This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

As I understand it, and correct me if I'm wrong, players playing a fast game these days might get a certain amount of time to play the whole match (say ten minutes,) plus an 'increment,' of a certain number of seconds after each turn. Clearly the increment is cumulative. How about having a certain amount of time for the whole match, plus some sort of increment that is not cumulative (sort of like 'time control,' again, if I'm understanding that correctly,) but every turn, not just after, say, turn 40. That way Morphy and Paulsen could have a match of, say, an hour, but with a non-cumulative increment of, say, half an hour each turn. That way if they had a particularly tricky position to consider, they could maybe take over an hour on that turn - but they'd know, in their own minds, that on most turns they wouldn't want to take over about 30-35 minutes. What do you guys think?

See Moar I know you’re trying to help and I’m also not trying to be an ass, but I find it hard to believe the person doesn’t already know auto captions are available, they’re probably just dead frustrated with the captions being so inaccurate. I use captions sometimes myself and I can forgive the errors because I can hear what is being said, so it’s easy for me to keep up, but I imagine that would be hell for a deaf person to wonder why the captions might say “we’ll come back to an otter exiting game”

Were there really that many players at hand capable of giving these guys challenge enough that they could learn anything from playing them?

White did appear stronger being he had the Rook but very intricate position with the pieces I was looking at that Be5 move but of course Qd1+ as well Great Game Thanks Agadmator

Funny how Morphy's head looks photoshopped to the body on his profile photo. Like it's floating over the photo. But now we have Antonio wearing a pitch black sweater, and his own head looks like it's floating in the space. E.g. at 0:51, but really most of the video

I imagine Morphy was being cocky not taking that knight.

I think Morphy could go with knight on f3 with attack on queen while checking king.Just an opinion.

How was time control decided back then, did both players just have as much time as they wanted?

You got Morphys sneaky idea at 2:15 wrong. Instead of moving the knight to b3 Morphy would surely have moved it to f3 with check. Paulsen would have been forced to take the knight with the pawn. Then Morphy would have picked up the white queen, again with check. He could pick up the bishop afterwards. Etc.

Hashrima Senju The white Queen covers both e2 and f3 squares so the Queen would just capture it.

Morphy must have temporarily lost the equivalent of 200 Elo in some games against Paulsen because of so many tanks by Paulsen. I bet Paulsen used at least 80% of the time spent to play this match.
