Nobody watches your channel to “just see the moves.” We watch for your extra trivia and commentary. Anyone could cover the moves, but you’re the reason we watch these videos! Forget the people who don’t like it, the extra stuff is the heart and soul of your channel, and nobody wishes to see it changed!

The craziest part for me is how Tal is seemingly hanging pieces left and right, with only his attacking initiative on the enemy King sparing him the loss of more material. He cleverly unwinds his hung pieces with tempo as he balances defending his own king while keeping the pressure on his opponent. Then when the smoke clears in the endgame he's up a meager pawn somehow, as if this was all precisely calculated to give him a slight, albeit winning, advantage.

The hapstance of the unlikely source, an unrelated recent movie, that Tal was both his own and his tutors achievement, and a record at that, and ofc any game with such a wild sacrifice is enough for anyone to fall in love afresh with chess.

I honestly think that Tal's medical problems were beyond what medical science had to offer at the time, and particularly in the Soviet Union. For example, I had ulcerative colitis in the 1970s. We now know it's an autoimmune disease, but at the time, nobody had even heard of autoimmune diseases. Nobody knew what caused UC. I asked, and the doctors would just shrug and say "maybe a virus." Now I'm really glad that science has progressed, and today's UC (and Crohn's) patients have options I never had, but I would take issue with anyone who said that the reason I haven't had a large intestine for 45+ years is because I wasn't taking care of myself. Not only did I not know what was really going on, but the new immunosuppresive drugs that target IBD hadn't been invented either. Your thoughts about Tal's brilliance are spot-on. He was a legend in so many ways. I once heard about this one time where he was picked up and thrown in the local drunk tank overnight in the middle of a tournament, after the first day's 40-move round. When they realized it was Tal they picked up, and they were Russian (i.e. all chess players), and his tournament status, the story goes that his very jailers stayed up all night with him, analyzing his position! This is what I call stone-cold hero stuff.

@tumunu

@@aronuchukwuezugo615 Well, Tal played before there were computers. He did what everybody did in his time. His main tactic was to move away from established lines quickly, and complicate the position, and look across the table and metaphorically say, "in the next five hours I'm going to crush you with my raw chess-playing skill" and he usually did, until his health problems got him. I'd also like to mention, since he was still around was I was younger, that Tal was beloved by the entire chess-playing world, not just in the Soviet Union. I'm sitting here in the USA and the Cold War is swirling around me, and everybody still loved Tal. Americans no exception.

This game reminds me of the games I play these days, where it starts with theory and then evolves into a complex middle game with amazing attack and defending ideas, the top engine moved being found again and again, followed by a win as a result of being a pawn up while having a better position. #suggestions: Smyslov vs Tal, 1964 USSR team championship. Tal demonstrated brilliancy in every aspect of the game. Tal neutralised opening idea of Smyslov. In the middle game, Tal sacrificed Queen for only a rook ( not even any minor piece), Smyslov gave back queen soon. Then came the endgame where Tal methodically converted bishop pawns vs knight pawns endgame. It would be a treat to everyone.

I think it was some 2-4 years ago, I only remember that Tal played a very strange opening in a fast game against someone and the guy said: "Of course you used it in a fast game. I'd like to see you try in a classical". And so, once they played again, Tal used that same strange opening and won the game as well. It was something in the queen's side. After a few moves in the opening, Carlsen made a move with his bishop to protect a piece, and from there Anand forced every move by pushing his pawn up the B or C file. The pawn could not be taken. It was an amazing game but when I search I can't find it.
