Afroman on Being Eight Tray Crip, Moving to Rival Rolling 60's School

While he's known more for his stoner songs, Afroman's first album, My Fro-losophy, featured lots of references to the Crips, which he belonged to while living in South Central as a kid. Afroman spoke on how he joined the Eight Tray Gangsters in his neighborhood to get respect, but it was when he moved to a rival Rolling 60's school that he got into a bit of trouble.
To hear more of what Afroman encountered during his gang life, and how his dad moved his family out of the neighborhood, hit the above clip.

Wow his Dad was a real one. He actually listened to his child before he came home bloody, bruised, and broken, and went as far as to move houses so his child didnt have to go to that school. Not all Dads would do that. He was also lucky enough his parents handled their life properly and had the money to be able to move to a new home just like that. It's crazy how much decisions like that can change the course of history. If his dad didn't listen to him and didnt care enough to fix that problem, Afroman may never have existed. Who knows how many people have been seriously affected by his music over the years; the world where Lil' Afroman gets jumped and killed on his way home from school may be completely different than the one we live in today. I knew he was talking about Debo literally as soon as the first word mentioning him came out his mouth, "Who wa-" DEBOOOO XD

100% true. One of my fondest memories is my two brothers and I walking around our town at 2:30 in the morning, I had never heard of Fro, I was all of maybe 8 or 9 years old. All of a sudden, one brother says "Aye check this out man, so there was this blind man right?" The other brother laughs and starts doing the background voices and they both at the top of their lungs recited Colt 45 for all of the world to hear. That was my introduction to Afroman and I am truly grateful for his music ✊️

Man, keep in mind just how many old heads of the day just weren't as perceptive to these things? Many dads would've been like, "you gotta just go out there and stand up to these bullies like a man, and they'll stop messing with you" and all that. Not realizing the reality on the ground. So yeah, shoutout to his pops for that.

Afroman speaking the truth. By the age of eleven, most kids are already influenced by what they see in the hood. I remember growing up seeing 18th Street graffiti all over my neighborhood. And if it wasn't for my mom moving us out of the hood, who knows how different my life would have turned out.

Born and Raised in OG LA 46 years and I can relate to a lot of what he says, I grew up Mid City Los Angeles around 18st, MS, Mid City Stoners, and beyond and being a white boy in these areas was something that made me hard boiled and I wouldn't change a thing. I busted up when he said everyone from LA has a Deebo Story and he is absolutely right! LA was no joke back in the day, especially for all the people that got caught up in the American Crack epidemic. All my friends are either dead or incarcerated, I was the only one that made it out, but with a lot of battle scars. Mad respect for AFROMAN.

I had this exact experience around 12. I was bused to a school three neighborhoods away and spent my first day of seventh grade fighting-didn’t start shit, just got bombed on from 7:45am to the last bell. Came home and flat out told my folks I’m not going there anymore. They understood immediately I wasn’t bullshitting. Thank god I had understanding parents. 🙏
