According to John Sullivan; the writer, the fist punch that Rodney does at the end wasn't in the script. Nicholas Lynhurst just did it because that was one Burt Ward's mannerisms in Batman!

You gotta watch the whole episode it’s funnier, they’re going to a fancy dress party and break down and that’s how that started. Also he wrote to her about something earlier on to do with the flat. Also the scene after is also hilarious when he gets to the “fancy dress” party and they’ve missed an important message due to their dodgy fax machines they showed earlier in the episode.

You really do need the rest of the episode to get the back story which makes this so funny. Think this was aired as a Christmas special, so was watched by an audience into the 10's of millions and so became an iconic 'watercooler' moment in British comedy. Love the vids.

I was watching the making of this sketch last night, so it was a Christmas special and was filmed in a cordoned off area where it wasn’t overlooked and they shot the sequence in one take using two cameras as soon as they finished running they were straight into makeup and the suits removed so the media couldn’t get photos and spoil the show for the public.

There are certain “sketches” from Only Fools and Horses that are like comedy royalty in the UK. From this to falling through a bar, the chandelier incident, Rodney’s prize holiday, Peckham Spring, the inflatable dolls or my personal favourite which I will simply refer to as “Gary” OF&H has an amazing collection of classic comedy moments.

Don’t forget, at the time this clip was revered as the pinnacle of OFAH comedy - in UK was talked about for a while in everyday conversation. These standout scenes were often saved for specials. True classic, up there with the chandelier scene for memorable episodes. Well done EB.

That was filmed in Bristol, I once worked in the building (now gone) that looked down onto that square. A lot of Fools and Horses was filmed in Bristol, Mandela House was a block of flats by the Bristol City Football ground and Boycies garage exterior shots were just around the corner. Superb script and brilliant actors.

Glad you liked this cut, a shame rules don't let you share the whole episode. Like folk have said you needed the whole thing to fully get it as when they eventually get to the fancy dress party and it's turned into a wake they ask Trigger if he knew it was a funeral wake as he's in a suit and tie, he replies that he feels stupid wearing it as he feels he stands out, even though everyone has the same. Del asks why and Trigger says he would have got changed if he had known it was a wake. Del looks confused and asks him why, because I came as a chauffeur is the reply. You ought to watch the series on tv if you can get it or if I can get hold of a cheap set I'll send it to you. If I get chance I'll have a gander at what I have of other stuff if you'd like it.
