I'm glad I had the North America release. I used to que "Youth Gone Wild" by Skid Row in my CD player, hit pause, and fly around until I got contact with an enemy. Then I'd hit play and shoot them down, if I could... I was still playing this in 1991. 😂

I owned the sit down version (without a pod enclosure). I sold it on eBay and when the guys came round to collect it, one of the hydraulics failed. So I sold it to them for £100 (back in 2004). How times have changed ! I wish I had kept it ! 😪

Wow I bet that was hard to part with even though it was broken. I was playing the stand up arcade cabinet at the Arcade Club in Bury and it was just pure nostalgia overload. Still such a great coin-op game isn't it 😇🕹👌

@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Not really (to get rid of it - at the time) . Back in 2003/4 no one really cared about these machines, nor fixed them up. They were a pain to keep going and I got stressed over them a lot - having the first and only panic attack in my life ffs ! When I got my V12 6.0 L Daimler, I put my energies into that money pit. Now again, I collect 8 and 16 bit micros and consoles and have 6 arcade machines. Whilst looking for one, I saw the same model of Afterburner II as mine, but it was £3500 ! I miss it a lot now, I really do, knackered or not 😔

Gutted pal. It sucks but at least you stick with the micros. To be fair, you'll get more enjoyment. I had a fruit machine for months in my front room and although it was a novelty... it soon wore off. Money comes and goes eh, probably would have been worth a bit now, but ahhhh feck it 😇🕹️👌

I experienced this kind of gameplay playing "Hellfire", and later I also found out about "Final Strike". Both seemed to be better than Afterburner.
@CheekyCommodoreGamer
@CheekyCommodoreGamer Жыл бұрын
I remember Hellfire... I think it was called Hellfire Attack here in the UK, was that the one with the helicopters? Am sure I had that on the Commodore 64 too... not heard of the other one though. I do really enjoy playing flight sims though and on the modern systems I'm regularly knocking myself sick playing Ace Combat on the VR Headset! 😆🕹👌

@@CheekyCommodoreGamer , my bad, it's "First Strike"! It supposed to be the best of all in that subgenre, at least on C64!

Oh no, This was horrendous on the Amiga version. But good version on the C64(USA). I play the arcade version online and amazed how I can play it at home, back then I thought it was impossible!

Why there were two versions in the first place? Surely one territory could have licences the other, and applied the relevant 50/60hz timing adjustments…

Well the US Version looks lika a Port from the Master System After Burner. I never played it on C64 until a few weeks back, just to have played it. I didn't miss anything 35 years ago 🙂 German reviews totally buried the C64 Version. So I sticked with the Master System Release, until I got the Mega Drive After Burner 2 a few years ago. I recommend checking them out. Nowhere near the Arcade, but both are much better than the home Computer ports

I think I either had the Mega Drive version or I borrowed it from a friend... I do remember G-Loc though and I absolutely loved that. Yeah the C64 version was a little disappointing, but the US version still had me hooked for a while 😇🕹️👌

I only had the European version, and 'meh' as it may be, I was so hooked on the large cabinet arcade original and the Top Gun movie that I played it to death anyway. At least the music was ace! 12% score for sound? Zzap!, what were you smoking?

Lego Afterburner indeed. Very blocky UK version or slower USA version. Neither seemed to capture the feel of the arcade version. Not untill the PSP Afterburner release did it have the graphics and the speed. Plus the neat touches of the Outrun Ferrari and Super Hang On bike, making guest appearances of you did well in the stages.

I think that the majority of the Sega ports to the 8-bit market were pretty poor in general weren't they, which was a massive shame to me as a kid. Bringing home the huge cassette box filled with excitement, only to be deeply disappointed upon loading the game. Still, they did well considering the limitations, looking at it retrospectively 😇🕹👌

@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Oh yes. Thunder blade was not to bad. Rtype was OK, apart from all the rewinding and tape playing. But without a doubt, Double Dragon has to be the biggest let down. Colours, sound, the characters cut in half. Saved money wasted.

There seems to be much hate about the European version. Only 2.75 on Lemon64. It is by no means a great game but I don't think it's that bad. I love the music and it's kind of fun for 15 minutes or so. IMHO there are far worse games with better score on Lemon64. Never really played the US version. I will check it out again over the weekend :)

I definitely preferred the US version but only had the UK one back when I was a kid... its not all that bad of a gane but neither really held my attention for a great deal. Maybe hence the low scores, but you might like it if you give it a try 😇🕹👌

I played the UK version out of curiosity back then, never thought they dared to port this. It looked like they stole the Space Harrier engine and toned it down. Result was messy and disappointing. Just tried the US version and indeed way better graphically and excellent music but controls are garbage and no barrel rolls ?
@CheekyCommodoreGamer
@CheekyCommodoreGamer Жыл бұрын
The barrel roles were the best features in the arcades for sure. Ahhh Space Harrier. One of my guilty pleasures in the arcades. Must add that to the C64 games list 😇🕹👌

It definitely had the same effect on me, just wasn't addictive enough to hold my attention long enough as was a huge disappointment when I first loaded it up, such a shame as the coin-op is awesome. I seem to remember still putting the poster on my wall though, as a kid 😇🕹️👌

Another poor attempt at the amazing sega game. Music wasn't bad but the graphics very messy,black boxes around everything. Think it had poor multi load too on tape Played the us version much later and way better Disappointed back in the day.

I agree with you, the US version was much better and again by admitting my disappointment as a kid. Love the arcade version, especially on the moving Sega arcades like the one in the video 😇🕹👌
