So...I suck. The one video a week dream lasted all of two videos on my initial attempt. Life things happened, along with future planned videos massively increasing in scope...this video is not the only thing I've been working on in the last 5 weeks! I've been filming things for the deep dive into specific topics along with working on the big 2019 CTWC video. I wish I could get these big projects out faster, unfortunately stuff like animation just takes so darn long. This video was a trial run on filming a live analysis of a match without a script or anything - I learned a lot about what to do better for next time! I'll really be trying to get the next videos up as soon as I can.

Finding your video on the Tetris 2018 World Championship is like that rare youtube video find that you get when you've been browsing but its the same old stuff and then you sit down for almost an hour watching an amazingly edited video. The system in place gives more credit to KZbinrs who pump out videos every day, but the best videos are the ones you put time in to make. Thank you, I can wait as long as you like.

When you said weekly videos I was like “OOF that’s going to be rough. I hope he doesn’t burn himself out.” Like the others said, I really don’t care if you have a consistent upload schedule. Make videos as you want. Make videos you’re proud of. I think you’ll find much more satisfaction in uploading (say) once a month a quality video than every week a mediocre video. I really like the analysis videos. While watching Greentea analysis stream - it was hard not to notice you also being there. Then i wondered what video you would do next, but did not ask - just to avoid any pressure. And now the next video appears - an analysis video of your own :D. Excellent! I didn't even realize I've been watching the last video for nearly an hour until you mentioned it. I know trying to do weekly videos would be good for you but I hope it's not at the expense of the quality of your videos. The last video is great, and so was the video before that explaining CWTC. oh right I mean, level 15 in modern games isn't _really_ that bad… like, it's faster than NES 29 in terms of raw gravity, but the fact that lock delay is 30 times longer makes it easy enough to survive at level 15 at the very top

15:50 S flat all the way right, like a delayed S-Spin. That way, if you get S-bursted, you can spire them horizontally instead of vertically, and you only burn 1 line.

Oh my, I totally remember watching this live! I even knew watching you then that there just seemed to be a lot of panic that first game, I knew that if I would qualify for something this big I would also probably have some poor decision making at the start. I really enjoyed this video and hopefully if they're easier for you to make then I would say keep on doing it, but I can't wait for that vlog on the 2019 CTWC and I'm not the only one. As well, great explanation on the double wide well tactic you use, it's something that I use so much and I feel is very much disregarded by new players! Thanks! Yeah I think video analysis of matches may be the way to go for regular uploads. Even the smaller special projects I start working on just get out of control too fast xD I'm sure you know. Can't imagine how much time it takes to edit the intros of your videos and looking forward to more content from you as well!

Nice analysis! I think another option for the S piece at 16:18 is to place it flat all the way to the right greentea style. It's a bit more agressive but it only requires one line burn.

David: I can totally relate to everything you explained in your analysis. I started to play kinda "seriously" 2 weeks ago and I'm having the same issues and I have the same "mindset" when playing like you here, but on level 15, instead of level 18. I can score tetrises on 15 as long I keep my stack kinda low, but once I hit the transition to 16, 17 and 18, I only try to clean up the board and survive as long as I can. The only way to improve is to keep practicing. Play, play and play more and your mind will start to process all the information to stack the pieces faster and faster. Keep your videos coming!

​@Manuel Salokangas That was very nice of you! I will check batfoy's videos! I'm a bit stuck right now in this level and I'm making the same mistakes over and over again. But I think that's expected... I have to continue playing and adding little things here and there to slowly improve my stacking and how fast I think for the placement of the pieces. I was at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo this year and 2019 has seen a BIG jump on the level of the players. Now we have like 20 people maxing out the game... Crazy!

Nice analysis! Your videos do a great job of explaining classic Tetris, but seeing how a new player vs. an experienced player match up really showcases the difficulty of this game. Watching the pros makes the game look way easier than it actually is for someone who's never played before, so watching an amateur gives me a newfound appreciation for what elite players are able to do.

Just take the pace you like for videos and go exploring whatever type of video you think you'll like making! Consider the work you've done for your "experience in tetris" video and others, you're probably a strong enough critic of yourself to put out good videos regardless of what you do, even if it might take time. So just you enjoy making videos! That aside, really loved this commentary on your game! As a non tetris player, games are usually too fast for me to even grasp what might be going on in a player's mind (let alone that I never learnt strategies) so it's really really interesting to watch! I can't remember if you mentioned your interaction with Kwaid in your other videos but I would have been curious to know his reaction after this match. Since you said you were a new player so he wasn't sure what to expect and played aggressively.

Ben Mullen said two things in the "Ecstasy of order" documentary: "The only way to practice for Tetris is to build for Tetris on Level 19. Of course this means you will top out a lot." The other thing he said: "You pracice the best when you are nearly dead in Tetris. If you aren't, are you really practicing?" (he was talking about how to train your decision making). Also, Jonas said something interesting. Bascially you have to allow yourself to get the board dirty. Put Z and S pieces where they don't really fit, and clean in up later. Because if you do that, you'll prevent building spirals. My only problem is that I don't have a NTSC NES at home (and no NTSC TV). I can only play NTSC Tetris on an emulator, which really sucks. The PS4 controllers are okay, but it's really not the same thing. Sometimes the input lag is very noticable. And PAL Tetris... well, I can play comfortable on level 15, but level 16 and above is too fast for me (it's comparable to level 19 speed in NTSC), and the PAL controls are very sloppy. It's incredibly hard to get the pieces in the right colum with DAS.

Thank you for the analysis, I really appreciate it. Now I realize how crazy hard it is to reach Joseph level. As a watcher, I can only shout "Oh no, why not put the piece there". But then, after watching this analysis, I realized that I know nothing about this game. I thought what makes you guys amazing is only because you carefully plan to get as many tetris as you can. But it turns out it's really hard to just execute those plans, even without thinking about where should the next piece be placed. Now I have more respect to all of you guys. And I'm glad that I found this community. Even though I only watch you guys, it already makes me happy. while you wait for the best time to get an actual nes cart, i recommend getting an emulator on computer, it's not the best but it still gets you warmed up to the speed/mechanics/strategies and such before getting the actual game.

I hope you can get better next time and see you in the future CTWC more. A question for the 6:41 problem, if you rotate the I piece counter clockwise (possibly pressing B), would it be in the correct position? I don't play classic Tetris, but this works for modern Tetris. If that doesn't work, then never mind. For 21:39, I think there's an alternative solution where you place the T piece flat, so at least the next J will have a better position. (Of course, nobody knows whether you'll get S/Z burst since this game is evil ;P)

I reccomend that you dont worry too much about the extra line for burning I know it's a good strat but having a jagged board is not that bad worrying too much about the extra line could cause miss drops and it's kind of a dependency if you think about it

Hypertappers usually never use DAS, at least I know that Joseph and Koryan are always hypertapping even at level 18, it can really give a big advantage when the stack gets high

meabe it's too late but what i think would be the best move in 24:26 was to put the J all the way to the right. I know that you woudn't burn any line with that move, but with that you have to burn 1 line after instead 2. Note: the move that i said could be the best with that T coming next ;) :P

I just started playing at level 18 on the regular. I can't get much anywhere right now. I was hoping for a gradual transition from 0 to 18 only to discover there is a massive speed jump between 15 and 16 and that 16's speed is the same as 18. You don't suck dude. You can survive at 18 for some time. I barely make it 30 seconds some times.

You're well qualified to analyze the games of other pros. It's well understood that they are bound by the speed and their skill as they're playing, given your ability (during review) to stop the time, you're not bound by either. Commentators/analysts just need to understand the game (limitations, rules, abilities), they don't necessarily have to be the best players themselves. (as true in all sports).

Yeah, that would have also worked! But that might have been very risky if I got droughted. Given how high up on the board I was and how early it was in the game, it probably wouldn't be the right amount of aggression to take. A super hypertapper could likely pull it off though!
