The thing with most "vocal coach reaction" videos is that not only do they often carry no special insight, but by virtue of carrying no insight they kind of betray the fact that the coach doesn't really care about the music being discussed. You thoroughly prove the opposite for yourself, by remaining informative in your breakdown while clearly enjoying all the music you go through. I love it!
@melodica54073 жыл бұрын
I couldn't care less of those pretentious vocal coaches who does reaction without actually able to demonstrate them.
@lopolik3 жыл бұрын
yeah I agree, I actually follow only one vocal coach channel, only Chirs, and one Extreme Metal Vocals channel from Poland.. The other ones focused on a type of music I don't really listen to, and were mostly just reacting and talking about it, and not really teaching it that well.
@EnergeticSpark63 Жыл бұрын
That long scream that you thought was looped, is not looped, nor artificially lengthened. Thats the rev actually screaming for 21 seconds.

I remember myself several years ago driving, getting into doing vocals and getting frustrated because I couldn't achieve M Shadows' sound, didn't quite get what he was doing to make this awesome sounding rasp. To the point where out of frustration I just let myself go without thinking how it may sound, reached as high of a note as I could with whatever rasp-thing I had. Funnily enough, I hit the vocal break and my voice fell apart into the most wonderful way. I was shocked and thought - Jimmy (The Rev)! That's what he's doing! Because it sounded so similar. Couple years ago, I found your channel, Chris, and stumbled upon a video where you were demonstrating the vocal break - scream approach. You were the first person I saw on KZbin showing this type of distortion and explaining it. The approach of not being afraid of sounding silly and making strange noises, embracing vocal break and, most importantly, acknowledging that you are NOT going to sound just like your favorite vocalist but you really can implement the techniques to discover your OWN voice, that's what I liked about you and your channel. And now, the circle closed - not only you did an incredible job of breaking down the Avenged song and telling everything about the techniques being used, you demonstrated it yourself! You did what many other vocal teachers fell short of. The most rewarding thing was seeing you reacting to Jimmy and appreciating his talent. It is the acknowledgement he deserved. A massive thank you for everything you've done.
@mikeg51902 жыл бұрын
When you say "The Rev does that kind of stuff really well too" at 8:25 while touching on vocal break up, its interesting you make note of it because Jimmy wrote this song, so what you're listening to is probably Matt singing what Jimmy originally did in a demo, which is so signature to his own sound. Really cool you caught and noted the translation between the two.

this is what makes Chris Liepe stand out among other youtuber "vocal coach" because he shows the entire process of how to get the sound by making those funny whiny cat, voice cracking sounds which is REALLY essential and he truly does demonstrate it. While those other "coaches" just blabs out random singing jargons and proceeds to demonstrate only the final product like "how did you just do that"? Lol

What a great analysis!!! Thats such a great point about telling a story within a phrase. I'm such an unabashed Avenged Sevenfold homer, and this is my favorite song of theirs. It has everything I want in a song: top notch orchestral instrumentation, vocal harmonies upon vocal harmonies, vocal performances that are "imperfect" but translate an emotion or feeling that makes it jump out of the speakers, shredding guitar solo... I always tell people that if you want a masterclass on vocal harmonies, Sidewinder and Afterlife are top-of-the-food-chain and I'd put them up against any song by any artist ever... Sia's Elastic Heart is right there with them.

Please do "A Little Piece of Heaven" next. If you love listening to The Rev's vocals, you need to listen to that song. And the ending chorus where he's harmonizing with Matt is AMAZING! 19:49 - I don't think it's artificially lengthened, it has two screams one starts a few seconds after the first one, and is in higher pitch, but I guess the first one was shorter, because you hear the exhaust ending of only one scream so it's hard to say. But l would say if was just one scream this long, it would be harder to replicate than the ''another chance to LIIIIIIIIIVE'' scream, although both are amazing.

In this album and song all the band members made back up vocals so the live versions wouldn't sound so different from the studio versions (Like in WTF and City Of Evil). So in the chorus you can hear Synyster Gates, Zacky V and The Rev. P.S.: I think something clicked from the last A7X video with that stage whisper concept. I used to fall more into the old man voice side of things. Great video!

I know A7X uses comping like a lot of bands but it's not really obvious until you solo the tracks. Like the first part of the verse it's very clear that there are splices. So shout out to the mixing and mastering engineers for making it almost impossible to notice in the final mix.
