Girl the fact that some black people refer to afro hair as nappy or “undone” when it’s black hair just existing you already know that some probably did believe that. I’ve had a black person refer to afro hair when mentioned as “untamed and undone” Conversation went like this “ you can tell when stylists who want afro textured black hair to be blow dried before they come in don’t have much experience working with actual afro textured hair” Their response: “well no one wants or should have to deal with untamed and undone hair.” “Untamed” referring to afro type hair specifically. Cause the state of the hair was never even mentioned… they also refer to black hair as “that puffy hair” it’s so sick cause you’d think they werent black themselves.

Also, "hydrophobic" doesn't mean that the hair doesn't "want to be " wet. Hair doesn't have a will power. It just means that molecules of water aren't easily absorbed because of the outer layer of the hair. This is exactly why people use oils. To improve the hydrophobic properties in order to protect the cuticles and therefore the resistance to breakage when the hair is manipulated when it is wet.

So I actually saw this on TikTok last night. The lady who made this video is the owner of Wonder Curls it’s a haircare brand. As a kid growing up in Jamaica,my mom washed my hair every week put it in braids and it air dried and I had no issues. I was like I never had damage from air drying. I use a hooded dryer with twist for maybe 10 minutes just to quicken my drying process so I can go outside because it’s cold. I also use a dry paper towel or a towel to gently squeeze excess water from my hair after styling. After the last experience 😅, I just do what works for my hair. Thank you for taking the time to address this

They want us to sit under a dryer for hours. I cannot afford this. I have neither the time neither the space to install a hooded dryer. So, air drying it is. Most people won't put their kid under a dryer either, each time they need to do their hair This is completely unrealistic.

I wonder if she actually read that study or only skimmed the abstract and conclusion. Just looking at the names of the researchers, they clearly aren't studying black hair. Also, studies around that time period on "black" hair were actually Asian hairs that were processed (permed) to minic Black, naturally curly hair.

I clocked that this study was done by Asian doctors with Asian sounding names and not African doctors with African sounding names. They do not have enough experience with damaged hair with African/black ancestry! My trichologists in London is from ANGOLA. She runs clinics in Angola and the UK. We need to stop acting like we are all the same when it comes to hair. Even internally there are some medical differences and susceptibility to certain diseases. Me: did my ancestors 4000 years ago have a blow dryer?
@lavinder11
@lavinder11 6 ай бұрын
@MT-yx5cu No, because that information wasn't made public as the understanding was virgin hair of African descent was "hard to retrieve" in the US. But they figured that permed straight hair showed similar signs of fragility as natural Black hair and went with it. I used to work for Loreal R&D at that time and was shocked by the corners they cut. Then, they shut down that specific program about 6 months after I left. They were also trying to prove that air drying and flat ironing was worse than relaxers in an attempt to bring back relaxer sales, but it turned out that the researcher falsified numbers. The company didn't know, but when they found out, they didn't retract the research. I have all kinds of stories about that place and research in general, but to cover my ass, all of it ALLEGED and for entertainment purposes only.

Researcher here: reading, re-reading, and deciphering empirical studies is not for the faint of heart lol. With that stated, I have been air drying my hair for over a decade and it does nothing but flourish. I blow dry twice a year to trim. Shampooing thoroughly, and using leave in conditioner and a good butter has been the key. The biggest benefit is the food I eat and staying hydrated.

Me personally I use I use a mixture of both. If it’s in a protective style like mini twists, flat twists, natural braids or box braids then I let it air dry since my hair is already styled if not then blow dryer here I come. When I used to air dry my hair would often be tangled even when I detangled. I tried detangling in sections and it was still the same thing. My hair does better when it’s stretched out. I’m a protective style natural so I air dry more often since I have a style in for 4-8 weeks at a time. But to say air drying is more damaging than heat drying is false.

By the researchers’ names I knew this was about to be some issue. Like you said black people don’t wash their hair daily. Asians and white people with straight hair most likely do. Black people use a bunch of oils and conditioners that most others don’t. Also she’s probably excusing all this because she likes straight hair and wants to call it « healthy heat trained ».

Before my color damage, I exclusively air dried. My hair was healthy. When I experimented with the 30 day detox, I bought a hooded dryer. After going back to the regimen that was good for me, I started air drying my twist outs again. I decided to try the hooded dryer with the twists. I realized that I liked the look of my hair style more when I used the dryer and I could wash my hair and go out immediately, on the same day. I use a silicone serum, so my hair is protected. I just like the look and convenience of the hooded dryer, on low heat. However, I have no problem with air drying my hair. I will try your tip of getting all the excess water out. That may have been the problem.

@lesliewit

Yes, I've been seeing her a lot and she seems to be doing a lot to confuse people. Her perspectives on haircare are extreme and not exactly accurate. I feel like she also exploits certain hair care processes and methods that aren't actually attributed to the natural black hair care , as well as scientific information. She turned me off when she was comparing the way that naturalistas detangle with the way that people take care of their wigs. And then when she claimed that water breaks hydrogen bonds and hair, I was done. Because that is just not even factually true. Also the more you listen to someone, the more what they say makes sense to you. It's called neuro-linguistic programming. A person will repeat the same things over and over so that is what sticks in your mind rather than information that might be contradictory and yet true. It's the "incantation" part of neuro linguistic programming. She's going to get a lot of folks on her bandwagon, because whether she realizes it or not she's just repeating the same information over and over again. Politicians often do this when they are speaking to their constituents in order to strengthen the belief in their ideas. The best way to check and see if the things that Cyndoll is saying is true is lateral reading. Basically just getting the opinions of a variety of people who work in the same field and have similar levels of expertise.
@AfrikanHairGod
@AfrikanHairGod 6 ай бұрын
It doesn't make sense she's someone that knows the jargon but can't understand the concept. She talks about hydrogen bonds but she doesn't even understand what a hydrogen bond is or how it works. She talks about sulfur to sulfur linkages but isn't aware of how she contributes to the damage of disulfide bonds. She's just as bad as this woman here. She researches and finds information that helps to perpetuate her bias but in doing so creates false equivalencies and narratives to reinforce her narrative. If you don't know what you are listening to, it will sound like she's truly an expert.
@jacklyneverage3881
@jacklyneverage3881 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, she basically will turn you into either a straight natural, have you getting your hair blow dried before doing protective stretched style, or have you doing a roller set on natural hair with it being dried under a dryer. In order for her method to brush or comb hair that is not wet or damp, you literally would have to have soft and pliable hair. Because if that hair is dry and brittle, it will break. The same if the hair is wet and easily able to snap. That's why she suggests using oil to soften the hair instead of water. For me, I find that a light mist of water followed up with shea butter and oil in it gets my hair soft if I have not been regularly moisturizing my hair. If I moisturize my hair on the regular like I should, I can comb out my hair as is without applying anything and have no breakage. So, the key is having the hair in a moisturized state. Also, as far as styling hair wet, I'm still on the fence about it. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. AfrikanHairGod definitely proved you can style hair wet and no damage can occur. But, he is extra gentle and he doesn't over comb the hair in its wet state on our hair.

You just have to accept that having the curliest hair type comes with having those knots too. I’m not talking about when your whole head is covered in them, but, I’m just saying that afro type hair is prone to single strand knots unless in a stretched state (where it can STILL get them) because type 4 hair curls into itself the most.

1. Your beard looks fantastic. 2. Why is hair care getting more and more complicated according to the social media stylists? Hair has been hair forever. Why are we switching up on things that have been working for generations? All of a sudden we can't air dry our hair? By definition, blow drying is manipulation and less manipulation is better for your hair I thought? 3. I've never read that study, but I wonder if she's even read it? Like does she know the limitations of the study? Does she understand the methodology? Do any other study's cite this one and/or have other studies replicated these results? You cant skim an academic study, cherry pick the parts you agree with and then call it proof. Academic studies boil things down to what is the most important. If the article is 30 pages, that means all 30 pages are important and you cant just look at a few paragraphs in isolation. I don't comment on your channel usually, but I've been watching you since I was in high school (now I'm getting my PhD) and you're one of the only natural hair providers on this platform willing to militantly combat misinformation and I really appreciate it. I used to buy all the butters oils, treatments, deep conditioners and serums on my little minimum wage check and my hair grew about a quarter inch a month, but when my mom would give me some straight backs with a little Blue Magic, my hair grew like a weed for the month or so I would leave them in. I big chopped at least three times because I was damaging my hair with all of the build up and manipulation. My ends looked like a used broomstick lol. Going back to basics literally saved my hair. My theory is that if they don't keep complicating things, they can't find new things to upcharge their clients for. A client would complain less about having to add on $20 for a blow out of the stylist tells them that their hair will be damaged without it.

But other than this I’ve stopped styling soaking wet, when I do braided or twisted hairstyles. I’ve been back using towels or t-shirts and let these styles air dry. When I did wash&gos (which i dont anymore after a bad silk press damage), I would sit under the dryer and then diffuse for my roots, because my hair wouldnt dry. This is why you have to read studies the entire way through cuz it sounds like she didnt. What were people doing before the invention of blow dryers? We have many many records and tons of evidence of people in Africa with long healthy hair well before blow dryers were invented. And then with the advent of the European Beauty standard in Black communities, we have been beset with difficulties regarding the care of our hair. Someone who is actually interested in scientific evidence and not simply supporting their bias would have thought about and answered that question. People need to understand that science is not religious or biblical. It is not a practice that claims to give definitive answers. It is a practice that seeks to explore and understand and reveal the inner workings and processes of our world. So when you start quoting scientific text to me I turn on my scientific critical thinking skills. I don't just settle down and accept everything you've told me. Thank you for highlighting the misinformation in this video, and also being honest about the limitations in your knowledge. That is the true scientific method.

I have grown healthy hair with air drying and with heat drying (note I didn’t say heat styling not the same). My hair benefits from both. One thing my hair hates is heat styling when I actually try to blowdry my hair straight but if I am drying my hair with heat i.e.setting a wet style under heat or deep conditioning/protein treatment. My hair is moisturised with air drying and heat drying.

7:09 honestly thank you for saying this because idk if its just me but I notice whether I use direct heat or indirect heat, my hair always tends to smell burnt...if both werent negatively affecting my hair in some way, i dont think that would happen. The smell will linger for at least a few days and with direct heat, it can take a couple washdays for it to stop. I dont know whats up with that though? Is my exposure to heat too prolonged( usu 30-60min for indirect), do I need a heat protectant[for a hooded drier as well], or is the heat too high? For context, i usually only get direct heat applied by a professional for a trim.

Just like you said, everybody's hair is different. I learned my hair styles better dry due to low porosity and high density. Air drying doesn't work because it takes too long to dry, which can lead to issues with certain styles. Data is not neutral. We must think critically about how information is presented.

I recently found Cyn Doll an online KZbinr that explains the benefits of setting the bonds and it was a game changer for my hair. I will never airdry my hair again. I'm in my early 30s. Correct me if I'm wrong but I've could have sworn that our mom's, grandmama's, and great grandmama's taught us how to take care of our hair? Maybe it was just me, I don't know🤷‍♀️. All I remember is when it comes to washing your hair, you use shampoo, get your hair wet, and soapy, then scratch your scalp not too hard but enough. Wash out the shampoo, then put on conditioner for 1-2 minutes, then wash that out, scrub your body, and then dry off and wrap the towel on your head to get it dry and get it redone. I give the woman A+ for effort, but heat should never be the way to take care of your hair. But, maybe I'm wrong 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

From personal experience I can say my high porosity hair thrives more with blow drying than air drying. My hair used to be so limp and mushy but still very dry when I would air dry a twist out. Also, I used to get severe heat damage if I decided to use a flat iron to straighten once in a while. It was like my hair was just too weak for any form of manipulation including protective styles. My hair was thick at the roots and very thin towards the mid-shaft and even thinner at the ends, even when I would trim the ends. Now my hair is an even thickness down the entire shaft. It has more sheen and I’m not greying as quickly as I was before. At the end of the day if our hair growth is stagnant we should try to see what we are doing wrong for our hair. For me personally, air drying was doing more harm than good.

@92spice18

@@AfrikanHairGod I’m interested to know why you think my understanding of porosity is off. I do know my hair is high porosity. It absorbs water quickly and dries out even faster. If I blow dry on a low heat setting and finish off with a cool setting my hair feels softer and more manageable. The cool setting definitely helps to close the cuticle layer instead of it staying wide open to release more moisture if I were to air dry. I also finish my wash with a cool rinse to help keep the moisture in my very high porosity and fine hair.

What I know the lipids to be is just part of the hair cell complex. Cells have a semi-permeable bi-lipid membrane. That membrane is responsible for controlling the in and outs of lytes which controls hydration (isotonic, hypotonic, hypertonic). For hair, the lipid controls moisture. Yes the hair cell complex is dead, but the lipid layer is still present and contributes to overall hair integrity. There’s so much misinformation it’s ridiculous. One really has to know how to research and differentiate. But also, everyone’s hair is different and just looking at her hair, I wouldn’t take her advice. I think ppl should also consider the persons hair and if it too different from their own, to dismiss their advice.

Everyone has different hair, even within ethnic communities. I used to be an "air-dry" only girl for my wash and gos, and I got horrible hygral fatigue from it which took a bunch of bond-builders, protein treatments, and about six months to fully recover from. So I’m looking for clarification about a point that you made. You mentioned not to air dry for an extended period of time & although she was trying to bring it home about heat drying it still sounds like air drying is a no go. I’m assuming you put your clients under a hood dryer so that their hair can dry thoroughly. If a client wanted to leave with wet two strand twists, would you recommend it? Two strand twists still would take more than a couple hours to dry. This is news to me that allowing your hair to air dry for an extended period of time was bad news.

My clients hair is mostly dry by the time they leave the salon. If your hair isn't in a state of drying and almost being dry in a matter of 2-3 hours then it's going to damage your hair. The damage comes in the form of your elasticity waning (limp curls), frizzy hair, scalp inflammation, etc.

So I’m confused about the study and how anyone can justify using it when it’s the only one… we know that our hair is different from person to person… everyone’s hair reacts differently to different things… so how can this study be accurate when we have a range of textures that’s my first thing… my second thing is what even was the sample size for those part of this study? Or did they just use hair that was not attached to a head because that makes a difference too… also the experiment itself is not simulating to real life… so it’s not even accurate… no black person washes their hair every day… that’s so odd.. There is no one way to do natural hair what works for someone else may not work for you and that’s ok. Idk why they try to basically demonize air drying, oils, and butters… it’s so weird to me… sometimes I feel like misinformation spreads just to hurt other people and their progress to try to get them to purchase a solution… that’s just how i see it… Because if you don’t air dry that means you have to go out and purchase air dryers and whatever else… im seeing this as a back handed way for certain people and/or companies to make money… whether it’s from the products, affiliate links, sponsorships or whatever.. It’s just odd to me how often I keep seeing stuff like this happening. People prey on confusion and uncertainty…
