Indeed rumor has that Magnus training in endgame is the stuff of legend. The rumor is that as soon as his father established that Magnus not only had uncommon aptitude for the game but his son was indeed serious about sacrificing towards the holy grail of chess, he packed the car and took his son to Gamvik, leaving his mother crying alone at the kitchen table (for she knew she might never see her son again) Once there, Magnus underwent endgame training by having to memorize appropriately presented endgame puzzles and solving them. This was done by showing him the position for 2 seconds and then dropping him tied upside down from the pier of Gamvik village into the cold water. Magnus then had to hold his breath and solve the puzzle. Once he had solved it, he tugged a rope, to get back up. If he was wrong, his father dropped him back in until he stopped moving and then pulled him up and revived him using a defibrillator. Then one day a strange thing happened. The fish in the water started helping Magnus out. It is not clear how this was done or how his father figured it out, but when he did he changed the venue by tying Magnus to a tree and releasing an angered reindeer straight at him. However Magnus made friends with the reindeer as well, and so then his father had to take drastic measures to ensure his son would be able to win without any help whatsoever, so he just defibrilated him to death anyway and revived him. If coming back to life did not help Magnus solve the puzzle, he was defibrillated to death and revived again until he did. It was not torture. Magnus could have said I quit anytime, and it all would be over. Another unconfirmed rumor, is that following the Magnus Nieman controversy, Hans was told part of this story. He hasn't swam in water since and is right terrified of bathtubs too.
