Bobby Fischer is absent from the Queen's Gambit because Beth's story was partially inspired by his story. Namely the part where an American comes to the Soviet-dominated world of chess and "beats the Russians at their own game". If I recall correctly, there were several reports of Tal purposefully neglecting to hit his timer on multiple occasions when he saw his opponent was low on time. This wasn't done just because she is a she but Tal respected them as players and wanted the game to go on instead of winning on a technicality, especially when he didn't get to play against them very often. It wasn't meant to be disrespectful or chauvinistic. This is conjecture, but I would assume the reason he didn't do this with people like Bobby or Rashid was because he played them enough to trust them to do well under time pressure.

Nope it means into a hell of confusion and chaos where the way out is only enough for one, which also means he hated draws. The newer GMs like Hikaru analyze the game and say that's a mistake and opponent was dumb to fall for that or not punish that. But the thing is he could smell draws from mile away and avoided them. It's like Tal brought a knife to gunfight but due to that deep dark forest of confusion the opponent even having a gun thought that he had no chance against Tal. And this is the non-peak Tal, Tal was at his peak against Botvinnik where he shows controlled best move chess that even engines have difficulty understanding it. Also among all players Bobby Fischer respected the most was Tal and it can clearly be seen Tal never really tryhard on any of his games. He won against peak Kasparov, 1 months before his death.

That's why it's so puzzling to me that they would use her real name but deliberately belittle her accomplishments. For millions of people who just watched the series, this is now the one "fact" they know about Nona Gaprindashvili, that she was "Russian" and had never played men, with the implication that she wouldn't have been a match against them like the fictional Beth Harmon was. A spontaneous mistake is different from a scripted show, where you have time to research the script. That's why you use fake people and fake names, if you don't want to do any research, or if you don't want to get sued. If you use real names and real people, you need to get the facts right *unless* you've gotten permission from those people. Example: Bohemian Rhapsody is wildly inaccurate in many aspects...but the entire band had signed off on the movie, so no big deal. But with Queen's Gambit, you had an entirely fake story, then the moviemakers throw shade at an *actual person* by factually diminishing their accomplishments to make their fake character look better. Further, the movie makers can't blame the book, because they changed the text...to make the real player look worse. To compound things, Netfix callously disregarded the truth once it was brought to their attention when a fix was very easy and inexpensive: they could have put a disclaimer on all future viewings, or simply re-recorded one line of dialogue at a cost of a few thousand dollars. Instead, they said "screw you, we're Netflix, we're not changing it," thus earning a lawsuit.

She definitely should go on with the lawsuit. This is the trend in hollywood, to belittle actual women and at the same time act as "saviours, protectors and promoters of women" when their actual goal always is money. Its a shame, that no one in the chess community caught on to this who reviewed the Queen's Gambit series, no one picked it up!!! Not you, magnus, hikaru, nigel short, chess24 commentators who talked about it during every game, NO ONE. Hikaru I remember had a whole episode dedicated to just some stupid comment made by Nigel Short about Beth Harmon (who is a freaking fictional character). Meanwhile the actual series had such a disparaging comment deliberately made about an actual woman that too such an iconic one, and again, no one picked it up. I am not shaming anyone or anything, just pointing out that an 80 year old had to file a lawsuit herself to get everyone in the community to notice it. Imagine if she was no longer with us, we would have never know. And the scumminess of the people at NETFLIX to deliberately put this comment BY CHANGING IT FROM THE ORIGINAL and use her REAL name and then to say they will "vigorously defend the case" just shows proves my point. They could have easily just used another name or even a similar sounding name (since the entire freaking series is fictional) like the japanese do with their football games, but they choose not to because they think they are too big for someone to sue. I hope it get resolved soon in here favor since she is really old and that everyone knows about her and her achievements and contributions to chess and women in chess.

I agree with your points about Netflix, but shaming today's players they don't know story of top 15 national player from half a century ago is a bit of exaggeration. Surely, you can expect they know some games from top international tournaments of that period, but everything more is just a bonus. I bet Karpov would pick it up, but I believe he is not much into TV series, nor has much media exposure nowadays.

That’s why I think (from the perspective of someone who hasn’t watched the show) that this was deliberately put in by the writers to make the announcer seem sexist, to establish his character and that the room Beth is playing in is full of sexist people, thus upping the challenge and therefore the suspense. If the audience noticed what the above reply-er did, then they would know the statement is false, and thus Nona’s reputation is not being damaged. But that’s just a hypothesis that I can’t confirm or deny because I haven’t watched the show. (And side note: all information I have about the show is from anonymous internet users. Not entirely credible sources. So you and I should take all this information with a grain of salt.)

In the time period represented, Georgia was part of the Soviet Union, thus all under the banner of Russia and spoken of that way in the west. Just like Ukraine, the 'Stans, the Baltics etc. It would be historically inaccurate to describe them as anything other than 'Russian' for the time period, the Cold War. In a modern setting, it would obvious be different as all these regions are now independent nations.

To be fair they didnt call her russian exactly they said that in the soviet union exist other strong women players as well like nona(of course that sounds like they imply she is russian but its kinda true because back then it was the soviet union so it's not so easy to tell what the right way to address her would have been ) and since she played in many soviet union's championships(and won) and in chess olympiads as part of the soviet union's team its kinda complicated...but it's true that saying she never played men is an insult to her and i can understand where she is coming from.

She said that her opponent played that exact line against some other player before and it was novelty at that time, that game ended in a draw and after the game both tarjan and his opponent (both GM-s) agreed that position was a draw. Nona reached exact same position in the game against Tarjan and she found new idea over the board and eventually won amazing game. She sad that this tournament was one of the best in her career. Since she is mentionned by name in the series I can understand why she would be pissed off by the comment saying that she has never faced men (not sure if the slight is worth 5 millions, but why not). Perhaps it would have been better not to mention her at all. In this fictional version of chess, the main character has two hats, so to speak: first american to challenge the russians (and for that reason, Bobby Fisher, one of the few chess players along with kasparov famous enough to be known even by non players, must be erased), and first woman to challenge a game dominated by men (which could justify Nona Gaprindashvili being left out for the sake of the story.) I loved the series and I've got nothing against fictious stories set in realistic worlds (this is art, after all), but when you start naming names you have certain responsabilities.

Fischer denied making that remark about women. I was interested in this quote so did some research: "Only one problem with this news report: From page 158 of A Legend on the Road by John Donaldson (Milford, 2005): Fischer denied making the remark. The remark was an invention from Ralph Ginzburg's own perversity and was later sued by Barry Goldwater, which landed Ginzburg in court and Goldwater successfully collecting thousands USD in defamatory libel-damages." It was most likely a set up by the soviets who saw teenage Fischer as a threat. After that remark was printed, they wanted to possibly embarrass him by challenging him to play the strongest Russian female player

There is zero obstacles to women competing in top tournaments, or a world championship level. The problem is that there are no women that are good enough in chess to compete with top players. Unlike in other sports there are no gender limits in chess, just sheer competition
@abdullahimran46243 жыл бұрын
im sure eventually it will. The reason men seem to have an advantage is that chess was a 'mans game' for millennia now and has only recently been played by women. To get incredible women in chess you would need many many times more women to even play chess in the first place. Despite what this comment section is saying there is nothing inferior about the mind of women. this imbalance is most likely a result of sample size. When more and more women start playing chess, we will find more and more amazing chess players who happen to be women.

Gaprindashvili is right to remind the US film industry that history matters, reality and truth matter, and it's time they stopped overwriting history to give Americans the delusion that they are always the good guys.
