After Effects Tutorial: Retro Infinite Tunnel Loop

Create a endless loop in After Effects using shape layers. We will design a tunnel with a retro feel that might be used in lyric videos and abstract projects. With this tutorial you will be able to create an infinite loop with shape layers and repeaters extremely fast. The good news about using the methods in this tutorial is that the time it takes to update a shape is close to none. If you change the design of one shape, all of these other shapes in the loop update.

This was a REALLY great tutorial. Very impressed that no plug-ins were required and it's quick building process using the repeater. Thank you for sharing. As a word of advice though, in regards to your speaking pace, you speak very quickly and use quite a bit of filler words. There's nothing wrong with the way you speak, it can just be hard to stay attentive b/c of uncertainty of important words. I'd recommend practicing public speaking, because it'll help you slow down and self-analyze on the use of filler words, like, "and", "like", etc. It helped me quite a bit in my community college days. Thanks again for this tutorial! :)

Love the tutorial. Is there any reason why I shouldn't just keyframe the position of a camera object, as opposed to the positions of all the shape layers? I can recreate the same effect, and doing so also allowed me to play with the rotation a bit to make it even more trippy.

Its been like 4 years and nobody replied. I'm assuming you figured out how to replicate the custom image so I'm answering this for the people who are/will struggle finding the solution. So first go to the effects and presets and search "repetile". Drag and drop it to the image you want to repeat. In effect control, there are many option, to replicate the image on the right side specifically, increase the "expand right" value. Increase it as much as you want. You'll see your image getting replicated depending on the value you've inserted. Now to make your images move from right to left in 3d, make a camera layer, transform, then change the z-axis value of "point of interest" to a high value. It will help you in future, now animate "position" and again change the z-axis value. Now remember, you can only increase the value of z-axis of "position" equals to the value you've inserted in the z-axis of "point of interest". You can try exceeding the value and see how weird things get. Things should probably look same as in This video. Hope it helps!

Yeah, this wasn't an infinite loop at all. You need to make sure your start and end keyframe look identical in terms of the relative asset position (most likely add the value of your repeater offset to you z keyframe) then to make a perfect loop, add a keyframe 1 frame back from your last keyframe then delete the last keyframe. Then add an expression to your position keyframe (alt click the stopwatch) and write "loopOut()" and you're done

Thats a good point- Id say put a camera in there and set points where the camera goes so far down the tunnel then basically warps back to the start. that way you can add change in focal length etc and change things over time. But yeah a precomped looped footage would work great.

loopOut() expression would be my suggestion. You could link the second zdepth keyframe to add whatever the repeater offset value is (might need a random controller/null to generate the value). Then you can adjust anything you want and it'll always loop for eternity.

I made all the pictures and grouped them, then i started whith the position of the group as well as the repetitions and the position, then i doubled the shape layer and each one was giving the orientation and position.
