Afsluitdijk:
The 32 kilometre long Afsluitdijk, built between 1927 and 1933, is an important part of the Zuiderzee Works and connects the provinces of Friesland and North Holland. It changed the saltwater Zuiderzee into the freshwater IJsselmeer. The Zuiderzee Works consisted of two parts. In the first stage, the Zuiderzee was dammed, turning it into a freshwater lake. The second part of the plan was the reclamation of new land. This meant that, after the Zuiderzee had been closed off, the entire new province of Flevoland was reclaimed from the waters.

The Afsluitdijk is under construction nowadays, it is made higher to protect the lower part of The Netherlands against the higer waterlevel that is expected the coming years because of the climate change. That implies that all the other construction parts like the floodgates, the walls and the road itself all have to be adapted as well. All the work will be finished around 2025. Notice the sign to Zurich, don't think of Switzerland, but it is a small village near the Afsluitdijk in Friesland. Makkum is wellknown for its painted pottery, and it has yachtbuilders. The large building you see at the left when entering the town is such a yachtbuilder.

3:47 : To the left is the main gate to Nieuwe Haven, the main naval base of the Netherlands. My home from 2001 until 2006 and partly 2007. Not much have changed in Den Helder since then. And how many times I've crossed the Afsluitdijk, is anyone's guess. Nice throwback!

One of the most famous seaside drive in The Netherlands, the A7 motorway is definetely a great drive. N57 from Rotterdam to Middelburg is also a beautiful one, maybe you can try this one too, did it last year. Thanks a lot for the video, greetings from a fellow roadtripper and creator from Germany!
