Yeah, what's said here. 8 out of 10 cats is a current news based comedy show (which exists separately) and the host and team captains i.e. Sean and John part take in this comedic version of Countdown with guests. There are 2 games; one where you pick random letters and the winner is the one who gets the longest word. The second game is where numbers are selected and a target generated - person closest to the target wins. They play 2 rounds of both games in addition to the final round where they decode a unassorted word. Susan is linguistics specialist and verifies the words are corect and in the English dictionary. Rachel is a maths genius and checks the answers and provides alternative solutions if available. There's 3 guests every show and bring along a funny mascot/item. The guest you see here that's appears in most of these clips (his acting is purposely extra for extra slapstick comedy). He's a regular guest for a few seasons I believe. This show along with the original countdown and 8 out of 10 cats has been running for years, showcasing is success.

Just to add, 8 out of 10 cats is a comedy quiz about surveys, the "8 out of 10 cats" title comes from an old series of tv adverts for a cat food called Whiskas. The tag line in every advert was "8 out of 10 owners say their cat prefers Whiskas".

@@b2ab2a Also not that many are really going to see this a day late. I want to correct some things. "There are 2 games; one where you pick random letters" You don't pick the random letters, you pick a vowel or a consonant. The letters are suppose to be random, like a pack of shuffled cards. If you pick a vowel you'll get one of these, A, E, I, O, and U (Y). A consonant, B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, X, Z, W and (Y). The rest isn't aimed at you Faheem. You can only pick nine because there is only space for nine letters. Picking more vowels than consonant either makes the game harder or redundant if you don't have enough good letters to form a word everyone else cannot already see themselves. Once nine letters have been picked you have to form a word in 30 seconds. The biggest word you can form is obviously only nine letters. The shorter the word the smaller amount of points, the bigger the more points. The numbers round has six slots. You have small numbers 1-10 and large numbers 25-100. I believe picking more small numbers means the numbers game will be harder. So to each game there is a level of difficulty depending on which you pick.

Rachel then presses the button which generates a number and then they have to get closest to that number using the ones they picked (they can add, subtract, multiply, divide) but they can only use each number once. Countdown is a serious gameshow that's on in the late afternoon, It's very long running (since the early 80s), and is taken quite seriously. It's a very gentle, serious and polite game in the afternoon, very popular with old people in the uk. The comedians that appear on the comedy version are a total contrast to the ordinary version. They play two games, the word game is nine letters are chosen at Random, and the contestants have 30 seconds to make a word from the letters and the longest word wins. The numbers game is six numbers are chosen at random, and a computer chooses a number between 100 and 1000, and using the 6 numbers, once each, the contestants can add, subtract, multiply or divide the 6 numbers to get the number the computer chooses within 30 seconds, and closest to the number wins. Carol Voderman was the original person who did Rachel Riley's job and has been a big name celebrity in the UK through appearing on the original show (Rachel and Carol are both highly qualified mathematicians, and can usually solve the numbers games when nobody else can). Cats does Countdown is a comedy version of the show, which weirdly seems to have eclipsed both the original show and the comedy panel show that it started from. The thing with the cats and the other weird things you see happening is related to the title of the show. Nobody ever thought the original serious gameshow would be popular because every round has 30 seconds of "dead air", where the contestants try and work out the answers, but it works in a strange way because it allows viewers at home to play along. In the comedy version, they use the 30 seconds to pretend that Jimmy gets bored and does something to pass the time while the game is being played.

Countdown is a daytime TV competition show kind of like Scrabble. Contestants pick a mix of vowels and consonants and then have to make the longest word they can out of them for points. They have a maths round where they puck numbers and a random number is generated and they have to try and get to that number as a result. They also have a round where they unscramble anagrams. Its a serious daytime competition TV show but a while ago the channel that produces it had an event where they mixed different comedy shows with serious daytime shows and they made 8 out of 10 cats does Countdown, which was so popular it ended up continuing after the channels event ended.

Countdown is an afternoon game show that is often played by intelligent people and is very popular with the elderly. 8 Out Of 10 Cats is a comedy panel show. They combined the two for a one-off special for charity but it was so well received that they made a whole series from it and it's still going today! For a bit more context - The letters game: each team will randomly choose vowels and consonants, up to 9 and then are given 30 seconds to try and make the longest word out of the random selection of letters, which is why getting a 9 letter word is such a big deal! It's also worth the most amount of points. The numbers game: Works much the same, you pick up to 6 numbers. They're separated into two categories big numbers and small numbers. So big numbers are 25, 50, 75 and 100 and small numbers are 1 to 10 then a total is randomly generated and with what numbers are selected based on how many big and small number selections you've chosen, you have to try and get to the total number. You can use all the numbers but you can't use the same number twice! Again you're given just 30 seconds to do so and whoever gets closest to the number gets awarded the points.

Just so you can understand if you do any more Cats does Countdown stuff, the way Countdown works is as follows: Letters rounds - You pick 9 random letters (choosing consonants or vowels) then have to try and make as long a word as possible out of the letters only using each letter once. Numbers rounds - You pick 6 random numbers and can choose between 'big' numbers (25/50/75/100) or 'small' numbers (1-9) and then have to try and get to the randomly generated answer using those numbers. You don't have to use all the numbers but can only use each number once. You can do addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. Conundrum - There's a nine letter word scrambled up and you have to try and work it out first.

Theres a normal game show called Countdown in UK one part is trying to come up with the longest word of 9 drawn letters, the other part is using math with 6 drawn numbers to get to (or closet to) a target number. 8 out of 10 Cats is a comedy panel show about current events with same host and lots of same cast. 8 of 10 Cats does Countdown is this- a hybrid of the two and quite popular. :)

8 Out of 10 Cats is a panel show where comedians and celebrities will make guesses on news and statistics. Jimmy is the host of normal 8 Out of 10 Cats while Sean and Jon are team captains. Countdown is a Math and Grammar show that's been on British TV for decades and is very straight laced and family friendly. Suzy and Rachel are both on normal Countdown, Suzy being in charge of the English side of things whilst Rachel is in charge of the Math side. 8 Out of 10 Cats did a Countdown special a few years back and it was so well received it's become it's own regular show. The rules of Countdown are you ask for random letters and have to make the biggest word out of them in one round, then you get a random number and have to ask for "big or small" numbers to be able to reach said randomized number, then there's also an anagram round too. It's straight forward when you watch a full episode, but clips like this make it very difficult to catch on. Hope that helps clear it up a little further if no-one else went into full details on this aspect of the show, lol.

Cats does Countdown is a comedy spin-off of a classic British show, one that’s typically very serious and played by academics. The original show has been running since the 80s and continues today. The original Countdown is a game show with 2 rounds. There’s the numbers round where you pick how many big numbers and small numbers from a series. You then have to use those numbers to mathematically create the number at the top with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The letters round is where they pick from random vowels and consonants to make a word with as many letters as possible. Before ad breaks they give a countdown conundrum which is a long anagram but with a clue that viewers can complete, with the answer being shown at the end of the ads. At the end of the show there is another one that’s for the contestants. Where the original show has one contestant per side and a smooth voiced presenter, this has replaced it with 2 per side and comedian Jimmy Carr. The brilliance comes from the fact that nothing else is really changed, the numbers and letters experts are the same serious people so the contrast of humour is huge and the set is identical; just with less academically gifted comedians being the butt of the joke.

For the letters round, you select a random sampling of 9 letters, and try to form the longest word using those letters that you can, using each letter only once, so 9 letters is the max you can get. That’s what makes the clip where Lee Mack got ‘steadings’ Impressive. For the numbers round you choose 0-4 large numbers (25,50,75,100), and 2-6 small numbers (1-10) and with those numbers try to get to the target number using the basic mathematical functions (addition subtraction multiplication and division)

Numbers = One team pick 6 different sets of numbers (like the letters) and then they get a random number on the board (example = 289). The team who selected the different numbers then get 30 seconds to write down a set of calculations to get exactly (or closest to) the main number, i.e 289. Letters = One team picks 10 different random letters (vowels and consonants) and then get 30 seconds to re-arrange them to create the longest word possible (longer word = more points) Mix it up with banter, stories and jokes in-between the rounds. Final challenge is for both teams and they get a rude and/or funny "word/sentence" which is an anagram they have to decipher (again, in 30 seconds).

For some context, Countdown is the longest running quiz show on British TV, normally shown around mid-day and is a proper quiz for university students and such. One year, for a charity event, they did a crossover with the panellists from a comedy show called 8 Out Of 10 Cats. The resulting crossover proved so popular that they don't actually make 8 Out Of 10 Cats anymore, they just do their own version of Countdown.

Since I haven't seen the comment yet -- there might be a method to the silliness that often goes on during each round, as the clock counts down. Jimmy Carr hosted a game show briefly called "Distraction." Four contestants began the show, answering trivia questions. The answers were relatively easy, but buzzing in was not -- hence the name. For example, the buzzer might be surrounded by a cluster of cactus, or you might have to attach clothespins to your face during the round, or you might be wearing a shock collar that goes off when you buzz in. The "distractions" that occur during the rounds might be a callback to that show.

countdown is a show on every day in the afternoon in the uk for serious quizzers. they choose vowels and consonants from rachel, she displays them on the board and they have to make the longest word from the letters. this repeats a few times. and in between they have a number round. where they choose values of numbers and have to use them to get a total which she randomly shows. 8 out of ten cats is a comedy show where comedians compete to get the best laughs. this '8 out of ten cats does countdown' mashup is a thing they tried once for a laugh which clashes the best comedians with a straight show. and it worked! really well. totally subversive and the original viewers probably hate it - but its so funny.

Its a shoe based off maths and english. You pick random vowels, and have to construct words. Longest word wins. Then you pick random numbers, the machine does a calculation and arrives at a random number. You have to use all or some of the numbers to get the number the machine arrives at

You have to search "Joe Wilkinson's Poem" on KZbin. That's classic countdown gold!

If you really want to get into a British panel show, Would I Lie To You is a good one. Especially episodes with Bob Mortimer.

They have to ask for the letters (mix of vowels and consonants), then they have 30secs to make the biggest word out of it. With the numbers, they have to use the individual numbers (+-x\) to get to the target number in 30secs

Just stumbled upon your channel (probably because I watch lots of 8 out of 10 cats does countdown haha). I'm American but I lived in the UK for four years, and this show was one of my absolute favorites. The UK does panel comedy shows very well, and this one is fun because you can try to solve the anagrams and math problems yourself, but it doesn't take itself too seriously. The regular Countdown is a very serious, slightly stuffy show where everyone is terribly smart and slightly stiff. Adding comedy makes it fun :)

Countdown is the actual show. It has letter and number rounds. Letter rounds involving you trying to get the biggest word from the 9 letter selection. Numbers is trying to reach the target number. 8 out of 10 cats is a separate show which is brilliant, and this is the very popular crossover they do... hope this helps.

Watch the "8 out of 10 Cats does Deal or no Deal". It was a One-off show that they did in the early season of the amalgamation. It's kinda long but has some great moments. 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown is like combining Jeopardy and Hollywood Squares. *Joe Wilkinson is meant to be Rachel Riley's assistant but he's terrible at his job. (She doesn't normally have an assistant on regular COUNTDOWN) Joe is... special.

Countdown is a show thats kinda like Scrabble, except you ask for a vowel or consonants. After you're done, you try and make the biggest word you can to gain the most points. 8 out of 10 cats does Countdown is a comedy show which uses the same girl from Countdown who picks the letters for you. The aim is the same as Countdown, except the show is a comedy show like Mock the Week, Have I got News for you, and Celebrity Juice. If you get chance to watch any of these, you should, because they are brilliant.

Letters round: pick the letters and try to get the longest word. Numbers round: pick numbers , and you are given a random sum, which you have to make from the numbers you picked. Then the most points win.

This is a comedy version of the actual original show called "count down" which is a daily afternoon show the UK. This comedy spin off is really good fun and it's once a week. There is also another funny/silly show called "celebrity Juice", which you may wanna check out.

It’s based on a serious quiz show called countdown, which does anagrams and maths problems. But this is the same thing done with comedians instead of scholars. The host for years was Richard whitely, but after he died it didn’t maintain its popularity and ended.

Basically they get given 9 letters, their choice of consonants or vowels and its who makes the largest word. Then they choose numbers, a large number comes up and they have to use those numbers to get as close to the large number on the board

It's basically random maths quizzes and individual Scrabble.

The two women are from the Countdown a numbers and words quiz, which is quite hard. The others are from 8 out 10 cats, which is comedy quiz where all the contestants are professional comedians. You need to watch the two programs separately and then you will see why this is car crash TV.

I know you are starting to enjoy British comedy stuff try watching “Would I lie to you” it’s a programme where comedians are given a card to read for the first time. It could be a truth about their past or a lie. But they have to convince the other team it’s a truth. It’s hilarious. My suggestion would be WILTY rent a horse. Or WILTY Bob Mortimer

8 out of ten cats do countdown starts by introducing everyone and the item they brought in. Then you go onto the words and number puzzles. The words problems are one team selects vowels and consonants at random and points are given based on word length. The numbers one team select random numbers then a random answer is selected. They must then use the numbers given to reach the selected number. Closest gets points. Then there’s random comedy pits thrown in during the game.

Countdown consists of 3 games: Letters, Numbers & the countdown conundrum. The letters game consists of contestants choosing a mix of 9 letters (vowels and consonants) , they have to try and find the longest word they can in 30 seconds. The person with the longest word wins and their word score (the number of letters they used) is added to their Points Total. The numbers game is similar, contestants pick a mixture of high numbers and low numbers. The number generator spits out a random number which the players must try to either solve or get the closest to in 30 seconds. You can only use each number once in their solutions. Winner is the person who solves or gets closest to the target number. It is possible for the target number to be unsolvable. The numbers and letters rounds alternate along with the contestant who gets the power of choice. Finally the end of the game is the Countdown Conundrum, both contestants try to solve the final word jumble which forms a 9 letter word. They have up to 30 seconds but they can buzz in at any time to solve. Should a contestant get it wrong the clock will continue and the person will be frozen out of the round until the other contestant guesses or the clock runs out. Person with the most points at the end wins. Extra note: Normal countdown is played with 2 individual contestants whilst 8 out of 10 cats is a team game with teams of 2.

Countdown has 2 sections. In one, the contestants are given 9 random letters but one of the players can choose which of those letters are vowels and which are consonants (which contestant gets to choose changes each round). They must then make the longest word they can using only those letters (individual letters may be used only once) within 30 seconds. The words must be in the dictionary or they don't count. The second section is the maths one. The contestants are given 6 random numbers and a target number. The goal is to reach the target number using the other numbers via multiplication, division, addition and subtraction (each number may be used only once) within 30 seconds. Edit: There is also a brain teaser right before the ad break where they show an anagram on-screen and provide a clue to the original word. The audience at home then have the length of the ad break (around 5 minutes) to figure out what the original word was. When the ad break ends, they reveal the word.

The original '8 out of 10 Cats' was an averagely funny comedy quiz show with regular guests. The producer thought it would be fun to temporarily switch the format of their gameshow over to the Countdown format which had up until that time been a rather po-faced letters and numbers daytime show which had been running for so long on the same channel it had become a national institution. They just basically transferred the whole thing into the Countdown studio. Countdown contestants are usually very clever, so much of the comedy comes from watching these guys trying to do Maths and English. It took off and the channel started commissioning whole series.
