I think DT deep down knows he lost this debate. Ozil does not show up in big games and only plays well when the team plays well which is why against BATE, Ozil would not have been particularly effective if we are looking at past times. Under Wenger Ozil would have been better suited because Wenger loved him as a player and Ozil benefitted somewhat under his system, but even then struggled in tight spaces and often found himself in wide positions rather than being effective in the middle. However, regardless of how much distance he covers during a game, his defensive application is poor. So when Unai comes with a system where athleticism is important, Ozil struggles because he doesn't want to press. When Ozil plays, our press has been beaten because he is slow/late on his part, and when pressing as a team, timing is everything. So although everyone boasts on his assists and his numbers (and he has had some great games), but when you look at the functionality of someone like David Silva, Silva is more effective, adaptable, does what has been asked of him from his manager. Silva originally an advanced playmaker operating through the middle or on the left, not responsible for defensive contributions is now a CM who works hard defensively, presses the ball and still dictates play against small and big sides. Ozil has so far failed to adapt and although I think at times we could adapt our tactics to involve him against some of the smaller sides, I also think that we can't afford to build our team around a player that is 31, past his prime, doesn't lead, isn't effective vs big clubs. Yes we can be more creative but I think this can be done by playing a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 rather than playing 5 at the back and sacrificing a forward player for a defender. Yes defensively we have not been strong but then have Torreira sit like Kante before this season so that the defence, even playing 4 at the back has that extra protection. We could also utilize Elneny who is better defensively in my opinion than Xhaka. Letting Cazorla go was a massive mistake also. But at the end of the day, we do not have a solid system/style of play, and without that consistency by any player will always be hard to come by because tactics and formation change week in week out. Man city, Liverpool, United, Spurs all have their styles of play and will adapt that style of play depending on opposition. All those clubs have been more consistent that us.
