After the Freeze - Did Covering the Plants Work?

Today we'll remove the protective frost covers off my newer plants and see if they made in through our Central Texas freeze. We had several days of temperatures in the 20's with windchills in the teens and this could very possibly have killed the newest plants in the garden. Come with me as I check out the possible damage........ or maybe they all survived!!

Next time you walk or drive by a Pride of Barbados plant stop and pick a seed pod. Let the pod dry out , then open up the pod and plant those seeds in some good soil. They are easy to grow. Full sun and keep watered.

I'm in San Anton area. I've been eyeballing some of the Snow on the Mountain jasmin for my garden, so that's good to know it will survive! Not sure if bearded iris are new to you as a gardener. One tip I gleaned from the grower I got mine from, was to check the rhizomes to make sure none of them were heaved out of the ground by freeze. That's a common problem. I've had that happen to a couple of rhizomes. Just replant them so they're secure if any do. And check to make sure they haven't gone soft also. I imagine your garden is beautiful and serene in the spring and summer based on what you showed in the video!

Thank you for your Iris tips. I will definitely check to see if any have heaved out of the ground and replant. I'll also check for those that might have been freeze damaged. I really appreciate your comments.

What kind of iris do you have? I’m having my first go at them in Houston

The bearded iris is what I have. They are very tough and can handle our extreme heat and alkaline soil. They blossom for only about two weeks in early spring. They like applications of 5-10-5 fertilizer about every month to keep multiplying and spreading.

@@therockyhillgardener thank you! I have two bearded Iris in the ground and I can’t wait for them to bloom! Why do some of the prettiest flowers bloom for such a short time?😩 actually now that I think of it the ones I planted say reblooming, we shall see if that happens!
