On the eve of the Ukraine aid vote in the U.S. House of Representatives, Ukrainian frontline gunners told RFE/RL that they would lose the war without more ammunition. The troops say their artillery is the main thing keeping Russian tanks from overrunning Ukrainian infantry.

"...it would require a technological advantage of Ukraine and it's partners over the Russian Army." I'm thinking that if the UK comes through with their laser defense for UA, that might be a good and relatively cheap way to deal with incoming missiles and drones. The US is testing similar defensive weapons and should do that as well. This is win-win-win; UA gets a valuable defense against Russia's attacks, and the UK and US military+contractors get real-world testing of the systems.

Thats pretty smart. Unfortunately the problem isnt actually clearing the mines, its the issue of covering them while exposed to russia's defense in depth which requires multiple defenses, trenches mines obstacles barbed wire booby traps, etc to be cleared while in full view of russian fields of fire, machineguns, ATGMs and helicopters launching missiles at the engineering units all while they have to clear the already dangerous obstacles. A tough task for any army

The problem with Ukraine, by the frontline soldiers own admission, has never been a lack of artillery ammunition contrary to what pundits and the ISW have constantly allege. Their real problem is lack of adequately trained soldiers. It is apparent as evidenced by stories of Ukrainian units either surrendering or bailing out of their positions in retreat. Russia has virtually an inexhaustible supply of trained combat personnel and easily outstrips Ukraine’s ability to recruit/conscript soldiers. In the final analysis it doesn’t matter how many shells Ukraine gets if there is no one to shoot them.

Apples to oranges. An extremely light 155 towed artillery piece is a very different device compared to a far more complex, and heavy self propelled and self loading artillery piece. Those self propelled guns being far more complex to replace parts/repair as well as heavy also make it difficult to hide. Very expensive to lose besides being very easy to damage. It has its critical role but light, easy to field and maintain artillery has its special role. Finally, cost - the American M777 is very low cost compared to self propelled so there are far more of them.

What irritates me is, the focus is on "other countries to do xyz", I don't know what world this is but in most societies if you want something done right and dependable, you HAVE to do it yourself. Aid is temporary and will run out again, where is this Ukrainian ingenuity? two+ years into full scale; and production is not into overdrive? need more? build more factories and keep building. Production is KEY, expecting handouts will lead to defeat. I don't "expect" AFU to hold back or even defeat ruzzia, hell I expect Baltics and Poland to be invaded and western forces to enter this conflict. Zero expectations on AFU, if they can defeat or what ever the end objective is?, great that's a bonus. But my expectations are none. Sidenote: I don't have access to intelligence but I truly feel as Ukraine leaders have been holding back supplies and depending on western political support is how much they allow to the frontline. I feel the frontline are doing the best they can with what they are given. Leaders are really good at diverting accountability onto others

Horses for courses. For starters, during the mud season (i.e. right now) towed artillery is much lighter in weight and easy to transport. M777 was designed to be airlifted, you can't do that with self-propelled arty. Not having an engine it won't break down, and doesn't need fuel. TLDR: the 'best' depends on your criteria.

Then what happens next?! After spending all of the aid and there is no continuity Ukraine will not win the war! North Vietnam and the VC had continuous and uninterrupted supply of weapons and material from the USSR/Warsaw Pact, China from start thru victory! If Ukraine can't have the same they will never defeat a superpower!

The guy who said that Ukraine is not going to get a breakthrough even if they get a lot of Aid and Military help because it comes down to needing a technological advantage over Russia uninformed or biased towards Russia because that is not a strength of Russia in this world at all they are behind technologically Ukraine is on par with them technologically even if America never stepped in mostly because they have both been using mostly large stockpiles of old Soviet equipment also if anything I say that Russia is slightly behind Ukraine technologically speaking in the fpv kamikaze drone category also Ukraine has been getting a very advanced technology and if America really wanted to which it hasn't gone close the ability that it has to pump Ukraine with highly advanced modern weapons but what it has helped with is still way more advanced than pretty modern compared to anything Russia has the thing that Russia has which is not the technological advantage is it has a government and guy in charge that isn't afraid of getting voted out of office he's not afraid of doing something wrong and then the news in Russia writing about it and people hearing about it from the news and getting mad and interning voting him out because they're not allowed to write about it so he's able to mobilize people forcefully only a country like Russia where there is no fair elections at all the government and power has complete Monopoly dance the corruption with the people in power they will ruthlessly kill off their citizens in Russia in an attempt to not lose the war so it's as bad as a huge part of it it's not half of it and the other part is the large stockpiles of Soviet equipment

A super power like Russia? A loose federation of dissimilar countries with poor GDP (< Italy) versus USA, UK, other NATO nations, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Ireland, and many more. Now NATO has 32 member countries. How many when Putin started SMO to claim victory over NATO expansion in three days in February 2022? How many NAZIs are in Kremlin? Russia does not have any brothers anymore, only orphans. What a shame!

It won't matter. russia can not win.
