I actually think it's great that the author explored a relationship between an adult man and a teenage girl without it actually being romance. Her love for him was a distraction for her, a way to ignore what was really going on. He realized that and chose not to take advantage of her.

This review and this comment actually kinda makes me want to watch it? lol I would typically avoid any anime with a teenager/middle aged man pairing like the plague, but the fact that some people dropped off at the end tells me that maybe Grex was right about the "romance" only really being a one-sided crush and an old guy who's just flattered by it but not actually interested. Maybe it'll end up being a bit of a Yuri!!! on Ice bait-and-switch (like how they made it seem like Victor was going to be the typical borderline predatory seme but instead, his relationship with Yuuri ended up very balanced and realistic).

The relationship between the two of them, giving eachother hope and new perspective of life was so refreshing and unexpected and so much better than just a normal love story would be. It's such a beautiful story. And its not perverse as people think it might be. The manager is a charming old man, who is nostalgic about his youth and the good old days. Meanwhile the girl, is going through depression and isolates herself from society. Somehow when both of them meet, they give strength to one another. She reminds him of His Youth, makes him feel worthy and he meanwhile, makes her feel powerful and strong; someone believes in her. Beautiful story. Personally i think its not about the romance, but its about two main characters that have been averting their eyes away from their own realities, running away and somehow found shelter under the same "umbrella". Im a bit disappointed with how they handled the ending though; with WiT studio animating the gorgeous background and my favorite Aimer singing the ED, too bad its not a two cours, or else everything wont be rushed and ended abruptly just like that. Really hope they took their time following the manga since its finally done with much sadder ending, would made a bigger impact; but sigh...oh welp.

@Badalight6 жыл бұрын
It's not that they were "slowly forgetting it". It's because that's not what the show was actually about. Akira's romantic feelings for Kondo were a fleeting moment of youth, vulnerability, sadness, and innocence. It was not a healthy love. However, it did give birth to a great friendship where both parties where able to grow and learn from each other.

It's interesting that you point out it's demographic because from that context it does seem like it is designed to resonate with a lot of older males because even if you are against the idea of dating a younger girl, it's still a nice feeling to be liked or confessed to by one. It actually becomes very uncomfortable when you put it in that context, like you begin to think is this just fanservice for middle aged men? But if it is, it's clearly more than that. I love age gap romances because when done right because it is rarely about them getting together and more about them helping each other or coming of age and why lie; everyone one of us in our youth has fallen in love with someone older than us.

As a teenage girl, I usually hate shows with similar premises to After the Rain. However After the Rain definitely became one of my favourite anime after watching it. It differs to other similar seinen anime in the sense that the female lead isn't shallow - she seems real. Her actions feel like something I would do and her feelings are definitely ones I've felt before. She isn't portrayed as idealistic, or an object of affection. Her sole purpose isn't to please the male viewer. I love both her and Kondo as characters as they are very well written and feel more alive than most anime protagonists. Tachibana's feelings towards Kondo aren't idealised, either. They feel real and raw and exactly what being young and disillusioned by love feels like. I'd definitely recommend this show to others, even those outside of the seinen demographic.

Says the little girl that reads and watches romance crap thats literally just fanservice for girls. Men are objectified much more than women. People dont care, just like they dont care if women ars objectified. Anyone saying they care are lying and projecting something. Objectifying fictional or people we dont know is ok. The whole gossip garbage women watch is just that. People objectified for entertainment. Movies, books and whatnot dont even have real people. The actors are idiolized, not objectified and even if their charactes are depending on the script and directors, they GET PAID FOR THAT, they choose that. Nobody is forcing anyone. Unless someone is being forced to be objectified in which case the problem is not the objectification but the being forced part. You should take all your little feminism crap and throw it out. Its just communism in disguise calling themselves democrats just like china with their bullshit "people's republic of china" or the best one: "democratic people's republic of north korea". I also place After The Rain as my favorite series of the season. The series plot and character development moved at a VERY consistent pace even for a short series. After the Rain handled two of the mains facets of life very maturely which are "longing" for veterans and "letting go" for young adults. A very good series overall. The subtle and some not so subtle use of atmosphere and body language to tell the story was also very welcome in this series. Many anime become too dependant on making drama too obvious to force feelings in the audience (Violet Evergarden as a recent example) and forget the genuine pleasure of letting the audience absorb the atmosphere to bring out those "feels" naturaly.

having read a few japanese classics, i can say that this anime very fittingly plays out like one especially Kokoro, and the way the storytelling portrays the themes. it's a very leisurely pace, very mundane, giving the reader time to familiarize themselves with the characters. humans dont live according to dramatic story beats, so it feels very genuine to learn the characters by observation something like violet evergarden does follow specific beats, but much more slowly and leisurely than you'd expect. it better provokes emotions by building up and releasing according to the beats. i definitely cried more, and the one-off episodes were beautiful setpieces with great payoff. but stories like Kokoro and Rain are the kind that just stays with you, as though they were people as real and mundane as yourself

I thought the series was perfect. I also really appreciated how Kondo showed restraint and respect towards the female MC, and never acted inappropriately towards her. In real life, people will often take advantage of young people's feelings, and have flings or mistresses for a time because of this, but I thought it made for a better story that the series saw them connecting and healing without resorting to "love and sex heal everything" nonsense. Their relationship ended up helping to heal both of their broken hearts when it came to their life dreams and aspirations, and I resonated very strongly with the overall message of the anime.

I finished this recently and it kinda hits hard because it's how I feel with my girlfriend. Our age difference isn't as large as akira and kondo's (we're 3 years apart) but while I managed to let things from my past overwhelm me and drop out of uni she pushed through and is working in her chosen field. Hell she even used to work with me when I was managing waiters, how kondo feels when he can't finish any manuscripts resonates with the way I feel about pushing myself to actually move forward.

I feel like we are always destined to meet someone important in our lives. These people will help to shape our lives and help us grow and mature along the way. These people are generally the ones who help you realize something that you haven't seen in yourself, and at the same time encouraging you to pursue your dreams. But the sad thing is that good things don't really last long and once these people have done their part in our lives, they would have to leave.(Although not all the time, there are of course exceptions but this is generally from my standpoint) And obviously leaving someone or something that we truly hold dear in our hearts is difficult. But you need to understand that people have their own problems that they need to take care of and not everyone can stay by your side and help you all the time. However, knowing that these people had the chance to come into our lives and change us to become the people who we are today really makes it a meaningful experience. So I guess life is about moving on and being thankful for all the actions that people have done for us in our lives. Life is after all a mystery and we are the solvers to it

I think the story is about how potential and reigniting one’s passions can be found in any stage in life. Even though the female protagonist feels that her crush for this older man is a distraction for what she considers the biggest failure in her life by quitting the track team. The male protagonist feels very drawn to her youth because it represents hope, he feels the older he gets the more alienated he feels from achieving his highest goals in life.

This anime is a poignant and heartfelt display of dreams, infatuations, life and emotions. I do not really feel great emphasis on the love story or on the lesson to never give up. I wish to view this with a different viewpoint and I have found one. Memories. I believe that this feeling that akira displays towards Mr kendo is a mere infatuation created to fill the hole in her heart. It is my say that this love whatever it may be is transient and will over time cease to be. This time with Mr kendo is a stepping stone towards her future. Mr kendo experienced in the ways and means of life understands that he is just the target of a teenage infatuation but this does not deter him from giving the right advice, help and comfort doing what a man should do. He does not take advantage of her but helps her recover her lost dreams. As this game of life goes on, he will fade away from memory becoming just a bright fleck who contributed towards her better future whereas he will remember her for that feeling of youth and energy that she awakened in him which will never fade away. We must look at this as two different souls with different dreams and different destinies who intervine with each other and reawaken in them feelings of happiness and confidence. The cafe, trees the shrine, chirping birds all contribute towards this realisation and the occasional look and expressions of characters have a deeper effect on the protagonists than we understand. I have finished watching this anime and have decided to understand it as a story of two people who after a fateful meeting have their lives changed and realise their dreams. I have chose to ignore all of the deep meaning and nuances but rather understand this anime as a simple, story of life, love and the mysteries of time

Away Away I definitely agree with your post. To add to it, I remember Hayao Miyazaki saying how his ideal version of on-screen relationships are those in which both individuals change each other for the better, but don’t fall in love and “end up together”. I think that can definitely apply to what you were saying about how they’re both their own separate individuals who ended up helping each other out in ways they didn’t even realize until the end.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Thank you! This was the review I feel like needed to be made. As many people only concentrate on their “romance”. Their relationship is much more about personal healing and the innocence of youth rather than a fiery taboo.

It makes me sad, because I want them to fall in love with each other. It's so weird, I know, but it's just so sweet. I'm attracted to a lot older guys, and Tachibana's my age, so it makes me really hopeful XD but Kondo has a kid, so that would be odd and strange, and I assume pretty difficult for all three people. I was hoping I could indulge in a story of a younger girl and older man falling in love, but no, I've got this emotional mess! What it truly is-is more meaningful and beautiful story.

Really good analysis. I got the true meaning of this story the first time I watched the anime. If you expect this story to be a romance, you'll be disappointed. It is about healing and not giving up. It's never too late to do what you love, and you're the one that sets your own limits. I also liked this feeling of awkwardness between the protagonist. You clearly know that their relationship is wrong and polemic, but somehow you still want to see them together. At the end it is more like an ageless friendship, that makes you feel wholesome in many ways.
@giboit.6 жыл бұрын
I do think that the show gave more attention to Kondo. Just look what we know from both of them: Kondo: His son, best friend, dreams, the reason why his marriage ended, his employees perception of him, his hobbies, his thoughs, and a lot of things from his past. Also, all the mental monologues came only from Kondo. Akira: Her childhood friend, her mother (one episode) and her problems about the club she belonged. We really don't get to know that much about her. It was a really good show (but especially when you notice that this isn't a love story but instead is a story about don't give up on your dreams).
@testest123445 жыл бұрын
We know all that we need to know about why she ended up where she is at the start of the show. The same for Kondo, but Kondo is defined by his past, that's why he keeps coming back to it. He's a middle aged man so of course he has more experiences to draw upon. Akira is still a teenage girl who doesn't have much life experience. >Also, all the mental monologues came only from Kondo. Did you completely miss his point about the show's visual storytelling? It served Akira mostly. It doesn't matter whether you convey a character's thoughts through visuals or narration, they both convey the same thing (and visual storytelling is much more effective).

I'm a person who's seen the full manga (still waiting on the full English translation) and the show. I'm first of all, really _glad_ that you didn't have to bring up the age gap romance. I remember being on Tumblr and the net around January the time Episode 1 came out and the and the amount of sheer disdain from the series purely from the age gap alone was pretty outrageous. I ended up writing an objective review to Episodes 1-2 for the show, and up to 45 for the manga to clear things up. I spoke about how we would need to look at the show with my perspective that we needed to think about it in context, and how it dealt with the issue of underage dating, which is a problem in Japan. There was a fairly annoying site that looked at "anime through a feminist lens" and their real gripe with it was Kondou's "predatory nature". While I can see now that yes, it was in a seinen magazine and perhaps that Kondou did look a little, I don't think it was with any malicious intention. Also, Jun Mayuzuki, the creator, is a female. And Akira isn't really put into fanservicey moments, in both the manga and the series. I *think* there's going to be a Series 2 for KoiAme, but I don't think any real announcement has been made yet. However, the live action movie is meant to be coming out on May 25th, so I'll be checking that out too. I'm surprised you didn't mention it! I could add more to my comment, but I spoke enough as it is. Thank you for the fairly objective review and the way you handled it was very mature and sophisticated. I'm glad I re-found this video to watch later and did.

YES this overcomes the issue I've had with anime and mostly Japanese centric media where a teacher and student develop feeling which is always creepy. This grows past that and becomes a story of growth and how young love is and how adult life can be. It's not always creepy it's just life and how awkward but beautiful in the relationships made. This show isn't talked about enough and happy to see it talked about.

Beautiful anime with great scenery that draws you in. The melodic piano accompanied with strings set a mood since the beginning. Love doesnt have to be romantic, and as I had written down a while back, love in friendship, family and other relationship types can be as strong as eros love. We live in a society where everything is romanticized and I believe sometimes that can become selfcentered and have people get carried away. Mr. Kondo displayed maturity and his intention seemed to aim for Akiras recovery and return to her love for running; this type of love is agape. Agape love is aimed selflessly towards others without a long history of knowing each other and I feel like it was perfectly shown here. As a society we fail to see lasting and fulfilling love in anything else than romance but Im glad foe those in the comments that understood it and Im a sucked for love stories, but this one is great as it is.

I cried so much at last episode of the season. I really woshed for a romantic relationship to develop because they'd have to work with the taboo and all that and oh my gOD the ending. The song is so very good and Aimer nailed that longing feeling and nostalgia of things lost and gone. Also on a completely different note am I the only one that thought that some scene had very erotic undertones? Not fanservice style but really just a sexual tone? Like focus on the neck or sitted position of Akira, instance where she was thinking of her crush in her bed etc. Felt like it added to the fact that she was still a teenager developping feelings and exeperiencing them in new ways

“A gentle warning not to drop out of youth so quickly” I’m 22, and this sentence has been the hardest to hear and think about. Since I’m also already burnt out. I won’t ask on “how?” does one get out of this rut. Since the only simple answer is just to stand up and go. Since the only thing missing from the solution is not the strength to go on, but the resolve, and you can have as much resolve as you want. You just have to want to go on.

I disagree though Grex. This is a romance. Not every romance is happy. This would be unrequited romance. I see no reason why romance can't also talk about important issues. I thought it was better because of how it went over such important issues in a very careful, but on point way.

The romance isn't the point of the show, is what he's saying, not that it doesn't include romantic elements. Akira's love for Kondo is born out of the hole left in her heart from having to quit track. He was there in a time where she was sad and vulnerable, so she developed an immature and unhealthy love for him. She becomes quite obsessive and it is shown throughout the show to not be a positive thing. However, through her interactions with Kondo, she is able to slowly recover both mentally and physically and start her life back where she left off. Kondo is also able to heal some old wounds through the youth he finds in Akira and it lights a fire back in his own heart. The characters are able to grow through their interactions together, but it's not meant to be a romantic love story between the two of them. To suggest otherwise is completely missing the entire point of the narrative. It's why the "confession" is made so early on in the series, when any traditional romance would save that for the end.

Now that I think about it this wasn't really a romance anime to me, it's just a teenage girl's perspective on life that was looking for excuses to not pursue her dreams, this applies to actual teenagers too. Don't know how to explain it, it hit me because I never really tried to pursue my goals even when i was fully capable of doing it. Sad that anime lovers don't see this show in that light and consider them being separated a bad ending lol. I relate to the MC just a bit, mostly on her avoiding what she wants to do for some reason. To shorten it this anime is about the perspective of a teenager, at least that's what it is for me.

Thank goodness someone is talking about that. I admit, I'm waiting for an English translation myself, because I had to Google Translate the whole dang thing like a caveman, those last few chapters. I personally took it as them splitting paths FOR NOW, maybe later in the future they rekindle. It's clear Kondoi deeply cares for her, as he got her an umbrella/parasol that's multi-functional and all. Or, they could have been okay with being friends and have to return back to their own lives. But I don't get it. The ending line says something like "And she was in love, after the rain" so I'm like "What does it mean?" Either way I'm not that happy with the ending overall with the other characters. So much was crammed into one chapter, I don't know what was up with Mayuzuki there.

Katie M I think the secret was hidden in the title all along "love is like after the rain" After the rain Akira was in love. But who knows if she was still in love with Kondo or running. In my opinion.. it's both :)
@katiem91286 жыл бұрын
sara kilani I knew about that ending line, I'm just saying that the ending line of "She was in love after the rain" wouldn't fit if we interpreted them as just being friends. And I doubt it would be said like that if it were about running. Apparently the name "After the Rain" is the ENGLISH title BUT (and I always use this one), "Love is like After the Rain" is the literal translation of Koi wa Ameagari no You ni.
@AintIastinker6 жыл бұрын
Katie M Exactly.. the whole title is very important since it foreshadowed the end of the story. I like that there were a lot of things left unresolved like Akira's love letter (presumably) and Yoshizawa's career choice .. it leaves a lot of room for how you want this story to end and it kinds tells you that there's no such as a real ending .. life goes on. I hope that made sense.

Love between different aged people can work. My wife is 7 years younger than me and we have been married for 33 years now. Age difference is relative. I'm 60 now and she is 53 but if i had met her when i got out of the army at 20 she would have been 13. We met in 1985 when i was 28 and she was 21 so the age difference didn't matter. I could see a season 2 or movie about them when she could re connect with him as she graduates college. That would be very cool.

BlueLemon Power imbalance isn't automatically unhealthy, that's such a simplistic point of view. it can be bad if the more powerful person takes advantage of the "weaker" one, but they can also use that power to help the other person. Life isn't black or white.
@1lamouna6 жыл бұрын
They're 28 years apart. Vastly different scenarios here.
@genduncan5066 жыл бұрын
SpaghettiNoodlez my boyfriends parents are 26 years apart. his dad was a teacher (at a different school) and his mother wanted to study to also become a teacher when she finished school (legal age here is 16). there is a huge danger with an age gap that large when one of the people is still young, specifically because of the power dynamic. thats why we have an age we say is "underage" in the first place, to help protect young people. but to say that a relationship cannot work and that it is unhealthy is a bit far fetched. the unhealthiness with the power dynamic is only if the elder treats and thinks of the younger as a child, and if the younger thinks of the elder as someone who should be in charge. then both parties are not equal, one has more control than the other and maybe even has control OF the other. if they both treat eachother like adults? if they both communicate openly and on equal footing like a healthy relationship should? then there is no problem. We should be somewhat suspicious of large age gaps with a younger party involved, for sure. but it shouldnt be solely based on "the older male is manipulative!" or "the older woman is just sex crazed!" because thats just cruel.
@1lamouna6 жыл бұрын
Gen Duncan I never said the relationship cannot work. I'm not against relationships with large age gaps, my parents themselves have a 13-year gap and its working just fine for them. I just wanted to emphasize that the more dramatic the age gap, the more difficult it's going to be to keep the said relationship going. Some of that is seen in this anime when her boss starts feeling insecure about his age and what others would think. It's only human nature to feel self-conscious about such things. This can get in between such relationships and usually breaks them apart. But, like you said, if they're both able to treat each other like adults and convey their thoughts and feelings properly, there should be no problem.
@Freezient6 жыл бұрын
BlueLemon I dont like relationships with an age gaps as much as the next guy, but for some reason it always annoys me when someone brought up the “power imbalance” thing. I mean, I agree with what you’re saying of course, but you’re saying that dating someone exactly your age your not gonna get this “power imbalance”, which can also possibly happen if you’re with someone your age, sure its less likely for that to happen, but it depends on each person’s experience and maturity, that can still happen
