Don't know about England, but in America the old nails, the usually square ones were identified by the shape of the head. The shape of the nail heads were patented and you can sometimes know who made them. Interesting carpentry fact. "We have a bunch of things with holes in them..." LOL

Hey Gail and Alex, I love the amazing bits of history you both discover and share. My favorite so far is the eggate Alex spotted. I found a rock that looks as though it's a pickle, when it's wet. It's a frosty green when dry, Its been in my collection for almost 30 years. I'm not sure if I like it so much because of its characteristics or the time in my life it represents. I cherish those memory's, I'm sure you both build wonderful memory's together, that's worth more than anything you will ever find. I'm still keeping the cool stuff though😁

I've always wanted to go mudlarking, beach combing, fossil hunting etc but due to circumstances never had the chance. My soulmate of 21 years was a field archeologist, we both had a passion for history. Sadly he passed away suddenly in Feb 2021, watching your and other mudlarkers videos on KZbin brings some happiness back into my life.

So sorry, it must be a very difficult time for you. We both find that beachcombing and mudlarking is very meditative. I think it's because it's usually in a tranquil location - on the beach - in the woods - and you are so engrossed in what you're doing, nothing else (not even time) exists. We often feel as if we have walked through a time slip - what feels like an hour usually turns out to be three or more! It's very therapeutic. If you can, you should give it a try. Gail & Alex xx

The sound of that wind blowing against-through your window is so haunting sounding and is fitting as background noise for going through all of these long ago items cast off as garbage, but being given new life!
