Airdate: September 28, 1963
This clip comes from an episode courtesy of @jthyme. Thank you Gary!
The Jaynetts’ (somewhat mysterious) one hit peaks at #2 today on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Regulars dancing today are Bruce Richard, Pat Carpino & Sandi Bartholomew, Gary Stapleford, Michelle Liebowitz, Mike Barone & Ailyene Silverman, Richie Cartledge & Geri Iannetti, Steve Lewis & Lorraine Iannetti, Barbara Warchol and Sandra Short.
I love how the Top 10 board is still handwritten even in these later Philly episodes. Can you spot all of the misspellings?
In American Bandstand History - According to Dick Clark, either last week or maybe in the next week or two, “She Loves You” by The Beatles will be played on Record Review (sorry, it was not in this episode) receiving a so-so score of 73. The Philadelphia based "Swan Records" had just released the single on Sept. 16th after it hit #1 in the U.K. back in late August. After the record was played on the show, Dick held up a picture of the band and “When the kids saw a photo of the four long-haired lads, they just laughed.”
Thank you for watching!

I was 13 when Sally Go Round the Roses hit the charts and it BLEW ME AWAY. It has no equal and should have its own genre. But nothing will ever be cool enough to be it its genre so in has to be its own ,which is awesome.

"Sally Go Round The Roses" was MILES ahead of its time. Haunting beauty and reverb vocals. You might call it the first Psychecedelic Song. Grace Slick's "Great Society" recorded a cool version before she moved onto "Jefferson Airplane". For my money, the Jaynetts' version was the definitive recording. It was 3 years before American Rock caught up to this Spooky offering.

Love Grace Slick's cover. Also Tim Buckley and Donna Summer have really amazing covers of the song. A few notable, but more faithful, covers include Fanny, Pentangle, and a must be seen to be believed cover by ? and the Mysterians.

Hi Don! That’s really cool. Did you buy it when it first came out in ‘63 or find it later. You’d have to have been a bit ahead-of-your-time to be an American Beatles fan in September of 1963. It’s still hard for me to understand how they failed so badly in the US in ‘63 and then were so off-the-charts popular in ‘64 with many of the exact same songs. Check out Song Facts,"The melody was an adaptation of an old English nursery rhyme." hmmmmm Yes there are a number of theories. I think lesbianism is the least likely, but hey. At the very least, the pain of abandonment...

@@CatrionaRuadh The birth control pill was about a year away as I remember. I had a girlfriend at that time and she absolutely refused sex for fear of becoming pregnant. Her parents would have hit the ceiling if she came home pregnant. My father would have killed me. In any event the song is haunting and mysterious in melody and lyrics. I had the single when I was a kid. It was on a yellow label called Tuff Records. The B side was an instrumental of the same song. Loved it, but had no idea what it was about. I read a strange analysis of it somewhere that suggested it was actually a song about a woman spurning her man to be around lesbians, LOL! I am skeptical of that but it was an interesting take on the song. Gotta love mysterious tracks like this!

It appears that some of the dancers were engaged in VERY important conversations. And then there is the brother and sister couple with the sister getting bumped till she is black and blue. It also appears there is a competition to get in front of the camera ... My favorite is the neatly coifed couple who looked like they practiced their moves in the Living Room recently.

Abner Spector, A&R dude for Chess Records, produced. Written by his wife Lona Stevens & Zelma "Zell" Sanders, owner of J&S Records. Sanders formed Jaynetts. Arranged by Artie Butler, who prepped backing track at Broadway Recording Studios in the Ed Sullivan Theater. Butler played all parts except Al Gorgoni on guitar & Carl Lynch on bass. Recorded "on an old Ampex tape machine at 71⁄2 IPS mono. Each time when I added another element" - including the final element: the vocalists - "I added a different type of reverb. Each generation seemed to add to the distinct sound of the record." Besides the 5 vocalists credited in the group Sanders assembled to record the song, Yvonne Bushnell, Ethel Davis (aka Vernell Hill), Ada Ray Kelly, Johnnie Louise Richardson and Mary Sue Wells, at least 5 other vocalists are featured: Selena Healey, Marie Hood, Marlene Jenkins (aka Marlina Mack/Marlina Mars), Louise Harris Murray, Lezli Valentine and Iggy Williams. The sessions took over a week, costing $60K, which was then an exorbitant amount of time & money for a single track. According to Johnnie Louise Richardson, "Anybody that came in the studio that week, [Spector] would put them on [the track]. Originally, I think he had about 20 voices on 'Sally.'" Butler's recollection is that Spector only heard the "Sally Go 'Round the Roses" track when it was completed and "hated it. He was really angry. He felt that I wasted his money." Butler played the track for Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who offered to buy it from Spector: the interest of the duo caused Spector to reassess "Sally...", which he had Sanders release as a single credited to 'the Jaynetts', with the instrumental track as the B-side. Butler claimed his only return for arranging "Sally..." was being credited as the arranger on the record: a 1971 Billboard article states that Butler's arrangement of "Sally..." did earn him $3. Recording engineer was John P. "Jack" Sullivan. "Sally Go 'Round the Roses" had its first major market breakout in San Francisco, its ringing arrangement being a precursor of the San Francisco Sound. The song was a favorite number of Grace Slick when she fronted the Great Society, her pre-Jefferson Airplane outfit, and it was a formative influence on New York's Laura Nyro. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 28, 1963. #7 in France, #2 in NZ. On the Jaynetts' LP, there is a sister song to "SALLY" called "Peepin' In and Out the Windows". Basically they are the same song with different lyrics.

I love the beat of the song & think it deserves more of a faster partners farther type of dancing. The feel of the song seems to be more edgy 1966 than 63. But just a viewers opinion. Catherine: When a show is put together, a decision has to be made by the producer as to how the dancers look on camera on the small set. The video cameras of that era could not easily zoom in and out and stay in focus. Also, if they spotlight two dancers, what about the others? Nobody was paid. They came to be on camera. Also, unless they took lessons, their swing dance was limited. Even an overhand turn could result in someone getting hit. Still, when I watched as a 15 year old, I was amazed at the affectionate cuddly fun these couples were having. It was Chubby Checker that broke up couple dancing with his Twist. The only way back to this kind of dancing is Tango or Salsa dancing.

It's a haunting song because it's about the 14th century, the Black Death. The roses are the bobals (roses) of the bubonic plague. Sixty years ago, when I first heard this song, I didn't know what it was about, but it haunted me as if it wanted to jump into my nightmares. Now I know why. You have to work at it. I have learned the names of and to recognize 19 of the regulars who danced in 1963. I read articles in 16 Magazine posted on KZbin that showed their pictures with their names. I watched the 30 year anniversary reunion KZbin videos where the regulars said their names. I saw some pictures with names on Facebook...the Philadelphia Years. There are still some regulars who I can't name, but would sure like to know who they are. Also, I have been able to find out who are a few of the ones who have died. For example, at 2:11is Bruce Richard, the tall guy. He died of AIDS in 1987 at the age of 41. I saw a list of names of the deceased on Facebook a while back but now I can't find it again. I am 77 which is the average age of the kids in this video. I'm an invalid and learning about the Philadelphia regulars has become my hobby.

"Hey Lonely One" was Baby's only 1963 single that didn't fair well on the charts. Which was a pity because it had a great, heavy, uptempo beat.

The set of Bandstand in those days looked pretty cramped. Not much room to dance. The WFIL studio at 46th and Market was comparatively smaller than the one they were building in Bala Cynwyd at that time. Interesting that Dick Clark kept the same set arrangement for the first two years in LA. American Bandstand took on a California look in 1966.
