You're the first American I've encountered reacting to Only Fools and Horses. There are loads of classic scenes and everyone has their favourites. The chandelier scene is an absolute classic. Just a couple of points to finish; a lot of British sitcoms have an element of pathos, and that's certainly the case with Only Fools. Finally, some of the supporting characters like Denzil, Boycie and the legendary Trigger had some great moments too. Happy viewing mate! Best wishes from England.

Key thing to remember with this show is, it’s good from the start, but it gets VERY good the deeper you get into the series. It grew massively the longer it was on. Watch some of the later episodes if you can! Also, just to let you know, this is filmed before a live studio audience rather than canned laughter being edited on, which is much less of a problem in my opinion! I agree it doesn’t need it to be funny though

Hello from Swansea, Wales! 🏴🇬🇧 This legendary moment from Only Fools and Horses was taken from the episode Heroes and Villains. 22 million viewers watched its original broadcast on BBC One here in the UK on Christmas Day 1996, including most of my family. I was 5 at the time, but I think I must have seen it as well. To this day, Heroes and Villains is still the most-watched single broadcast episode of any scripted series ever on British television. It's a classic that everyone remembers and still have talks about. And Only Fools and Horses in general is repeated about a billion times a day. It's easily the best comedy this country has ever produced. It's very British in its humour, which means that most Americans wouldn't understand it, but over here it's been revered since it was first on almost 40 years ago. And all 64 episodes of Only Fools and Horses were written by the same man - John Sullivan (RIP). Something that never happens in American comedies. He was a genius!

It really is a great sitcom. There are other sitcoms that run a story from series to series, but this one lasted more than 20 years and struck a chord with almost all walks of British life. So well written. Josh, you picked up so much and read between the lines with just this short clip - nice one!

The series was so well written - even with the scene the context makes it even funnier. One of the best written shows ever.

The thing about Counsellor Murray is Del never misses a chance to take advantage of a situation this is something he does later in the episode. Love your infectious laughter.

You've got a rabbit hole ahead of you now Josh! OFaH is always top 3 episodes/scenes/characters in comedy countdowns in the UK. It started slow, shorter episodes, focused on the brothers, and grew into a whole cast and crew, even recording a special in Florida. You'll love it I'm sure.

Just discovered your channel today! I appreciate someone from the US making such an effort to consume this much classic British stuff. The live laughter has definitely had it's reputation ruined in the last few decades, both with the switch to canned, pre-recorded laughter on a lot of shows, and the force cues for the audience, but you're thinking more about what the laugh track has sort of become vs. what it was back in the early days of TV (along with how TV comedy has evolved). Originally, the idea was that it was essentially a stage formatted performance done on TV, back when TV was still an evolving format. So essentially watching a live show with a live audience. It actually works better in the older shows from say, the 70s, because the actors would single-take most of the performance, and leave in their cracking up and tripping over their lines. It also changes how an actor performs when they are acting to a live crowd in front of them. So the performer would gain something from performing live, and the audience would break the actors down. It basically adds a layer of tension when done right with the right cast, writers, performers, etc. A great example is "Are You Being Served?", in which the cast would regularly crack up mid-sentence, which would only further excite the audience, causing a feedback loop. Only Fools and Horses, Bottom, BlackAdder and all of the greats from the 80s and early 90s were some of the last shows to really utilize this in it's original, sincere format. Then the mid-to-late 90s (and somewhat earlier in US sitcoms), studios got lazier and started either using pre-recorded laughter, which never gels with the recordings properly, or using stagehands with cards or lighting cues to force the laugh at full register regardless of if the audience found it funny or not. tl;dr: I totally share your distain for the laugh track in sitcoms of the last few decades. It's purpose has long since died out, isn't being utilized sincerely anymore, and is a holdover from early-TV and the variety-act era. But definitely don't write it off completely! Think of it less as "telling you when to laugh" and more a live-recording for the performers in the older shows pre-abuse. The exceptions are in the few outdoor scenes like this, where it's been shot on location instead of the studio set, in which case it plays on a TV (sort of as an intermission) above the apartment set, while the actors prepare for the next live scene.

Love watching your reaction to these Brit comedies. You sèem to get our sense of humour in a way that escapes many of your countrymen. At the risk of repeating something that may be mentioned in an earlier comment, there is no canned laughter on this clip. Most of the episode would be filmed in front of a studio audience, with occasional external scenes played back to the audience at the appropriate point, and THEIR laughter is what you hear on the clip.

Even funnier in the context of where they are going. A top nod to Burt Ward with the hand punch. Mate, your laugh is so infectious.

If you watch episodes like the one with the chandelier and when they finally became rich after 30yrs selling out of a suitcase. Quality! Great vids by the way

One of the best written comedies ever. Every character has depth. Trigger, Boycie, Marlene, Uncle Albert. Characters who are warm and you care about. So many famous episodes like the singer who can't pronounce his R's and when they painted the Indian or Chinese restaurant in luminous green paint.

You definitely need to watch the entire series! Just start from the beginning and see how you go; it's a British classic and very relateable for the times it was recorded in. The story is wholesome but witty, delightful, hilarious, dark and ridiculous. You will love it, I'm sure. :) I grew up watching this despite not even being born in the time these episodes were even filmed and they still live up to this day. Loved this reaction!
