In this video, I take on the challenge of cutting a stunning $11,000 wood replacement fossil opal, a rare and mesmerizing piece with incredible potential. What looked like a treasure of vibrant colors turned out to have hidden inclusions that made it impossible to achieve the flawless gem I was hoping for. Join me as I navigate the highs and lows of working with such a unique opal, uncovering its secrets and reflecting on the risks involved in chasing opal perfection. It’s a rollercoaster of beauty, disappointment, and the unpredictable nature of this fascinating gemstone!

Sometimes when I draw or paint, irreversible mistakes happen, especially when it comes to watercolour. In those moments, I try to change my point of view and think of how could I incorporate that mistake into the final result, instead of trying to hide it. It can make the final piece better, or ruin it completely. But every time it's still a learning experience. Of course, it's not comparable to cutting opals by any means, but it's nice and inspiring to see such positive attitude from you 😊

I love it. I have been an artist/scientist for more than 60 years, so I think differently. You probably will not read this justin, but in my view every opal you polish does not have to be the common oval, round, pear, marquise, and cabochon shapes, etc.. Free forms are nice. Most of us are driven by capitalism, and myself as well, up to a point. What I really was impressed about this piece, was it's fossil nature. What a beautiful way for that organism to leave it's remains. Just think, the dinosaurs still roamed and dominated the earth! That's more impressive to me than all the other stones you polished. It's the ghost of a once living thing. Nice! Oh, and I watch all of your videos. Love em', love the Australians.

I think I learn most from your failure videos. Get to see more of your thought process and problem solving. As for my failures… Not much rough online right now at reasonable prices, so I picked up silversmithing as a hobby. Now, I can set my finished opals in jewelry instead of just selling them as loose gems. I’m at the beginning of my silversmithing journey, so I have many, many failures to learn from. :) Typically, I have to make new settings and reset my opals a couple/few times until the final product looks good. Reminds me of the challenges I faced when I first started cutting opals. Take care.

When I decided to try cutting opal again after many years of nothing, I went to my stash of opal I collected over many years, and picked out a stone that didn’t look promising but was a good starter stone. as I worked on it started to show some nice color, but had a slight haze. The more I cut the better it got. In the end it turned out to be a crystal with nice color. Sometime it just goes where the opal want’s to go. Always love the videos.

Nothing out of the other bits? almost seemed like the back might have cleaned up better. Oh well can't win em all. I've already watched pretty much all of your videos as they were coming out. Just recently I have been on another binge of reruns. It's pretty amazing to see the difference from your 4 and 5 year old videos and today. For one your camera work and lighting is far superior, that alone probably makes up for your loss on this stone 10 fold in youtube revenue and the sales this channel generates. The switch to the current wheel has drastically improved your technique and carats saved over that 90 grit and worn out 250 or 280 or whatever it was +experience. You are a very different cutter now. More importantly you seem to have a lovely family and relationship with your wife and son. Glad his back seems to have healed well. Thank you for sharing the journey of uncovering all the beauty and wonder God has endowed these tiny little rocks with. There is really something special about being the first person to see such wonder hundreds of millions of years in the making. Eat some fish tacos with some family and friends and all will be well.

I had a lovely bit of crystal with this gorgeous lavender fire mingling in with other assorted sparks of color. It was so gorgeous. I bought through the mail. I saw one hairline fracture, was planning a cut there. There should have been a couple of carats of pretty,..... It broke into numerous pieces, 7 pieces... I polished them with a Dremel and made gold cage and put the pretties into a cage pendent. My granddaughter loves it! Opal is absolutely gorgeous and has a way of doing exactly what it wants to do. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Wouldn’t life be boring if every day were a ‘walk in the park’. My dear husband of thirty plus years died eighteen months ago, and shortly after I was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer. As for me, I've seen you do something new that I've never seen you do before at least not that I can remember. You polished the sides of your stone so that you could see better into the stone and for me that was pretty cool to see and a good process to do when one needs to see better into the stone. I've learned so much from watching you in your videos, and I know I've got so much more to learn. I feel bad that i haven't been able to pay you back for it, but one day, i definitely will. Dear Mr. Justin. Thank you for this very informative video, which shows that not everything can always work out and that circumstances cannot be influenced by a person. But it is important to learn from it and not give up, and you say and show that beautifully. Whatever the obstacles, they are there for us to overcome and learn for the next time, and that is right. I have probably seen all of your videos, I really like opal and working with it, it is amazing to watch the transformation of the stone into a beautiful and colorful piece of jewelry with you. I work with wire and create home decorations, the largest ones take me more than 110 hours to make. I know what patience is and that even a small mistake can have a big impact. Very sorry to see you have a loss. You have a great channel and I watch every episode, so from someone who has never touched an opal I have a stupid observation/question: With the really bright color along the sides of the fossil, would you have been able to slice down the sides and then cut those pieces where the sand was, so you would then have many bright small pieces? I know smaller gems dont fetch the price per carat as larger ones, but in this case could it have made a difference? Thanks for the great content!

It's a gorgeous stone, and it is definitely a risk with every stone you buy, as you've said many times before. I do wonder what the back of the stone would have looked like, it seemed very bright. I also wonder how it would have faced if it were cut on the side instead of the top.

Yours looked so good to start with but looks are deceiving sometimes. I got a white opal out of a box post marked 1962, my 3rd time cutting and opal, it looked like it had a strong color bar but also had sand spots in it, I ground it down so thin I had to back it with with common opal to get it to make a good stone. I'm glad you were not totally beaten by sand and got a good looking stone out of it.

Wonderful video! Truly great lessons you have to share with opal community! I recently cut some similar material wood replacement opal ,it looked so bright! Reminds me of alluwah fields. It tends to have a cavity right through the middle that makes it impossible to cut or even carve! I have learned a lot over the years from your videos and I thank you

Risky Biscuits for sure, more than I'm willing to risk at my novice skill level. 😮 I'll stick with Turquoise and softer less expensive stuff while I learn. Someday I would ❤️ to be at Justin's level.

One time I bought a nice black opal nobby showing some beautiful blue. When I took the top off it was 100% directional. Looked like clear quartz from the face. The lesson I learned was to go back to cutting agates.

It’s still a real beauty, if not the magical stone you had hoped for. Had the rough cost half as much, we would all be dancing at the results. Fingers crossed for the next one. Magic is on its way, I’m certain.

Hi Justin, that is a bit of a hit to the wallet. Nice looking gem at the finish, a bit short on dollar value compared to purchase price. Hopefully Better days & opals ahead. Keep Safe & Keep Rockin. PS, the voice over guy sounds pretty good.

I guess the lesson here would be always insist the seller either remove some sand from the faces or have it done. I couldn't imagine gambling that much on a stone that hides its secrets so well.

All in all, you've had some fantastic wins here lately, and every once in a while we need to be reminded not to be complacent. Not every stone is a winner, but its the less than stones that push you to be your best to salvage the value that is there. It's hard to think of a 7k stone as a loser, but it will certainly be a winner for the person who gets to wear it. Opals are some of the most beautiful stones in the world, and you allow them to shine in all their glory. That right there is something to be proud of.
