I love whelks. They're petty hard to find. And yes they're chewy. In the 1970's it was regular to have a bloke visit the local pubs with a basket full of cockles, mussels, prawns, periwinkles, whelks and crab meat. I don't think they do it these days. I miss those days.

They’re a very, very traditional British food that you’d get at the seaside but have probably gone out of fashion in recent decades. (Or maybe hipsters are eating them again.
