I think in terms of mothering styles, Portia and Agatha are the way that they are because they essentially had to parent on survival mode. Portia’s husband was a gambler who didn’t care about her or her children. She had to raise all those kids on her own and do it while knowing that her family was not as respected in the ton as others, her husband was useless, and they didn’t really have money like that. Agatha didn’t really parent at all because I think she just resented her kids a bit because of her husband. It was also pretty standard at the time for some to send young children away to live in the country for periods of time and be raised by servants. And her husband may not have wanted the kids around anyway. Violet had a wonderful father and married a wonderful man who was her equal in every way. He was engaged with the kids. He was warm. He was loving. She was able to parent from a place of softness and compassion because she was given the room to do so. Also didn’t hurt that they had money. Now this is not a bashing of Agatha or Portia. I love them both. I think they both did the best they could with what they had. All three of them did the best they could to keep their children, safe and protect their futures, and they all made mistake. But of the three Violet is the only one of the three that I could honestly describe as nurturing. The fact that she’s also the most privileged of the three in many ways is not unrelated. Parenting from survival mode doesn’t really leave much room for vulnerability. And they did not have the kind of frame of reference that Violet did. I think as an audience member Violet is the kind of parent that we would all like to be hopefully and would’ve liked to experience. But the ability to parent from a place of comfort isn’t always realistic. Having a parent or being a parent like Agatha like Portia or some combination of the three women is.

I loved this character breakdown! Thank you so much for doing this. I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on everything and the story about the Nigerian grandmother was fascinating. I do hope you do another one with character opinions on the other members of the cast of Queen Charlotte. Charlotte and George in particular and of course Brimsley and Reynolds. Also the Dowager Princess, I think she’s a very interesting person. Anyway, thanks very much, see you in the next one!

I don't remember what other period dramas or books there are in which I've seen the scenario of a super young woman being betrothed to a much older man. But I seem to remember a pragmatic point being made that parents married off their daughters to old men for security, but also knowing that they would be rich widows able to live for themselves at a relatively young age. Maybe it was a copout justification to make young women not bemoan their options, but a rich, twenty or thirty-something widow has a much easier life than an unmarried woman, or woman married to a poor man who may or may not treat her well. I'm not defending Agatha's parents, but we also don't know what their situation was either. Especially since the series makes no mention that Sierra Leone was a British colony and how that affected their status and economy and lived experience.

I believe Violet's upbringing was the exception. Her father actually showed he cared about her and interest in her, not to mention she was female. Either way, I do agree. I'd choose Violet as a mom. The Bridgeton family life wasn't normal. Concerning how Lord Ledger ended things. He didn't. Violet said her mother sent her with her father. It wasn't his choice and it would look suspicious if he said no. I think Violets mom had a feeling something was off. Lady Danbury ended things after his comment about her reputation.

I agree Violet's upbringing was an exception. Only ok mothers in the show are in poorer conditions. Because they don't have servants or support to fall on.

Yes, about Lord Ledger. At the time of watching it seemed clear to me that the mother had sent Violet, and not to get her out of her way, but because she had suspicions. She must have known that the Danburys lived on the adjoining estate and her husband had singled her out for attention already. Then he goes off repeatedly for LONG walks. If Agatha was missing dinner then so was Lord Ledger. It was Agatha who came to her senses at the mention of her unimpeachable reputation and ended it right then and there. She put her position (and that of the other newcomers to the Ton) first.

Depending on a country in history sometimes it wasn't expected to rise your children in aristocratic sosaity. Usually early upbring was left to servants. Once the children are little older than parents step in. In history there's a lot different understandings of what a parent is and what is expected from them . In one time period it can be way different from one class to other class, and from women to man. there's different expectations.

I loved this video! While, I very much enjoy seeing you react in the moment, my favorite thing about you is when you pause to go in-depth with your thoughts. I love that you made an entire video to discuss these characters! I can't wait to hear your opinions on Brimsley. Seeing him dancing alone in the final episode made me cry more than any other scene.

I'm glad you liked this series... I never finished watching it but it's good to see that you want to... I would really like it if one day you would try to watch an animated series too even if you didn't do it through your channel ... "Frieren, beyond journey's end" is the series that I saw recently and I really liked it, I would love to know what you think about it...and the ones you still need to see, since you liked the Marvel saga is "Daredevil", "Jessica Jones", "Iron fist" and "Luke Cage" and among all of those is "The Defenders" which is only 8 chapters but it is when they are fighting against a common enemy....thanks for always share your point of view here about everything so clearly, I love that you understand in a better way everything you watched here with us.... take care Kemi

I believe Agatha resented her children because she resented her husband. She didn’t see them as her own, but his ..his creatures he put into her. Terrible but it appears that way. Him passing provided an opportunity for her to let that go and why she seemed to realize she hadn’t been mothering them.

Yes, she appears to have been traumatised by the whole experience, and certainly had no good example to show her the way. She was sold at 3 years old like cattle for breeding.

Oh my. She wasn't sold at 3 - that is not a betrothal is. It is an agreement and by her teen years it would be contractually enforced

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. She certainly was sold at 3 years old. Being delivered later does not negate that. Those contracts were legally binding and the girls were transferred to the husbands custody as soon as they started menstruation, or at 13, the legal marriage age. They had to be 21 and get a lawyer to void the contract, but they were already married by then and any money to pay the lawyer legally belonged to her husband, so it was an impossibility in practice. All her children were also the legal property of the father or if he died, the next adult male in his family. Absolutely awful, and it went on well into the late Victorian era. Aristocratic girls were traded for breeding longer than anybody else.
