On this adventure we went to the "Agate Capital of the World", Moose Lake Minnesota. We targeted a river in the area and found some beauties.
I apologize for the poor audio while we were on the river. The new microphones gave us some trouble and didn't realize it until the trip was over. Hopefully we can provide a better experience with our next video.

I grew up in rural southwest Minnesota. As kids, our eyes were always scouting for rocks...pockets were never empty when we returned home. It's great to see kids out in nature.

Thanks for checking us out. The kids constantly bringing rocks home and asking what they are is what started all this.

Thanks. We’ve been back twice since and have done equally as well and better each time. Should have one more video out by thru weekend. We’re eyeing up some places farther north and east now.

@@10Agates nice, I just got out last weekend and filled a gallon ice cream bucket of keepers. Nothing huge but lots of good ones. Be on the lookout for fossilized coral, and Mary Allen jasper as well.

Than you! I’m so glad people are enjoying these. It’s funny. I live in an area completely consisting of nothing but powdery sand. We need to travel at least 45 minutes to find any sort of glacial till like we find in these rivers. Still, 45 minutes is relatively close.

3:10 I liked the clearish yellowy agate just to the bottom left of the giant dimpled monster. Here in western Washington we pick those up all the time. Occasionally you cut them open and they have banding.
@10Agates
@10Agates Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. That yellow one is almost certainly milky quarts stained yellow. There is so much of that around it can be difficult to find agates sometimes. We also see a lot of clear quarts with red inclusions that really fool the agate hunter.

Any wear in Central Minnesota is prime agate picking. I live near Little Falls, the gravel roads, farm fields, etc, are a pickers paradise.

Agreed. So many people are laser focused on the north shore and there are so many incredible agates to be found over 100 miles away.
@troylarsen2454
@troylarsen2454 Жыл бұрын
@10Agates for sure. The North shore gets so picked over fast. I was up in Grand Marais with some friends about a week ago. We were up there for a vacation, but also just to do some rock hounding, it wasn't all about agates. We found a few good agates, but it was the experience of it for us. A lot of new rock and agate hounds think they have to go up there to find agates. That's definitely not the case.

Nice finds. The color is like or is it Carnelian?
@10Agates
@10Agates Жыл бұрын
I’m not 100% sure what carnelian is but I do believe Lake Superior agates would qualify. Is carnelian just a red chalcedony?

Nice finds. Where did you get those long scoops from? Looks like the green buckets has a clear bottom to see through it in the water.
@10Agates
@10Agates Жыл бұрын
The scoops cam from Kingsley North and are called a “treasure scoop”. The buckets are home made and I’m having a hard time recommending anyone actually make them. The bucket and plexiglass are extremely difficult materials to bond to. The adhesive I had to use was $70. If you google “clear bottom bucket” you’ll find some for sale online. Not sure about the quality but it would be cheaper than how I did it.

Nice! Thank you! Which river??😮
@10Agates
@10Agates Жыл бұрын
I'd prefer not to share the river since there doesn't seem to be a lot of access points. There are a lot of rivers across central MN that I've had great luck on. A good tip would be to consider floating down some of these rivers in inner tubes. It seems to be very popular on a lot of these rivers. We were keeping the option open to check out the Moose Lake area gravel pits but we did so well that we didn't have to. Good luck!

Great finds! Looks like great fun especially with how warm it has been. That would be a great camping trip if you could camp along the river! What part of mn do you live? I'm SE of Brainerd😊 I'm heading up north to camp east of effie but unfortunately I've never seen any great rocks there.
@10Agates
@10Agates Жыл бұрын
I live a little south of Cambridge. No agates around here because we are in a big sand plain with no rocks in the soil at all. I always have to travel at least 30-45 minutes in virtual any direction to find any sort of good soil that has agates. Brainerd should have some agates, especially if you are south and east. A lot of easily accessible places are almost totally picked over so the harder to get to is always a better choice. It’s a more popular hobby than you’d think. This is why we prefer to look in the river over looking around it. A lot of the bigger rivers going through central MN have canoe routes and camp sites. If you have a canoe it is a great option. I’m considering doing this sometime. Filming our short trips is a lot of work. Adding camping on top of that would be whole new level. I’m glad you enjoyed our video.

@10Agates yep I walk the dirt road by my house and find them. They are not very big but I enjoy it. I'm not very knowledgeable about where else to go other than a neighbors small gravel pit where I found a couple of nice ones from the top of the screen piles :-) we have no shortage of rocks! Matter of fact you can't hardly put a stake in the ground without hitting one.

Are these actually valuable? I had found a lot of them over the years but never kept them.
@10Agates
@10Agates Жыл бұрын
Technically they’re considered a semi-precious mineral. Very large ones can be worth a lot of money but generally speaking the time, money and effort spent searching isn’t offset by the amount you could sell them for. It is strictly a hobby for us. I wouldn’t plan to start selling unless we start making them into jewelry or something. Even then it probably wouldn’t be very profitable.
