Would be interesting to see what Caruana had prepared if MVL had "correctly" captured with the C pawn. Even a minute or two on that continuation would have been good.
@tomatoisnotafruit56703 жыл бұрын
It took Caruana 40 minutes to find the best move after the "incorrect" pawn capture, implying Caruana didn't have this line prepared and didn't know that move was a blunder right away, otherwise he'd immediately move the pawn up instead of analyzing for half an hour to find the best reply.

@@tomatoisnotafruit5670 Masters often say that when an opponent plays a bad move they know it's a bad move because of their preparation, but sometimes it happens that they only know the engine evaluation and not the refutation, so he has to find the winning move otb (but he knows it's there). I know this is a bit dubious, but so much hype has been built up around the Tata Steel Masters 2021(and for very good reasons) that people(and indeed this channel, apparently) seem to have forgotten that the TCEC Season 20 Superfinal is going on at around the same time. Well, I've been following it on Chess.com(in part because of Agadmator's videos on the 'eternal' rivalry of Stockfish and Leela Chess Zero), and it's only after game 34 - a third of the 100-game match - that a clear lead after two games of the same predetermined position was reached(game 33 was that decisive one!). So I'm suggesting, if possible, that he covers that game 33 - probably not right now because of all the great games of the Tata Steel Masters 2021 - but at a close later date. Yes, of course, as I've gone over it, 2/3 of the game was basically shuffling pieces around and that's not something Agadmator wanted to make a video about in past superfinals; but after all, it's the first turning point after a long time, and it's interesting to see how these computers converted advantageous but nearly deadlock positions into a victory(Also, looking at the trajectory that the games after that have been going, I believed that there will only be a few game-changers like game 33, so there won't be actually that many choices).

Just to update, from the time I made the previous comment, game 49 - halfway from 100 games - was another decisive one, so I guess, 4 games max?(Still a lot of fiddling in that game, but unlike game 33, there's a tactic that shines above all else).

I’m a big MVL fan given his performance in the candidates. It’s interesting that a recurring theme is to see him lose in lines where he’s supposedly an expert. @nadem70793 жыл бұрын
I assume by Qh5 you mean Qb6? If nothing else black can always play f6, Kf7, his pieces have decent coordination and his position is reasonably solid. Compare this to the position after e6 when black’s queen is stuck on the queenside and his dark squared bishop has no squares beyond e7. The engine evaluation is only marginally relevant - it just tells you “this position is almost equal if you make all the right moves”, which says nothing about how difficult a position will actually be for a human player to defend.

After this game I got the idea that there should be a (beginners) guide on what the use of a pawn is depending on its rank. I dont know if this exists already but heres my take (for white): rank 1: Oops, you set up the board wrong. rank 2: This is the starting rank of the pawns. The pawns guarding your king usually stay here (atleast for quite some time). rank 3: This is still a defensive rank. You put the pawns here to help develop your pieces (i.e. fianchetto), take away squares from the opponents pieces, make a breathing space for your king or prepare another pawn push. rank 4: This is quite a nice rank for the pawn already. The pawn creates outposts for your pieces and gives you room to develop. For the opponent its time to consider attacking, exchanging, undermining or blocking the pawn to not allow it to get to... rank 5: On this rank the pawn gains you a space advantage and restrains your opponents development. The opponent should strongly consider to not let the pawn advance further (as seen in the game). rank 6: Here the pawn can help in attacking the king and severely restrains your opponents mobility. Last chance to exchange pawn for pawn (see rank1+2). rank 7: Code red. All forces return to base! This pawn has to be stopped or captured asap tying down the opponents pieces even further and often allows some tactics (sacrificing a piece, giving a check etc.). rank 8: This is where the magic happens. Congratulations your pawn is not a pawn anymore. I guess the takeaway is that a pawn gains value and importance with each rank unless it can be stopped or captured. Anyway thanks agad for your dedication and consistent coverage.
