Rich people in academia often conflate 'intelligence' with 'knowledge', thinking that how smart you are is defined by how much you know and have read. They do this because it's a way for them to feel better than the rest of the world. Historically, knowledge has been gated by money. Reading used to be an activity for the rich. It separated them from the poors. Having a large vocabulary, speaking perfectly, is all just a symbol for status. He's not really calling you stupid, he's calling you lower class. You're not 'one of them' and he rejects you for it. I believe this idea is reinforced by your described experiences with other people who made you feel the way Lloyd did. Not that those kids even rejected you at all, but you felt rejected and inferior, probably because of this idea. It's a class thing. I felt it too, I was a council estate kid that did well in school and ended up around all the middle class kids. Probably why this connected with me a lot. It's a weird feeling. Just a constant struggle for acceptance that you dont understand. I think you do possess intelligence 'of a certain kind.' A kind that is not akin to the wanky assholes like Lloyd, and one that to me, is far more valid and preferable.

If I had grown up in their ivory tower I would have the same misconception. The whit and intelligence, particularly with language, of some who end up in a low level English class is something which I'm sure would dumbfound those who haven't experienced it. The thing with the review, which is revealing, is the man's absolute lack of curiosity. A book reviewer with a lack of curiosity by definition is defined by his arrogance and is proud of it.

funny thing is that their disconnect from the real world, of what the average person suffers, help re-affirms their own biases. that it must be that they have *all* this knowledge, (for example, managing to answer the odd university challenge question on mostly just literature, music or history questions), as they're from a more "intelligent" background rather than just a wealthy one. yet their interests and knowledge all seem to share a similar background to those who were privately educated, or went to oxbridge. if they start to ignorant of the world around them so that they don't have to think critically about what's going in, it prevents them from being humble enough to know you're not an expert in anything, except maybe your job or chosen field of study. they'd rather re-affirm their own biases that knowledge/being "cultured" in various arts aren't vastly affected by socioeconomic background, that it actually results in them proclaiming irrational logic and unintellectual arguments. no dialectical materialist discussions on the socioeconomic factors regarding types of knowledge and interests that people are limited to, just classist shite xx I grew up in one of the worst areas in scotland on a council estate until I was about 13, so did my brother. my brother managed to get a bursary on top of saas at edinburgh uni and skip the 1st year cause of getting all As in his advanced higher, despite us being from a background where we got free school meals lol. he said it was mental adjusting to that environment. where you're surrounded by upper middle class people, and you're supposed to just know all these upper middle-class interests. even people who were trying to be nice will accidentally make you feel like you're not from their world at all quite often. although he adjusted in the end, since there's a lot of decent people there still.

I think the core issue is he wasn't saying he didn't like a book such as a fiction novel, he said he didn't like the person. it was a very personal attack. and from someone who is hardly great himself, that is what makes it more annoying. who is this 2nd rate musician to stand in such judgement?

I think Limmy has highlighted perfectly that there is a phenomenon of people that are so deluded and pretentious that they genuinely think they are better than a saliently gifted, authentic, working class fella from Glasgow. I know who id pick any day of the week. Old Lloyd Cole put some French scribbler's name in one of his songs to impress a girl and some NME writers who are now right wing scumbag pundits absolutely PISSED themselves over it, to show that they were as smart as they perceived the singer to be. This got him labelled with the *cleverness" tag, a flattery that seems to have become frozen into him upon the moment of his achieving some ephemeral level fame.

A wee anecdote, Limmy, regarding Lloyd being well read: In his pomp, Lloyd was once asked by the NME about his favourite literature and the three novels he picked out were from the Literature course he did at Glasgow Uni😊. I should know because he sat behind me in lectures (probably stealing my song ideas over my shoulder.) He’s a phoney who’s written some good pop songs - of a certain kind - but he’s not quite as highbrow as he would love to appear. And that voice!

Listen to this, Limmy. I used to think Noam Chomsky was clever. But I don’t think that now. I think he’s a charlaton. “Different kinds of intelligence” as a concept is interesting and kind of a brilliant quote. He’s saying your ‘of the earth’, common folk. Which is an intelligence of wits as opposed to lofty academic pursuits. They didn’t actually comment on the prose itself, only that it was too violent for them. But this is a fancy fiercely intellectual program. If you get your book reviewed on the Joe Rogan show you probably would get more praise. It depends on the content of the book and to whom it would appeal. Chris Moyles released his autobiography he obviously didn’t write and according to Stuart Lee, Moyles himself furnished the back cover with his own quote “A good toilet book”. I guess he means for reading in, when on the toilet. Which I assume some people do. So he’s thinking about his target market. It doesn’t really matter how well written your book is. The content is what is important to most people and the kind of thing it offers. So the reviewers are acting from the perspective of the program producers more than from their personal perspective. Because that is how you make an effect piece of TV. By focusing and amplifying simple things so that the program is easy to identify with for the targeted viewership of middle class people. So they are in a way, acting. I actually found it difficult to figure out what they actually do think, it was all pretty vague. Whether r not he lies the main character doesn\t’ speak to whether or not he found reading the book enjoyable or at least interesting. That is left to the viewer’s imagination.

"Intelligence of a certain kind" is something you would say to describe an animal, like a crow or something 😅 Crows have a certain kind of intelligence. It was a snid condescending remark, it was uncalled for and only made to make himself feel/look better.
@TheTyke
@TheTyke 9 ай бұрын
Not true for Animals either, though. It's just a lack of Human understanding and perspective on other species' intelligence. What we keep seeing and learning with more and more research and study is all living beings are conscious and intelligent. Not just of a certain kind, either. Even though all individuals do express intelligence in their own way, it is equally intellectual.

Over protective mothers are the best and to be feared. Let people think they are better than you if you wish to manipulate them. Females are the best at it. I think. To be fair.... Lloyd Cole has always been seen as genuinely intelligent. Female students loved him in the day. He name-checks lofty novelists in his songs, whilst Limmy is obsessed with James Corden. That's what he means about intelligence of a certain kind.... Lloyd would feel Corden is not worthy of his attention. Just saying. And Lloyd Cole is both famous in England and Scotland.
