This was done live for the BBC in early 1970 and went out on Radoi 1, it was recorded on my reel to reel and started a life long love for Rory's playing, wow what a master of the guitar.

This live version is from the John Peel radio show. I know this because I used to record a lot from those shows onto a BSR reel to reel tape deck at 7.5 inch per second speed instead of the standard 3.75 to improve the sound quality and I swear I must have played this version a thousand times, with every note of the licks and riffs seared into my memory forever. What an amazing time that was. Peel rightly said that the recordings of bands on his show often sounded better than their ‘records’ did. I remember ‘Cream’ playing the best version of their instrumental ‘Steppin’ Out’ I ever heard, on Peel’s show. ‘Free’ was another band who were just phenomenal on those Peel shows. And most, if not all, of those bands played live in the studio. Testament to this is a memorable moment when Peel was caught out as Paul Kossoff ended the ‘Free’ song ‘I’m a Mover’’ with that blast of a final chord. As the mike was switched back to Peel, Paul Rodgers was heard in the background saying, ‘Do you want us to do it again?’ as Peel, snorting with a mouthful of food, replies, ‘No, you don’t have to do it again, sorry everyone I’m just eating a piece of cake.’ This was when ‘Free’ were at their ‘All Right Now’ hungry’ best, much like their classic ‘Free Live’ album. Zeppelin was another and many others, too. Like ‘Free’, Gallagher did Peel’s show more than once and the sound of his legendary, beat up ‘Strat’ never sounded better than it does on this track right here and was the main reason I had to get one myself - although I was seduced by the white body with a maple neck. Great, GREAT times - if only we could go back and do it all over again, I tell you, I’d be first in that fuckin’ queue!
