in my opinion this sequence is and remains the GOAT feat of OTB chess calculation. there are some other really amazing gems of pure calculation in Alekhine's game history, especially his blind-fold simul game (as black) with Gonsiorovsky in 1916

Games like this make me think a lot of the older elite GMs were much stronger than the ones today that have the benefit of engines and computers. This is all pure calculation and all over the board, no correspondence.

@@davidagbi4550 It's possible - players today for sure have a lot more knowledge and understanding about positions, due to sheer passage of time, analysis, and accumulation of knowledge across generations, but in terms of pure calculation or seeing lines, maybe the masters of old were on par with the modern ones (or sometimes better?) !

@@saumenroy8710 AA was a universal player who could easily hold his own against the best modern day players. Tal was more of a fierce and imaginative attacker. I’m sure both would be excellent today at their primes.

#suggestion If you are going to cover all of Alekhine's games in this tournament, consider making Alekhine saga. It's been almost a year since Morphy saga ended. Those players stories are definitely most magical of all of your content. Getting to know history of those champions and their times and seeing their path of improving and becoming the best is so exemplary.

That slo-mo rook move is amazing! At regular speed it appears to be going in a straight line. Not until you see it in slo-mo do you realize that Alekhine is moving his piece in a spiral fashion! Maybe that's why he was so good. :-)

Vast knowledge booster. I was reading the annotations of Alekhine and the reason why Reti didn't go for the 3 move repetition is because, Alekhine understood the fact that Reti considered at that time himself to be the better player, and because of that Reti played for the win, but got punished.

True. But Reti did not "invent" 1.Nf3; it was played by several players back in the 19th century.

Nf3 is more generic than the Reti. It is sometimes refered as the Zukertort opening. The Reti is more Nf3 d5 c4, and my prof consider a double fianchetto as white as a Reti whatever black answer

The Reti in not the only opening with 1 Nf3. If it is followed by 2 b3, it is the Nimzovitch. I tried my own version of this once and got terribly thrashed, so I’ll never have an opening called after me.

One of the greatest games of all time. First saw this one 45 years ago. I still marvel at the piece control here. I think it was Euwe that said of Alekhine, that he was like a puppet master. He pulls the strings and the marionettes dance to his bidding! So true, and quite magical. Anyone who drones on about modern Super GMs, as good as they are. Should look at this game, and many others of his. Asking the question. With no computers, and limited opening understanding (these guys and the next generation were inventing a lot of them around this time!).... How many of the top players of today could play such a game... These guys may have known less, but Thier talent is beyond dispute. Incidentally while Kasparov revered Alekhine's play ( obviously as it resembled his own). Fischer didn't care for him that much. As he thought the outrageous constructs too much for 99% of players and that Alekhine lacked the "light touch" of a Capablanca. That may be true. But it worked for Alekhine, and we should be glad it did. Else we would never get to see this game! Breathtaking. The best quote I ever saw on this one was a guy that said.... " This game is a marvelous one, and he who studies it and learns nothing about Chess... Should give up the game and try something else!".... Just a masterpiece for all the ages....

I saw this game about 25 years ago in a chess book. I was fascinated by the final +12-move combination and the bishop fork back then. About a year ago I remembered the game but couldnt find it because I didn’t remember Alekhine’s opponent. Thanks for sharing this. 🙂
