@11:35 IMHO What if Magnus had given check with rook on H5. The only way for David to save his Rook would have been to put Knight in between. Magnus could have taken the Knight with the pawn. David would have the option to take either take Magnus' Bishop or lose another pawn. Ultimately, Magnus would have been up a pawn, with David only relying on his lone rook.

It will be theoretical draw. As black will have rook & pawn vs rook... at this level they would know how to draw it. So if you would try to win you have to save the bishop first and see if you can take advantage of the extra pawn.

Hello chess friends. Please help me understand. Why not? I know white can block with Ng5 with check, but the pawn can capture so it seems black is coming ahead a piece no matter what

Can anyone explain why Rxa5 at 11:34 is not a blunder for white? The black rook can x-ray the king. Even if white defends with Nf5, gxf5 and whatever happens black would probably be up a piece after the bishop moves.
@ramongreenday213 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing, but after rook h5 I think that they would play knight f5, pawn takes, rook takes bishop on a4, pawn takes e4 check, king takes e4; which would leave Magnus up a pawn but, I believe, in a drawn position.
@ShimizuSolace3 жыл бұрын
@@ramongreenday21 But if King takes on e4 after those exchanges the white rook would be on a4 which if Kxa4 will have the black rook x-ray the king and take the rook. I think at most it'll be: Rxa5 Rh5+ Nf5 gxf5 Rxa4 gxe4+ After that the king moves but not taking on e4 cause that would lose the white rook. It'd be a king + rook vs king, rook, and pawn which I believe can convert into a win, but it might be a bit drawish if the kings are close and rooks are traded early.
@ramongreenday213 жыл бұрын
@@ShimizuSolace Yeah, you're definitely right, the king can't take on e4, my bad. But I believe the rook can, and that would be a draw because the king can get to the corner and all that is left is a flank pawn, regardless of rooks being traded or not.

Gawd. Most of us amateurs worry about losing material, getting checkmated out of nowhere and missing such things and/or making mistakes when we try to calculate 3-4 moves ahead (at most). Realising how on championship level players also worry about positions that result in a draw, although at first prompted a young bull reaction out of me, like "someone has to win-this should be disallowed-change chess rules so that fewer draws can happen", thinking about it more, made me appreciate both the intricacies of the game, the players, and the game too, for a draw is very much a part of it. I would observe that it does make a difference on how its drawn, i.e. its different if a player reaches out a hand and the other accepts it, than for example when sometimes engines, trying to find the best move for each side, end up in 3-fold repeition of position(? definition of draw in chess iirc). Indeed it is the calling of the chess player to mind both space and the limitations and capabilities of the pieces, and avoid such draws, as this type of draws are not much different than checkmate either, which is also defined from the available space on the board and the limitations and capabilities of the pieces. Thank you Agadmator. Well done to the young gun and always a pleasure to watch Magnus play (to me at least - not that I could appreciate the depth of such a game but I believe not all was lost to me, as I am sure other players better than myself found and will find this game both educational and enjoyable)

AT 11:35 what's wrong with Rh5 check for black?
@iammilind3 жыл бұрын
There is an interesting line for black at 11:36. Instead of bishop moving away, give a check with black rook on h5. This threatens white rook, which is being in the same row of the king. So only way is to defend with the black knight on f5. Now black can defend its bishop by further attacking the knight, by placing it on d7. The best trade for white will be to safeguard its rook by attacking the black bishop on a7. This will further pin the black king.

5:34 If Ba3 then after ...Nf2 white loses the exchange, black should get an advantage?
@courtlandFDouglas3 жыл бұрын
@2:58, is there a reason you have to capture with the Queen? Couldn't he capture with the bishop, which would prevent the White Queen from capturing, due to Black Queen being able to re-capture without penalty??

Queston: At 10:25 the bishop goes from E6 to G8. Why did Carlsen do that? I wouldve placed him at C4 creating pressure on the knight and tower.

Hey I’m a complete amateur but I can’t understand for the life of me why black didn’t go rook to h5 at 11:35 can someone explain

Hi Antonio (and anyone else who may know) - what happens when you say ‘sorry about that?’ I never notice any problem but its like he adjusts a level on something? Been wondering for ages 😄

Anton pushes the a pawn to stop the two pawns from advancing (you can't take woth the bishop becaise of rook a1 with a skewer and you're lost), magnus takes the open file with his rook and Anton blocks it woth his knight to make that rook weaker

I like your coverage of this game. It doesn't matter to me if it's a decisive game, the long, grinding games (and videos ;)) are good too.

19:33 what if instead of g2, h4? Then kf4, g2, nxg2, kxg2, kg4, h3 and the pawn is defended by the king on g2 and will queen.
@imanhaiqal233 жыл бұрын
Kg5 is better than Kf4 . Than after all that the white king can capture the h4 pawn

At 11:34...what if black plays Rh4+? Is white loosing a Rook?
@multiibrahim46363 жыл бұрын
19:34 why did you assume that he would move the pawn forward after the night moves to e1 ? He could simply move the other pawn forward and then get the upgraded queen when the time comes !!

5:40 wouldn't this move blunder a rook/the exchange? If not how would he save the rook after knight to f2?
@PPanos19683 жыл бұрын
If Nf2 then BxN, black must recapture, then we have the Rook trade, and finally the Rook in h1 can move, for example to f1 and chasing the Night away. There will be some Pawn trades, and the dust will settle down.

At 11:37, why doesn't black play Rook to H5 instead of bishop to D1? It looks like black wins a rook?
@keizan51323 жыл бұрын
2:10 I can tell you for sure this was all prepared. One of his trainers is a broadcaster in chess24 en español and was talking about this preparation. It's only by Magnus playing d5 that they got out of what they had prepared.
