If you watch the whole game, hikaru does have a commentary that magnus play riskier moves on younger opponents just like to test them out or see his range or capacity versus them (you can refer to games like versus alireza). While playing with the usual old old top players like hikaru, magnus plays safe. I think he is more like checking pragg's range or capacity but is overwhelmed maybe understimated him too

That was Magnus' cardinal sin during the game...he neglected his king safety by not castling...hence, his king-side rook was totally dormant throughout the game! But the big problem is that Pragg never gave Magnus a chance to castle! So in essence, Magnus misplayed the opening from the get-go...or should I say, Pragg completely outplayed Magnus from the get go!

exactly. some people here are trying to justify that by saying Magnus wanted to play INTERESTING chess. But putting the king in firing line is not interesting but just a massive blunder. Absolutely spot on, i was shouting all the time through middle game, Magnus please castle and connect the rook. But who am I to order a divine presence in chess! Yet judging by how things backfired, I think it was crucial to put king into safety and get the pair of rooks active before tarrying to solve all those deep problem Pragg created in the middle of the board. Hopefully we see a Goat resurgence as there are still 7 games to go

Qb8+ by Pragg, Magnus plays any king move, and then Qb7+ wins the rook I think. Even if Magnus tries to block with Qe7, then Pragg trades queens and the rook is hanging.

The thing with Magnus is, he is always pushing the boundaries of opening theory, experimenting with younger players such as Pragg, Gukesh, Alireza and Nodirbek (usually when he is in the leading position in a tournament). This is the reason why some of them occasionally wins against Magnus but his consistency and grasp of the game is still unmatched. Pragg played a brilliant game but at the end of the tournament, Magnus will still be where we expect him to be, no doubt about it.

Fanboy there is no thing here , Magnus needed a win in this strong tournament as there is still two games with fabi and some hard pairings to follow .So he played for a win , he even talked during the game that he is happy is with the position and pragg was not so pleased with the position at the start , then Pragg played Genius moves one after another over the thboard and it was just like positional domination masterpiece !! . This will what happen. Magnus will try to be creative until round 5, doesn't matter if he is way down on the points with armageddon wins only. But he is calculative, and he will fall back to his plan B, and start playing the games where he knows he can win for sure, and pack all the wins like his previous tournament to Casablanca. I think what makes Agadmator the Best is he doesn’t ride the coat tails of any one player some Analysts can’t show other games besides Magnus I find it sickening it’s better to give credit where credit is due no matter who the player is if they deserve props
