as a straight natural but my hair was cut in short layers, which doesn’t translate well for a curly shape. I’m not so much stuck on length but at that moment given all of my hair concerns, androgenic alopecia, greying, hard water…if the stylist told me that a clean slate would be a pixie, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have let her do it, because I don’t think hair that short is flattering on me. So I think there are similar scenarios where clients might be overwhelmed when the stylists assess their hair and it turns out to be in poorer condition than expected. It can be a lot to take in in that first appointment. Having said all of that I don’t think this addresses split ends; it just explains unevenness and a lack of cohesion. Split ends are at heart of this issue.
@AfrikanHairGod
@AfrikanHairGod Жыл бұрын
We've talked about the split ends on the last stream regarding this issue as well. We have really been trying to investigate why the ends have been getting tore like this... I really don't know because I'm not experienced with this approach of natural hair care... If I implemented their methods I think I could pinpoint it. I think that's what they need to do in order to ensure that this is a successful approach for all of their clients.
@harmonious.balance
@harmonious.balance Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Though Aeleise did say that it’s important that every curl has to be touched with the shears. My guess is every stylist is not doing that. Of course I’m not a stylist, but I think it’s possible that unevenness + splits probably looks even worse than hair that’s fairly cohesive with splits. So the shock factor is greater when it’s blown out if it is both uneven and split.

Also, if she wanted to create mass in the formation of the hair cut and prevent the baby crown could she have just informed her clients about cutting their hair into a nice TWA and eventually growing it out fuller as time goes on ?
