The biggest aspect of Merchant’s power in their collaboration was surely his ability to stop making stuff too sentimental. The office had just the right amount of sweetness in it. Merchant seems to have been able to identify a little bit of sugar in the recipe lifts the whole thing, but just the right amount - Ricky dumps the whole bag of sugar in the pot. It’s unbearable and just feels horribly manipulative and becomes cringe. Thank God merchant was there to keep the early stuff together. Ricky these days would have had Tim crying over a photo of Dawn with Coldplay in the background. Every episode.

I honestly think Gervais, when it comes to TV and stand-up, is a chancer. I think he is a guy who is funny enough as a person but has no talent. he has spent his career piggy backing funny people to get on. Now he is big enough to not need them, we can see how lazy and crap he really is. After Life and low hanging trans jokes. Oh, and that stench of self-importance when discussing atheism and other topics. Fucking insufferable. However, the thing I hate the most about the show is the mischaracterization of mental illness. I don't think Gervais has been depressed one single solitary fucking day in his life. "I can be a dick to everyone because I always have suicide to fall back on" would be funny if Gervais didn't take the show and himself so seriously, but he does so to a dangerously egotistical degree. I think Gervais needs a co-writer to be able to write a better show. Even in other series he's wrote its just so black and white. The music he picks literally has lyrics to what is being shown on the screen, and theres always some lesser character for his character to bully. Wether its Kev or Pilkingtons character from Derek, Lenny from Afterlife etc. But for some reason everyone thinks he's a genius.

I used to be an absolute die-hard Gervais fan, but as time has gone on you can tell more and more that Merchant was the brains behind it all. Just look at the stuff they have done since parting ways. Derek and After Life are absolute shite. Merchant directed a brilliant film in Fighting with my Family and his new drama the Outlaws is great too. I sort of think Gervais has become what he was satirising in Extras. There's an episode when he goes to the pub to get attention from (what is displayed as) common people because his peers hated his lowest common denominator comedy. After Life is a bit like that, and you see him lapping up all the compliments on Twitter while it gets panned by critics for having the emotional depth of a pancake. His wife seemed to spend her entire last week on this earth making videos telling him how wonderful he is - even though from the only evidence we have, he was insufferable. 3. Something that comes across from the opening scene is a general feeling of amateurishness; the sets, the lighting,, the way it's shot, etc. all feel really fake. There's a bunch of implausible incidental characters written to be stupid and obnoxious and make Tony seem clever and likeable by comparison. The contrived, clunky feeling of the script from a seasoned TV writer is shocking. The other really off-putting thing is how much it feels like a window into a very personal fantasy of Gervais's. Tony's grief is a superpower that allows him to see things for how they really are and speak uncomfortable existential truths that the average pleb can't handle. It mirrors uncannily Gervais's habit of saying something offensive about some oft-ridiculed group, and then pivoting to some bleak, existential truth bomb whenever he cops any flak. 'Who cares if I say "mong" when there's no God and we evolved from apes in a meaningless universe?' Gervais really seems to get off on the idea that he's in a special minority who have assimilated these bleak existential truths and that the psychological burden he carries justifies or redeems being a prick to people. Also *hate* the weird mawkish attitude he has towards care workers, nurses and old people. It's like their closeness to sickness and death exempts them from Gervais's mockery and judgement. It's a strangely puritanical outlook from such an outspoken atheist.

''Who cares if I say "mong" when there's no God and we evolved from apes in a meaningless universe?'' Where are you quoting/paraphrasing this from? As someone who is a fan of RG and has watched probably hours of his defences against criticism, I have never heard him say anything that even comes close to this logic. Where are you getting that from? Particularly the 'meaningless universe' bit, that seems completely at odds with how he sees the world. Which is far more along the lines of: in spite of living in a world with so many bleak existential truths, we derive meaning from our interaction with others, particularly through kindness. Also at no point is it implied that Tony's grief allows him to see things for what they really are. Tony's grief allows him to say what he pleases, it allows him to say things that people often think, but are too afraid to say. That does not imply they are correct. In fact, the finale of the show completely undermines your point, in that he transforms his outlook on the world to be more in line with what the wiser and kinder people in the show already know: that there is meaning in life in spite of those existential truths. He shows throughout the show through the other characters that there is hope and that it isn't all meaningless, and right at the end Tony realises that too. I can see you dislike the fella, and fair enough, but at least try to understand what you're watching.

As a huge fan of Ricky's early stuff (probably evident from my name), his solo stuff has been so disappointing. Derek was so heavy-handed and worked backward from the premise of 'how can we make the audience cry'. After Life was even cornier, I couldn't sit through it all. Same with 'Life on the Road.' The Office was brilliant because the characters had complexity. You'd go from seeing Brent as pathetic and unlikeable to genuinely wanting him to succeed. Or at least people could have a very different perception of him. Tony just comes across as a total cliche designed to be the 'loveable misanthrope'. I think Ricky is great with silly humour (as in the RSK shows), but for structure, wit, depth, nuance etc., he really needs Merchant to reign him in. Combined they are a gold mine. I really liked Extras, and loved everything they've done with Karl.

One of the main problems with After Life that I had was that it wasn't an accurate portrayal of depression whatsoever. As someone who suffers myself, it seems so wrong to go about being a fucking relentlessly nasty person to everyone you know. When you're depressed, you tend to hide it - put on 'the mask' as I call it, and tell people you're alright whilst suffering inside. Ricky Gervais tried to tackle a subject he clearly doesn't know much about, and in my opinion, failed. Also, saying the word 'cunt' for shock value isn't top-tier comedy, it's just lazy shite.
@pykamirulol2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be surprised if it's not even in there for shock value. Of course, I have no idea where you live, but in Britain, or in certain areas in Britain, cunt is a pretty diluted word. It's just another swear here.
@the_local_bigamist2 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen it but as someone who suffers from depression (bipolar, with depressive episodes), it really does annoy me seeing "depression" just being interpreted as being sad, gloomy etc. It is such a complex condition and seeing it portrayed as someone just moping about is akin to people telling you to "just go for a walk! think about something else! get a new hobby" etc. And as you say, when you're depressed you often do everything you can to hide it from people, even from yourself at times. I get the impression that Ricky Gervais wants to be seen as this really kind and caring person who portrays people who might not otherwise be portrayed but it comes across as fake, gimmicky, and narcissistic and in the end, its all about Ricky Gervais feeding his own ego. The Derek thing made me feel uncomfortable from what I saw of it. I get what he was trying to do and I suspect that he really thinks that he's doing the right thing but is actually driven by a huge ego. He's like the Bono of TV world.

I managed to hate-watch it for about half the first series but couldn't get any further. The character Ricky plays is just...him. It's him, getting a chance to place himself in a fantasy land where he administers to the locals, heals their wounds, transforms their lives with his nihilistic cuntery, for which they're all bafflingly grateful. He also places all his own opinions in this fantasy land, and sets up the scenes so that his arguments are only ever met by the stupidest, most obnoxious people, and he easily bests them. Once you begin to understand what he's doing with the show, ie. creating a fantasy world with him as a kind of Jesus like figure in the middle of it all, it all makes sense. You see the underlying structural motivation of it all, which is 'make the main character look brilliant/cool/funny/charming at all times. The way the characters are all either nasty thickos who Gervais can ridicule, or helpless, doe-eyed simple folk who he can teach to grow by example. The most nauseating bits are where one of those side characters looks up at him, eyes wide, and says 'I don't know how you do it', or 'I'm so sorry about your wife, you're so brave'....and it immediately hits you that Ricky Gervais wrote those lines _for himself._ It's like Ritchie from Bottom writing those valentines to himself - it's the most narcissistic project I've ever seen on TV.

Watching Ricky Gervais attempt to stroll cooly through the park with a leather jacket/shades on and a dog lead draped over his shoulder was laugh out loud funny in episode 1 - how can someone be so self deluded in their image(?), but the fact this happened again in literally every single episode became tragic. The vested 'sports' Ricky through series 3 had me and the wife rolling around in stitches laughing AT him. I actually binge watched the first series in an afternoon (something I never do) because the premise was somewhat captivating and I thought it would go somewhere. Ultimately it didnt really but it was an entertaining enough ride. The second series was more of the same and it became clear it should have been a one off. The third series just felt like an absolute slog - how on earth did he get away with making the exact same series, 3 times? The home videos with his wife, accompanied with Gervais' idea of cool music whilst drinking whiskey on the sofa, were particularly tedious.

Not to mention that bit where he uses his money to assist the drug addict's suicide, rather than get him some help. I just couldn't believe what the fuck I was watching. This is the problem, middle aged woman who are touched emotionally by it but also find the word ‘c*nt’ every 5 minutes incredibly funny. That’s the new band of Gervais fans who are raving about it and given it the platform it doesn’t deserve.. No offence to your Aunty of course

@@nickyjlyons Yep, it's the mums who like it. My step mum didn't like the Office, but liked Mrs Browns Boys. She likes After Life. Says it all. Facebook Karens.

@@bkneezy Spot on. I’m picturing that scene in extras where the studio audience are wearing t-shirts with popular catchphrases and sayings on - “Garlic Bread”, “Am I bovvered?”…and now a middle aged Facebook Karen wearing one that reads “Tubby Little Ginger C***”

I love the swimming scene. Is that wisps of black hair you can see to the left of Kerry Godliman's head? And he says it wasn't CGI?

So glad someone has either the same or very similar criticism to afterlife as me, don’t know why it seem to get universal acclaim

Ricky needed Steve’s structure and nuance, Steve needed Rick’s performance and star power. Left alone Ricky doesn’t have a fucking clue how to write good comedy.

Ricky's stand up is horrendous

Need to splice this up into a few bits. The swimming bit definitely, so funny.

The incredible thing with Afterlife was the writing and filming process. Gervais always tweets his first page and last page of the script, as he starts and finishes the script. Each series sees him write a complete script in a matter of weeks, then immediately start filming,then 4 weeks later it's on Netflix. It's like he just shites all over the page and says "that's it"

Fun fact: Rivky Gervais is actually an Atheist dont you know.

Have many people seen Karl Pilkingtons ‘Sick Of It’? It honestly shits all over anything Gervais has done since The Office. Didn’t get much attention as it was more of a comedy/drama instead of the travel shows and only being on Sky but it’s fucking so well done it shocked me.

Yes! Deserves more praise and is way better than anything Gervais has done lately

Touches on a lot of similar concepts Ricky tries to in After Life, but just does it a lot better

@Stinko De mayo you’re absolutely right. Karl is so interested in the world and people, he’s an autodidact. An idiot abroad was the most misnamed show, his brain just zags and zigs where most peoples don’t. ,

Merchant indirectly (I think he meant it personally against afterlife) made a diss about it on twitter when he was asked what his least favourite bit of movie shorthand was and he said ‘watching old movies of dead child/wife = inability to move on’ Everything merchant has done since office has been so much better than the garbage Ricky has done. Aside from the KP podcasts which was also both of them
