The thing with the "glory hole" joke is the absolute *perfect* timing, and that you can see, by the look on his face, that Jimmy added that line just as he was saying it. But context is important too, and knowing how prim, proper and what a truely lovely person Susie is; saying all these things about her which are so different from the actual person, make the jokes even funnier
@MrMartinSchou4 жыл бұрын
It gets better - she's said that she didn't know that a glory hole is also a sex term. She knew it as a place, such as a cupboard, for storing odds and ends. She's told a few anecdotes on the show, about how she's slow to catch the innuendos.

@MrMartinSchou4 жыл бұрын
@@rick_fortune Yeah, but ever since Susie told them (the comedians on the show) she felt left out, because Jimmy wasn't roasting her at the start of the show, the go-to gag for Susie has been that she's a sex-fiend, and it just fit perfectly with that one. I suspect it was something he came up with on the spot rather than having prepared before the show, but I'd have to ask him to be certain (on Twitter, I don't know the man personally).

8 out of 10 cats does countdown is far more comical when you watch an actual episode, the jokes usually run through a show and reference the guests and hosts - I don't think compilations of this show are funny to people who don't really know about the regular comedians who appear on it or the original daytime tv version. British panel shows like 'Mock the Week' or 'Would I lie to you' work as compilations because the jokes are relevant to a topic so anyone who watches the clip already has that reference point. Countdown is at its core - a numbers and words gameshow - with the occassional insult and funny scene - which only are funny if you know the show. PS - Love your reactions video! You guys are my lockdown discovery!

The context for the Gloryhole joke is that earlier in the episode Suzy mentioned thaat she had no idea that a glory hole was a sexual term. Can't remember exactly what she said about but mentioned about looking into gloryholes as in 'looking into the meaning of the word gloryhole'. So Jimmy expertly brought it baack up later in the show and broke everyone.

When Rachel comes back at Jimmy with “Saves on VAT Jimmy you’d know all about” He got slammed by the UK public and Government for tax avoidance (tax avoidance is 100% legal) there is an ongoing back and forth as to whether Jimmy Car’s tax avoidance is morally wrong or not but none the less it has still left a mark on his reputation which Rachel cleverly uses here and makes her comeback top notch👌🏻
@karlmortoniv29514 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Carr hosted an episode of regular “8 out of 10 Cats” right after that story broke and everyone on the show flayed him alive for the tax thing - it’s well worth watching, if you can find it. Sean Lock was the most brutal, and seemed honestly offended by what Jimmy did. To his credit, Jimmy took it all right on the chin with exceptional good humor. Amazing to watch. Since then everyone takes any opportunity that comes along to zing him about it and his reaction is usually just like you see here. He slings insults like they’re going out of style, but he can take them just as gracefully.

Most of the jokes and insults were focused on the person, their career and where they live, so as somebody who's not familiar with them it's probably not going to be very funny. For example most American's probably don't know that somebody from Newcastle is known as a Geordie, and the insults that follow. Also probably haven't heard the term 'dogging' before. Don't know about Jimmy's tax evasion scandal. They mock John Richardson for his OCD and used to mock him for not having a girlfriend because of his awkwardness, but since he is now finally married they still mock him for things like being unable to fulfil her. I think of the alternative being somebody from the UK watching the show "The Green Room" where a bunch of American comedians like With Bill Burr, Russell Peters, Colin Quinn, Caroline Rhea, Lizz Winstead, and host Paul Provenza etc. all sit together. We can laugh at the obvious roasts and jokes, and most of us are aware of bigger names like Bill Burr, but most of the personal things usually go over our heads.

Brilliant, thanks so much for checking this show out. As others have suggested, please check out Joe Wilkinson's appearances on this show. Yes, dogging is just sex in public usually with strangers. There's certain locations, usually forest and countryside car parks where people go at night and see what they can get upto. The public and Police take a very dim view of it, but as they keep themselves to themselves they mostly get away with it. We accidentally went to a dogging site in the countryside to smoke weed, we had no idea, there were allsorts of weirdos creeping about looking around assuming there was action happening in the car. That was before dogging was a word and we left and figured it out later as it seemed pretty absurd at the time. How things change.

Don't forget that there is dogging etiquette, in that there are signals to others as to how much interaction is allowed, for example if a window is down means one thing (usually they want you to reach in and touch, but no more), if the door is open another 'participant' my be desired. All of this is usually instigated by the flashing of the headlights or hazards and it is usually accepted that if no initial signal is made then they want to be left alone. FYI it was my friend Stan Collymore that told me all about this..... 🤥
