Oh my gosh! A video about geodes! ☺ I just put one of the geodes (don't know where it's from) in a solution of oxalic acid (over night) and it came out great. It was quite reddish/orange stained on the outside and just a little on the inside and 98% is gone! I just ordered a couple of things from your Etsy store, including a geode (my 1st double 🥰) and some porphyry. I have a couple of other geodes (about 6" across),that were my Dad's ❤and I'm going to try the acid bath on them. By the way, I watched a video about Arkansas crystals and they used a used crock pot and the acid to clean them and it worked amazingly well. PS: It's cool to see how much you've expanded you personal approval of how "perfect" the shine on the pieces! A long way from the Dremel. Way to go ! Smiles & Blessings, 🤗🙏, Dianne

This is not about this video, I've only seen it three times, i'll be back. WHY are you one of my absolute favourite hounds? Because you DO laugh in joy, because you are genuinely happy about what you see. Each rock may have a difficulty, like a small or even a large fracture. Or it's mossy or it's in host rock and you still find joy in them. I understand that what makes the money is the "perfect ones," But pointing out the fractures first, the 'too much quartz', not a whole pattern, etc. just seems to be more negative than positive. YOU find the beauty and then point out the "flaws" (some of us think those flaws can make the rock) and even then "I can work with that, around that". Thank you for your honest and open joy and happiness in your rocks without tearing each and every one down.

I really like all of the geodes. Especially the geodes with the small crystal pillars that sort of look like worms in the geode. I also know how frustrating it is after polishing an agate and after drying it of seeing it has the surface fractures and having to go back to the 120 grit and going back up to three thousand. I really enjoy watching your videos.

Pro-tip - The angle of incident equals the angle of reflectance ie. Your work lights sometimes cause glares on your polished faces. Try angling the polished face slightly down, aiming the face toward your chest. It will remove much of the glare from the work light and overhead light. Good stuff, I have some tool evy.😊

I stop polishing at 1200 with my polishing wheels and finish off with cerium oxide on a low rpm leather polishing pad to get a mirror like finish. Just use high grade cerium oxide (the whiter the c.o. the higher the quality, the tan stuff just won't work well). Also, you could cut with a mineral oil instead of water to eliminate or at least reduce the number of surface heat fractures you get in your stones. I don't use water in any of my saws bigger than 6" because they just produce too much heat when using water. Hope this helps.

Hi Taylor. Curious about these expandable wheels. Are the wheels themselves all alike and the only difference is the belt? Is there a break in period with the belts? Finally, they look wider, so can you polish larger stones?
@AgateDad
@AgateDad 14 күн бұрын
Expandable drums are all same, belts didn’t seem to have a break in period. I think with harder material and larger stones, the process will take longer.

Question: What is the best solution to clean/soak rocks in that have really caked on dirt and grit? I have used just Dawn dish soap and water, but wasn't sure if peroxide or vinegar might be better? Thanks! 😊
@denisecoyne6447
@denisecoyne6447 13 күн бұрын
I like expanadable drums because the belts are cheeper to replace than hard wheels. But I have found, (this is my opinon), that the belts tend to stretch if you are changing them out on one wheel. They start driftling more. And each brand of belt or drum are slightly different sizes. Even if they say they are the same size. And just slight enough to make life miserable. In the shop I used to run people would press too hard and rip them. Would drive me nuts. Especially with hard stones. You have to use a softer touch than with hard wheels, or they will wear out faster. But the 3 " size is wonderful. I still like paper drums but for larger grits i would rather use a hard wheel.

Nice! Maybe it’s me but I didn’t catch the advantage of these drums? Are they just larger or was there something I missed? Also, you may want to buy additional shafts for these and keep them dedicated to the drums so you don’t have to pull off all wheels when changing them out- just the shafts. I have one shaft dedicated to my 8000, 14000 and 50000 wheels. I keep them on the shaft and just switch out shafts.
