I forgot how much more of a piece of shit Henry was than his dad. Pappy was definitely the most awful but Henry legit made his wife miserable, his daughters sick, and caused the Jacksons unnecessary hardship out of pure selfishness and even made Hap help bury his dad.

Whether Asian, Black, Hispanic and White, or multi-racial, conflict and war is difficult and horrific; and whether leave or after discharge, often challenges continue.

Lol that's absolutely not what this movie is about. This is a poor explanation as well. The movie is about change. It's set in the US because we have such rapid and dramatic change as a young republic but it happens in all countries. There are three stories being told. The older father of both the black family and white family: they are still based in the old ways of slavery and more importantly the racial supremacy dynamics of American slavery. The black father constantly laments on the idea that no matter how hard he works he will never get ahead and his only hope is his children do. The white father laments on how his sons aren't good enough , even though both are better and more well off than him, and the country is changing too fast for him to keep up so he clings sadly with an iron fist to what little he has in this old muddy town. The second is the wives, two women dealing with both spectrums of tradition as women and wanting change for themselves to have recognition and be independent voices but they are also "mudbound" by their husband's and positions in society. They want progress but feel guilt and as if they are abandoning their families when they strive for it. The third are the young sons who represent the future. They both are shocked into the truth which is we are all human during the war and after the black son is treated as an equal in Europe and the white son is saved by a black pilot both dispel their views about race and connect back in their hometown. Listen to the monologues, this is an excellent movie that could be a play if it wasn't already. And should be considered when people think too much progress is an issue just because they don't understand it
