I agree! I started watching FT as a kid because I loved Cleese from Monty Python. It is predicated on his nutty sarcastic humor and sour demeanor, as well as his gifted physical comedy prowess, plus his interactions and miscues with Manuel. I adore this show!

Apparently John Cleese based Basil Fawlty on a genuine hotel manager. When Monty Python were touring, they stayed at a hotel and the manager was so obnoxious and rude that most of them left for a different hotel. John Cleese opted to stay at the hotel just to watch the hotel manager as he was so fascinatingly awful!

@@AfterWorkReactions Red Dwarf is brilliant - so good that it now stands alongside the sci-fi classics it parodied. Another one you should check out is "The Young Ones" ... about 3 students living in the same house as their landlord. They are classic student stereotypes .... the violent punk rocker, the hippie, and the wannabe political activist who thinks he's sticking it to The Man. It is so chaotic and funny - like a sort of OTT version of Friends crossed with The Inbetweeners ... most episodes result in their house being trashed! :)

I'm so glad you're doing Fawlty Towers. By far one of the funniest sitcoms ever made. The cast are hilarious and John Cleese is utterly hysterical as Basil Fawlty. His relationship with his wife is pure comedy gold not to mention his guests. He is his own worst enemy and it's one of the UK's comedy jewels watching him perform this role. It still has me crying with laughter all these years later.

Hear's an American mention "Red Dwarf" and immediately I start hearing: "It's cold outside there's no kind of atmosphere, I'm all alone, more or less. Let me fly, far away from here, Fun Fun Fun, in the Sun Sun Sun..." That one time an Elvis impersonator sang it (it happened in an episode, won't spoil which). Also, given the lyrics, it's the perfect anthem for being stuck at home in winter 2020.

According to the Office for National Statistics composite price index, today's prices in 2020 are 744.39% higher than average prices since 1975. The British pound experienced an average inflation rate of 4.86% per year during this period, causing the real value of a pound to decrease.in other words, £200 in 1975 is equivalent in purchasing power to about £1,688.79 in 2020, a difference of £1,488.79 over 45 years. As of this post 5dec20 the USD to GBP is £1 is $1.34 so that means £1,688.79 = $3,050.34

Fawlty Towers set a new high mark in sitcom comedy............just 12 episodes, 2 series of 6 episodes. 1 series in 1975 followed by second series in 1979. Each episode had quality writing, i believe each episode took at least 6 weeks to write, and it shows in the excellent end product. Many people in the UK still to this day can recall parts of the script from each episode. Excellent stuff......next episode 2 is the one with the builders, looking forward to seeing that.......:)

I'm told the entire show is based on a true hotel experience he had and that those he stayed with, left, but he stayed a few days more to take notes for the show.

Pay attention to the Fawlty Towers sign, it changes the order of some letters each episode. In a funny way.

Stick with it dude. Grew up with this show and I think the more you watch it the more you'll get into it. If you liked this one you'll love the upcoming ones

Before watching 'I'm Alan Partridge' it might be best to take a quick look at 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' -- the chat show Alan used to host before it got cancelled, after he killed a guest on live TV (with an antique gun he didn't know was loaded).

The only thing that dates this show after 45 years is the clothing. The humour and situations that Basil encounters are timeless. So glad you enjoyed it. Really looking forward to you seeing The Germans episode.

Great reaction , did you know that the character he plays is based off a real person he met years ago who also ran a hotel, such a shame something this funny doesn't have more series, looking forward to the next 👍

Classic British Humor, still as good today as when it was first aired, Cleese and Connie Booth (the blonde girl Polly) wrote it together.

John Cleese is a legend. Fawlty towers was a bit before my time but I loved it. It's about that time of year Josh... You've got to respond to The Royle family. It's like a tradition in my family to watch the Christmas specials every year.

I am British, went to public school (to Americans, confusingly that is the most expensive sort). I know so many people who would treat a 'Lord' exactly like this, based on nothing more that a suit, sounding a bit posh, and claiming to be a 'Lord' with a bit of diffidence!

John Cleese(Basil) who was also in Monty Python, was actually married to the actress playing Polly. They were in Cirnwall and ended up in a hotel whose owner was brutal on customer service. And taa daa a tv series was born
