You can parent the flare direct to the null object, not alt click on flare center!, then manual center the flare to the start position, zoom in abit, make sure the start position of the timeline is also at 0. Works perfect!

While this was an awesome video I did have some trouble re-creating it. Specifically when it came to moving the mask to get the other flares to appear. Ultimately I had to create each individual layer separate (Step one). I could not use the duplicate function. (probably user error). Other than that this video was super helpful. Thanks! 3:05 = command or ctrl + c on the path mask and command/ctrl + v on the position of the null object (not as a new mask for the null object) Hope this is helpful for future viewers :o)

If some of you are getting to 7:50 ish where your flare is offset from the letter.. That could be because you moved your mask layer, which for some reason offsets the center position of the flare. Just a FYI

You might have already solved this but I managed it by creating a new adjustment layer rather than a new solid layer when creating the flare.

I know I'm late for these questions but letters like these will contain two masks. Just make a flare for each segment. Josh has made a short video like this that works without using a null object. Copy the layers path and paste it to the Lens Flare Center. If you use easy ease (F9) on the last keyframe you must use easy ease on the last keyframe of your stroke or they will be offset.

Under your outline masks, you should see two masks for each of the letters that have both an outer and an inner portion of the outline. You can apply the process he goes over to one, the other, or both.

when I copy the mask path of the first letter and paste it to the null object the path of the red outlined letter is smaller than the actual letter. So for this I'm just using the word "TEST".
