I guess your mom probably saw your question as disrespectful to your dad rather than being curious because racism was and is such a raw subject. Growing up in the Caribbean I felt the impact of colorism being a darker shade than most girls I went to school with. It’s a topic that affects one psychologically and back then, thus feeling of inferiority was not combatted by our parents and fore-parents. You were never told “you’re yellow and ugly” but always “you’re black and ugly”. I try to tell my kids everyday how beautiful they are! We as mothers have to help our little black babies feel worthy and loved and equal!! I hope you were able to talk to your mom about it and clear the air.
