Fifty years after the notorious Cleveland fire, clean-up efforts have had successes in communities located inland from the Lake Erie shoreline. In this segment of Great Lakes Now, produced by WVIZ-TV/Ideastream, see how otters, eagles, community water treatment and even beer are part of the story.

So my questions would be : where did Cleveland and all the other river towns get clean drinking water during the 1900s ? Lake Erie ? And today, is Lake Erie or the Cuyahoga River the main source ? And which source is actually the cleaner one ? It really is unbelievable that as recently as the 70s people were paying so little attention to our drinking water resources.

Cleveland's water comes from Lake Erie. Back into the 1800s they had water intakes that were not very far offshore, which were to close to influence from the Cuyahoga (and caused considerable disease and death). The current water intake that has a structure that is above the water is, the "Five-Mile Crib." It was built in 1904. There are a couple other intakes near the Crib that are completely underwater. These days, Cleveland tap water is pretty good.

So the EPA cost us the steel industry and manufacturing. Based on lies in Life magazine. Great.

Big fucking deal. Would you rather have lakes and rivers in Ohio and elsewhere still catch on fire? Dumbass.

Why can't we have both? Is it really that hard to be environmentally responsible and create American industry/jobs at the same time? Me thinks corporate monopolies and political donors have something to do with it..
