Thinner slabs work for making guitar picks, I've made slabs that were about 1/8" thick so I could make picks. I sell them for about $10 a piece and they go fast.

Many year's ago, 1960's-1970's, there wasn't a lot of information out there about protecting one's health except for using Plenty of water for sawing-cutting-sanding- polishing one's stones. Nothing like the breathing apparatus you're using. Hopefully the few stones, perhaps the hundred or so stones, I did by hand using plenty of water for all stages was enough. When I began learning about cutting-polishing, using a variety of lapidary machines, I was in my early 20's. Haven't cut, etc., any stones in the past 20+ years. Next year will be in my mid-80's.

A tile saw is good to practice on if you’re just starting out, or if you want to slab some lower quality rocks without ruining a potential good piece. And they are more affordable, so you can decide if you’d like to invest in the hobby or not.

Auto feed saws are the way to go if you want the best results with slabs. They can be a little spendy depending on what you get, but there are so many advantages. Just to name a few: More versatile. Perfectly even slabs to the thickness you set, Ability to cut very thin or thick, less chipping/breaking, Less waste, Blades last considerably longer. Zero blade marks (if not zero, then very few and very faint), Much less, if no, finishing work. Higher value slabs due to no blade marks and even slabs. Prominent blade marks in most rocks is usually a sign of needing to replace the blade, it was not clamped down good enough or machine needs tuning.

Hi Taylor, next time you do a 'how to' video could you talk a bit about what you do when you get towards the end of a cut? I notice you turn the rock up and down a bit rather than continue straight, I'm guessing this is to minimise the risk od breakeage as the rock gets to the end? Is that something you've worked out through experience or something you were taught? Or is it just a funny habit that makes no difference? Love your videos and your appreciation of the beauty in the rocks.

Lapidary saws are much easier to cut a variety of rocks. Tile saws will work but they are much slower, you get a lot of chip out with a lot of material loss, and it's a poor quality cut. I just got my 6" saw from Hi-Tech and it's a game changer.

Thanks for sharing all your videos and experience. I have just started rock hounding (71 years young), and I would like to make something nice out of some of the stones I have. You have stated that you use a sintered blade in your 10” Hi-Tech saw. Is this the best one to use or is it your preference, maybe both. Would you mind sharing your experience on blades?
