Fourteen of the world's top players, including the World Champion, competed in a round robin format that was the strongest tournament in the world at that time. The participants were (in order of ELO): Garry Kasparov (2800), Anatoli Karpov (2725), Boris Gelfand (2700), Vassily Ivanchuk (2695), Mikhail Gurevich (2650), Jaan Ehlvest (2650), Valery Salov (2645), Alexander Beliavsky (2640), Gata Kamsky (2640), Vishwanathan Anand (2635), Jan Timman (2630), Jonathan Speelman (2610), Artur Yusupov (2605), and Ljubomir Ljubojevic (2595). It was a second phenomenal victory for Ivanchuk who finished clear first with an impressive 9.5/13, even winning his head to head match with second place and world champion, Kasparov.

My vote goes to Jerry, aka ChessNetwork. Second place is probably John Bartholomew. Those guys are actual chess masters; Agadmator is an A-player. Agadmator doesn't know as much about the game, so he can't make as informed a commentary. Low-rated players can still get something out of it though, which is why Agad has so many subscribers.

This is the game I come back to the most. It is just beautiful how Ivanchuk literally dismantles Kasparov and was so confident in his ability that he was willing to sacrifice two knights knowing he'd imprison the bishops later. I genuinely think Linares 1991 is the most impressive chest performance in history. Ivanchuk DUSTED the field and this was probably the strongest field to ever play in a tournament.

My favorite game is the one where a side's possibilities are gradually, ineluctably choked off, where there is very little loss of material, and where black wins, since white generally has a slight advantage out of the gate. Exactly , in 1990 (when this was played)it was sensational . For a start Ivanchuck won the the strongest Tournament (Linares) and beat the two K's in the process, (as you can see he did not just beat Kasparow) . After this it was expected for Ivanchuck to be the next challenger for the World Championship (sadly it was not to be , but in 1990-92 he must have been the best player in the World)

Ivanchuk is always my favorite chess player. Even in the candidate tournament in 2013 I was strangely rooting for him. Although seems impossible, I still want to see a miracle of seeing him becoming the world champion. It would validate his legacy.

Wow. This is incredible. I didn't know about Vassily until now. He is absolutely smashing Kasparov. If I didn't know who the players were I would suspect white is a grandmaster and black is ranked below 2k elo. Each move is tightening the noose in such a fashion as to give Kasparov no options and he did it from the very beginning by exchanging bishops for the knights. Then to learn that Ivanchuck beat Magnus back to back 5 years ago is just incredible. Thanks Agad!

Ivanchuk’s play in this game reminds me of something Kafka said about writing, which he said was like a fox tiptoeing across a frozen lake. Everywhere in this ‘ opposition supression mode’ there are about twenty disastrous moves that can be made, and only one brilliant one, but nevertheless Ivanchuk doesn’t put a foot wrong. When you see games of this quality, it’s really surprising that Ivanchuk has never been World Champion himself.

Agadmator.....sorry to be here this late...You have reinvented the love and passion for chess and it's astonishing! I have been watching ur videos and get inspired everyday ...Chess can be boring if u let it eat ur insecurities...but when u can find ur game and adventure out of it; it become an addiction...and THANK YOU for that. Vassily Ivanchuk is by far the most amazing adventurer in my opinion beside obviously Tal....I find him more Human and straightforward than any other GM's out there...It's been an wonderful game....best of luck for future uploads.

Caming back to this video four or five years later and having grown quite a bit as a chess player, I can appreciate this game even more today. It's almost like a magic trick, at some point Kasparov must have thought, "How did this happen?" Absolutely fantastic, it looks so awkward in the beginning and then suddenly all of black's pieces are trapped in a vice.
