I cannot thank you enough for doing this Tom. How to know where to begin a drawing like this has been such a mystery to me until I saw your wonderful explanation. Thank you so much!

Excellent tutorial, thanks so much. I’m often fearful that my drawing will be visible in the finished painting, but I can see now that the line drawing can add beauty where it’s not too detailed.
@thomaswschaller
@thomaswschaller 7 ай бұрын
Thanks so much, Adrienne - As for your linework showing in the final work - this is really an aesthetic choice. It is not right for everyone, nor for every painting. Generally, I consider the drawing so much a part of my process that I don't wish to deny its importance in my final work. Like anything else - it can sometimes be overdone or too obvious, and just has to be balanced and decided on a painting-by-painting basis. I love to draw as much as I love to paint and so most often for me, I prefer when both techniques to work together in the final result

Hi Tom , I am a great fan of your approach to watercolor, In addition to watching your tutorials, I also occasionally hear the sounds of cabs and sirens in the background. As someone who lived and worked in Manhattan for years it's a wonderful sound an so reminiscent of many happy years in NY. Thank you for your tutorials as they have helped my painting enormously. Well…I guess if you take an hour and a half for a sketch, I maybe should take more than two or three minutes….sigh….
@thomaswschaller
@thomaswschaller 7 ай бұрын
This is a little more than a sketch - and I completed an intention and a composition sketch as well -And I was explaining a lot more than that as I was drawing. So if you could accomplish all that in 3 minutes - I'd love to see it

My late father-in-law, Dick Cole, was a former President of the AWS. He lived in Sonoma and painted the day he passed, a handful of years ago. Damn, was he talented. Having acquired some of his brushes, I recently took up watercolor painting and spend quite a bit of time looking for inspiration (and tutorials) of other works online. I'm not there yet but the exploration has taught me so much. Thomas, your work is so exquisite, reminds me of Dickie. Thank you for for such an excellent tutorial.

Holy smokes this is amazing, so intricate. Thanks for pointing the first part out. The second part came as a recommendation to me which i'm sure youll be happy to hear. I need to make sure i set a bell notification for your channel so I get reminded, maybe you could tell your viewers the same, you'd get more traffic. Loving your work, sooo inspiring. Can I try and paint one one day please? I presume youre doing this to share your process for education and technique purposes?

I would have done the opposite: first I would have found the vanishing point by intersecting lines in perspective provided by the pictures, then I would have traced the horizon by drawing it horizontal and passing through the vanishing point. You did a great job by eye thou
@thomaswschaller
@thomaswschaller 7 ай бұрын
That's not so different from what I did. But whatever works for you is fine. It's such a simple one-point perspective that it wasn't too hard to just eyeball it
