After Hurricane Ian and A Summer Away, Will We Want To Come Back? (EP 57 Monday Never)

Our new season starts ... now! We had left our boat in St. Augustine for the summer, and for Hurricane Ian. After all that time away, what will it be like to come back to our boat? Will she be in one piece? Will we be happy to get back? How will our daughter react after so much time away?
In this episode we bring you along for our first days back on the boat and the start to our refit period. Our first project is to rebuild our auto-prop. Spoiler alert, it does not go well.

You need skf speedi sleeves to correct wear from the seals putting the surfaces back to new and are S/S Personally I would ditch the auto prop and buy a Kiwi best bang for the buck and nothing to wear out ,had one on my boat since 2008

SV Nandji had a similar problem with their AutoProp. Fixed it once on the hard, shortly after launch and hundreds of miles from anywhere in the Singapore strait it crapped out again. Yosh had to remove the broken prop and reinstall the original fixed prop while at anchor in a remote anchorage. I don't think he ever put the AutoProp back on. It's an awful lot of work for 2 +/- knots.

Everybody I know that's had those Auto-prop props has had an issue with the tolerances...they always seem to loosen up.

Looks like you had a great break. Did you go to Polperro in Cornwall? The Blue Peter pub is my favourite in the UK. I love that area including Mevagissey and "Foy".

@@Mondaynever Nice! We are going to visit friends in south FL who got hammered by Ian so not sure if we'll make it to the Bahamas this time. Never know, we still have a valid cruising permit which may be all the excuse we need.

@@Mondaynever Thanks for the prompt reply. Our boat is currently in Emerald Bay (Great Exuma) while we take a cruising break to fly home for the holidays. When we get back to the boat we plan on spending a brief time hanging about Georgetown before headed down to The Raggeds. I believe you guys draw about the same amount as us (6.5’). Which route do you recommend? I’ve been looking at both Explorer and Navionics charts trying to plot a route. I know you were there last season and believe you are headed there now….? TIA! @@kevinschmit1710 we draw 6 and have always (and only) gone through the Cormer Channel. So we head to Thomson Bay in Long Island first and then down through Cormer Channel at high tide. That way I don’t think we’ve seen less than 8 feet.

Just get the correct size fixed prop (if that's not it already). That autoprop is far too complex and will always give you trouble. There are other designs (like a maxprop) which are more reliable, but this is not one of them. For a cruising boat like this, the extra drag of a fixed prop is not important.
