Love this review, Eve! :D There’s something about the older Seiko 5s that just look so much more elegant. It’s contemporary and will remain a safe option to use for many years to come (it’s getting harder to sport the bigger models lol). The old seiko 5s are the best affordable ones out there. I got myself a seiko snkk17j1 for less than 2,000 php. With its black dial with gold markers and classy 37mm diameter, it looks fantastic on my wrist . The only compromise is that I gain almost a minute per day. It is not a serious issue tho, I ordered the watch backcase opener to adjust the regulator pins. Great content as always, thanks for sharing :)

Hi @@AliasEveWatches ! Yay! Now my watch has arrived and it is just like you described and I really liked it. Here are my two cents from my first insights: 1 - the combination of polished and brushed on the case is very nice. I could stay "for hours" just admiring my new watch. :-D 2 - I believe that watches between 37mm and 40mm also looks nice on my 6.5 inch wrist, however, it can be a little strange at first if we are used to wearing 42mm watches or larger. 3 - Depending on the size of your fingers or your dexterity, it can be a little hard to adjust your watch due to the small size of the crown. Be patient. 4 - In addition to the jingly jangly, the folded link bracelet can also catch some hairs on your wrist. Be careful. :-/ :-D I haven't tried other straps yet and I will keep the watch with the original bracelet. On the other hand, I think that I will not resist (sorry) and I will copy (maybe do a homage) using some of your ideas/combinations of leather straps and NATO for this watch. ;-)

I love the look of this watch. It's right up my alley for a sporty/dressy watch. The only thing that's stopped me from getting one is the WR. I'm not so absent minded not to keep it away from water (that's what I like to tell myself anyways), but I live in a high dust environment. Every 30m watch I've worn on a semi-regular basis has after only two or three years had to be professionally disassembled and cleaned for big money. This is why I now only buy 50m (marginally better) if not 100m+ anymore. Otherwise, I'd snatch this one up in a heartbeat. Thanks for the 2 year review, Eve!
@AliasEveWatches
@AliasEveWatches 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching! I'm curious, where do you live that has a high-dust environment? I should take note of high-dust as a potential issue for my 30m WR watches. For 100m, I recommend the Seiko 5 Sports SBSA (041, 053) models. They've got the classic Seiko 5 cases and dressy/sporty look but with 100m water resistance! Unfortunately, they're above $200.

@@AliasEveWatches I live rural on the American High Plains right smack in the middle of farm and ranch country well outside of any city or town. All of the roads are dirt with farm equipment going up and down them. We don't get much rain, only about 20 inches (50cm) annual, and it's fairly windy so there is a lot of very fine dust. I've had to replace the air intake system in my truck from the stock factory that takes a $25 filter to one that was designed just for this kind of environment, but it takes a $65 filter. So unless you live and work somewhere extreme like that, I wouldn't worry too much. Where you live I'd be more concerned with humidity and corrosion than dust contamination. If you do find yourself in that kind of environment, limited exposure is fine. Just make sure the case back is secure and avoid fiddling with the crown. If you move to a high dust area, I'd store them in a box with a rubber seal. What I've done with my seldom worn watches (and other stuff like electronics, optics, etc.) is wrap them in butcher paper and vacuum seal them, but I've had folks recently tell me that's not a good idea. I haven't had any issues yet except for one rifle scope, but it was old and cheap. You be the judge. I'd forgotten about those SBSAs. I have to say that I'm a bit more partial to the SNLK dial plus I've got a lot of projects right now that are bleeding my bank account, but I'll definitely keep those in mind. Thanks!

Hey Eve. I got an SNKM45 myself (the brown sunburst dial version) and I love it. I would have to agree that the older Seiko 5s are probably the most practical choice for an everyday automatic watch from a well known brand in the sub 100 or sub 150$ range (depending on the model), winning out over Vostoks not necessarily in the technical department (although the 7s26 seems to be a bit more consistent than a 2416 or so), but in the general purpose subdued look. However, the bracelets are indeed horrid. When I got mine, I didn't really care about mangling the end links as I knew I was putting the bracelet straight in the bin lol. Ended up putting my SNKM on a Geckota rivet Berwick bracelet which is absolutely gorgeous, but has the downside of being almost as expensive as the watch :)

It's a nice watch indeed, and it was back in the day seiko was still affordable, I'm not to bother about hacking if it can be back hacked, quick change is nice but I would not say no to a watch I like if its not quick change, handwinding I really think is quite important for accuracy and amplitude, I find you can keep a watch very accurate is you wind it everyday about half from empty to full so about 30 half turns. Doing the seiko shuffle to wind it up makes the balance go quicker. For example on most watches if you want to speed them up buy a few second you can just shuffle it back and forth for a while and it should add a few seconds. I never realised how important handwinding was until covid hit and your not that active and not giving the watch enough euto movement. It really would not cost much more for seiko to make this watch with sapphire, hacking and handwinding but seiko has really moved a lot more up market. It's getting to the point that the only new Japanese watch brands that have value for money are orient and I really hope they don't pull a upmarket trick.

@@AliasEveWatches During lockdown I messed up the time quite a few times due to this, I find oreints being the best to find with the lowest inactivity, I rember you could buy a pilots style S5 for under 60 in 18/19. In the UK the new seiko 5s are going for 150 to 200 pounds plus. I honestly don't see myself ever buying a new seiko in the future unless it's something really special. Apart from used/vintage I feel Chinese brands have really upped their game but they often have stupid names and logos. It's not exactly a secret that nearly all low and mid range Japanese and Swiss watches have everything apart from the movement made in China.

Those SD1970s are the best watches on the Internet for the money, during the exli express sale I managed to buy 10 of the no logo black dial ones with steel straps for 53 pounds each. I plan on getting some custom dials made that look more like the 60s/70s Vietnam era watches. Ironically my father had a late 1950s rolex GMT but someone stole it when he was in hospital and later died, if not for that I would now have the appocolypse now watch collection. With uncertain ecenonic times if you know you can buy a watch that sells in your nation for a good price and you find a seller that has a good deal it's a pretty good investment. I'm got 24 amphibias when the rouble was low and 10 SD1970s, I will sit on them for 6 months so the price will rise. When the rouble was low the ambibias worked out less than 25 pounds per watch delivered. I am kicking myself in the teeth for not moving my savings from GBP to USD a few months ago.

If someone asked me what watch should I get for my first that is not expensive I would say the SD1970 all day long, the vostok are good for the price but I'm pretty sure you can't import them anymore and they are more of an aqquired tasted due to how old fashioned they are, I know the factory has no ties with the Russian government but if the factory ever shuts down they will triple or more in value overnight.

@@kokolexx Welcome to the dark side😈...... (and by that, I mean literally dark side because of the black dial)

@@AliasEveWatches I love it but I have a problem now. Can't stop looking at it😭. The only downside is that it is a bit smaller than I thought,but my wrist is small so it's fine. Guess next time I buy a watch I will find a 40mm one. But not anytime soon since I don't want to go down this rabbit hole of watch collecting because I'm already deep inside the fountain pens rabbit hole and my wallet won't survive another one🤣

@@kokolexx Hahahahha! If you have a small wrist but want something a bit bigger, the black SARB033 or 035 is a good candidate. However, they're hard to find now. Plus, enjoy your SNKL45 first!

I want this watch so bad but I can’t buy it at retail and resellers are asking mad prices for these.

I think it's about $100 on Amazon US right now! How much are they charging you there? Luckily I got mine at $80ish.

That's true! I've seen some decent stainless steel bracelets on our local e-commerce websites and Aliexpress for less than $10! I got this SNKL45 for $80 so upgrading the bracelet would still add up to less than $100. 😀

This or the Seiko SNK361?

If you like the 5's monogrammed in the background, the SNK361 is a good option. Personally, I don't like it. I prefer the simple sunburst dial. 😁

@@AliasEveWatches I mean I think the Seiko SNSX79 have a case also for the best starter $100 watch, although both SNLK45 and SNXS79 watches have already increased the price. :)

@@rexsee7071 The SNXS79 has a great dial, I think! But the turtle-like case shape, I'm not a huge fan. 😅 But I've seen a video on youtube (I think it's Time Squared) where he transferred the dial of an SNXS to an SNKL case which looked really nice!

Snkl45 or snxs79?🤔

While I like the dial of the SNXS79, since it resembles the Rolex OP, I'm not a fan of the case. I did see a mod where they put the dial of the SNXS into the SNKL case, which looks cool but I don't want to have to mod it. 😁

I have both ,they are both great everyday watches but I do lean towards the SNXS79 due to the dial looking cleaner in my opinion.

"Starter watch" is a weird term. You don't have to learn how to watch. If you can strap in on, you're good to go.
