Good that finally someone started this conversation. Weekly hundreds of afrobeats songs are being released, none have any mention of the struggle, uniting, free Africa. Yet here is this speaker waffling about, ‘but we have some love songs”, others in comments say that Buju did not mention all the old school Africa artists that do have songs with substance. Buju’s statement clearly went over their head, we gotta do better. Because in time mainstream attention will move on to the next trend, it always does!

this show completely misses the point. i agree with what Buju said. in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, jamaican musicians and the country fought for the liberation of african countries through music (roots reggae music was banned in many countries because it united the people, especially in south africa where people had to hide and play it), through our policies (jamaica was the first country recognize south africa as an apartheid state) and as a people. we have done a lot to help shout the greatness of africa across the world, so much so, at one point, when africans who were ashamed of being african, introduced themselves as jamaicans when migrating to europe and north america. now that africa is becoming cool and accepted into western culture, they are not fighting as hard to bring awareness to whats happening in regions like the Congo or Sudan. this is what Buju is saying. all the well known afrobeats and amapiano artists are all about having a good time while their brothers and sisters are suffering bob marley, who is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential artists of all time never backed down from using this platform, his songs, and his interviews to speak about the vast injustice happening across the continent has burna boy done that? has wizkid done that? has davido done that? ...

Afrobeats collabs with those in East, North and South Africa, UK, US, Jamaica. We have had a few countries in Africa calling it to be banned and calling it a cultural invasion. A few Jamaicans even saw it as such and said not to let it replace bashment and Dancehall. They have said bees and flies do not belong together calling Reggae honey and AfroBs sh!t. If the Kings music is so everlasting why has it been overshadowed in his own land with pum pum and gun gun songs.

Lies, afrobeat is big in jamaica, buju is simply saying Africans are not using it to inspirie and unit the continent and not reaching out to jamaica like they do to Europe and USA, the fight for unity is not done because a few of us are living good

@@Jahk-mode876 Lies? I am aware Afrobeats is very popular in Jamaica, that is teh conflict with a minority of the people comes from, not everyone can be 100% for something right? So you are not aware that there are some conflicts with Afrobeats, you think I made up the Bees and Flies line? It is somewhere on social media, twitter I believe, this was backlash from a recent Reggae festival which Burna performed at, that is where the co-exist Bees and Flies line came from one individual. It is clearly the minority but some feel it replacing it, I am in the UK. There was a Jamaican lady also clipped up that if they let Afrobeats take over she is leaving the country, again I am sure it is a small minority of the 4m population. In the UK itself some said why is Afrobeats at carnival, our Jamaican brothers and sis shut it down and said allow it, its time for Africa to shine. The problem seems worse on the continent but it is really more with older artist envy from other countries. Other Africans have been consuming Nollywood and Afrobeats, so the youths talk and mimic Naija. Cameroon called for a ban on Afrobeats and said some not so nice things. Ghana has been beefing with us since it got popular and want to now ban it, they eventually called a press conference with Black Sheriff and Ghana OG musicians "Play Ghana 100%". We would not mind Ghana doing their own thing but it was the way they did it in front of the world with a direct attack, they used words like INDOCTRINATION and CULRURAL INVADERS to describe Nigerians. We know its mostly coming from their entrainment people and not the people themselves. Do you think anything I have said here is a lie? Remember not everybody can be 100% for something, human nature, agenda, conflicted feelings. I had a Ghana brother online on this very platform years ago, he is from UK like me say, he knows he should nit be feeling this way but had issue with the fact everyone seems to be adopting Naija culture, I said it he felt so strongly he should push his own culture to the world, I know he was feeling like he was being left behind and it is more with insecurity than malice.

@@Jahk-mode876 Also there is plenty of Gospel music, afrobeats, and other African genre of music in Naija and the continent that uplifts, but you need to consider today's audience, would they listen or will they jump on that which has less purity, like a Cardi?

@@Jahk-mode876 Afrobeats has already done to some extent what Buji said and united the West African family and its descendants as they can all see themselves in the music, yet some are fighting it due to its popularity, weird double edge sword. The beauty of Afrobeats is that every part of the West African family (this includes the Americas and the Caribbean) can hear themselves within it, and soon if not already the entirety of the continent. This is why everyone says it is their music from Africa and abroad and some are fighting over it.
@skyking32103 ай бұрын
@@Jahk-mode876 If there is any music that has influenced Afrobeats the most outside of Africa it will be African America music, especially with the Jazz elements. Afrobeats is a accumulation of black sounds from America, UK, Caribbean and of course West Africa. So West Africa and its decedents. Afrobeats is such a generalised thing as their is such an infinite variation of it from artist to artist just within the Nigerian sphere alone. Jazz influences it a lot as it did with Fela as well as the Talking Drum. Voodoo and Fuji music does to as these are foundations with Yoruba music.

It not about inspiring content he saying basically Afrobeats with all its attention now is not aspiring for black liberation like Fela did or its counterpart reggae. Instead has some inspiring songs but vast majority of the music works within the confines of the music industry and is simply an entertaining distraction. There are no real songs challenging power and raising awareness to current struggles in Africa that currently occurring and affect the masses. This is because the material interest of the commercial Afrobeats industry which in reality and extension of Sony music group, Warner music group and Universal music group (which are western American companies) does not align with black liberation, as they they main aim is to extract wealth from Africa through commodification of its natural products in this case music. Essentially us africans that love Afrobeats through allowing the saturation, commodification of Afrobeats we have sold out and lost vehicle to liberation which is music.

My brothers and and sisters, forget about Buju Banton, he’s purely jealous, Period! I live in the UK and here in the west including America and even Asian countries, reggae and dancehall music are in free fall, it’s afrobeat that’s taken over. Apparently dancehall has even been kicked off the billboard music awards as a genre and it’s been replaced with afrobeat, so please my brothers and sisters, keep doing your thing, we’re proud of you and thanks for making us proud to be Africans in the west. Talk of uninspiring songs, Buju should deal with the trashy lyrics in dancehall music first, most of which talk about drugs, fighting, gangs, weed, etc. Don’t be fooled by Buju being a legend, he’s Jealous, super salty!
@Jabou13 ай бұрын
I respect Buju’s opinion, but one has to also understand that Afrobeats just entered the mainstream not so long ago, and 80% of Afrobeats artists are below 30 and some of them are even under age, meaning the majority of them never live the struggles or witness the real history of Africa or the independence, and that’s why they sing about what they know, see, live, and learn about or have around them, and we can’t blame them for that either. Furthermore, not every artist is meant to sing righteous songs or revolutionary songs, and throughout history we have had artists who only sing about love songs, and their songs and names still live on to this day. Plus, Africa doesn’t need music to liberate itself anymore because the young Africans nowadays are more aware, awake, and educated than we used to be back in the 1950s and early 90s. This is a new era of a revolution, and the people don’t need music to prove that. And don’t get me wrong, I understood the message Buju is trying to narrate, but I think he kind of expresses himself wrong. As a conscious person, as he considers himself, he could’ve expressed himself in a way that even a baby could understand, but he spoils it when he involves insults, which is wrong, and also trying to compare reggae and afrobeats, like afrobeats came to compete with reggae, that was stupid. And Buju himself used to sing f’ry before turning to Rasta, and it took him time, so let’s give the youths time to develop.

This is how selfish the black man can be. It is not just Buju Banton, I have heard, and seen a whole lot of Jamaican podcasts and entertainment people talk down, try to denigrate Afrobeat. I am so disappointed in what I see and hear these days from those quaters. For decades Africa have loved Reggae Dancehall and Jamaicans, promoted it/them bcos a lot of them sang about Africa. We appreciate that a lot. We practically worshipped these guys. Unfortunately today is no longer the 60's, 70's. Todays Africa is no longer about emancipation, rebel this & rebel that, and or Revolution/Babylon stuff. We the young Africans refuse to be cast in the same garb won by our grandparents. Yes we still have lots of challenges in Africa, but make no mistake about it, todays Africa is no longer abt poverty or emancipation. There's so much more about todays Africa. Don't get it twisted. We reserve the right to have fun, make money, have a good life, promote our cultures and generally feel good. We refuse to keep lamenting. Afrobeats is the new sheriff in town. It is all about vibes, fun and cultural show off. And for some strange reason the Jamaicans are unhappy about it and they're not hiding it. That's so selfish. Recently Steele Pulse tried to rope in Burna Boy as disrespectful to them and Jamaicans. All the KZbin podcast I see coming from Jamaica, so many are talking down on Afrobeat. It is a shame. Afrobeats is here. We Africans (especially Nigerians) worked hard for it to be here. For once Africa is the center of attention for something good. Instead of being happy for us and collaborating with us, they want to talk us down to remain relevant. Unfortunately instead of rebranding and evolving, they are more interested in talking down Afrobeats. Exactly why Reggae Dancehall has faded. I see only envy and jealousy in his outburst and it doesn't look good on him. Afrobeat (including Amapiano) is a new Black sound, new genre and all black people should be proud of it including Jamaicans. No need for envy. The sky is big enough for all to thrive.

Apart from Fela and a very few others, Afrobeats does not inspire the Africa liberation struggle themes, but Reggae does. Buju is right. This debate does not seem serious enough to tackle what Buju said. The arguments and mocking attitude in the studio are disappointingly weak. Africa right now is at a turning point in its identity, prosperity, future and security crisis. Arts we produce and debate must reflect and inspire our consciousness.
