Then go watch some pro play from TheViper etc and some T90Official streams. Games FAR from dead and actually has a thriving and fiercly competitive Esports scene with a pretty damn large and fanatical community that even host their own tourny prize money to get big events going.

It's actually not, they just reused the ship armor classification for camels back in the 90s because why would ships ever be on land anyway and they were being lazy and it was only used on 2 units back then anyway so why go through the trouble of adding a new armor type. In the recent expansions, which Brit doesn't seem to actually have, Camels are no longer considered ships and have their own armor classification.

@@Templarfreak I may be entirely be wrong and the people who made this incredibly polished game might not care, but out of laziness? Pierce armour already existed, it's super easy to add classification with armours. The real reason has not been discussed, but along with the obvious reference (because again it's the easiest part of making a unit (I make private mods)), I am entirely sure that it was that making knights that are cheaper, do bonus damage against calvary, and can take down castles would be a bad decision. They made it so that all they were good at was killing calvary, and that arrows would do more damage on purpose so you couldn't have both the ability to destroy knights, and the ability to destroy towns (they can obviously but towers counter them to hell). And while they were classified as ships at one point, the only effect that adds is the Heated Shot research (which is pretty major of course). Ships have different armour values than camels, they always had, infact all the ships have unique armour values. They didn't copy and paste, they were just saving space on the CD.

funny thing is the AI building siege reams is exactly how you counter longbows, it just did it in classic useless AI fashion. your units auto fire whatever is closest to them, and rams have 500hp and take 1 damage per arrow. so send in the rams first and suddenly your cavalry or whatever else can get in while the archers are busy with the rams

All the AI needed to do was treb down the walls, send rams vs. enemy longbow/trebs, and clean house with Onagers/Skirms. A hard regular AI won't do it. But I've seen Hardest/Resonance Bot AI do something like that at chokepoints. AI sent rams + petards against me and then after the walls were down flooded me with onagers and monks. AI micro-managing is incredible. A group of 20 monks can target 20 different enemies simultaneously.

The problem is scale though. With units in the hundreds, the Britons will land so many hits before the plumed archers close in that they'll still win. The HD edition makes this worse by letting you have far larger armies by pop size than in the original game. A Teched up Korea can catapult rush longbowmen somewhat effectively, but the cost-benefit of that is REALLY unfavorable.

When I used to play this game I had what I called a Murdersquare. It was a Trebuchet surrounded by a squad of fully upgraded bowmen, which would kill anything coming close while raining fire on anything at a distance. Range always wins.

You don't even need a civ counter. Most siege rams/onagers with a few trebs for walls will do the job. Siege rams take longbow fire, onager destroys multiple longbows per hit and Briton trebs, too.

@@raskolnikovsghost2701 Onagers are good counters against archers except for longbows. Since longbows outrange onagers, a good player can just keep kiting them. Other options: Overwhelm with beefy arrow resistant units like knights/paladins or eagle warriors. Use seige rams to tank damage and push with your own ranged units. Skirmishers have bonus damage against archers and are very arrow resistant. Certain unique units have very arrow resistant. Goth Huskarls (10 arrow armor while longbows do 11), Viet Rattan archers (huskarl style archers) , Korean war wagons (have fun killing 200+ hp, 8 armor archers), Indian elephant archers (same as above with even more HP, but slower), Khmer Ballista Elephants (same as above with splash damage) At high level they might do some silly plays with siege towers. If you can bait them into shallow water, demolition ships can kill disgustingly many archers.

@@robincray116 Yeah. There is not one counter to this strategy but several. Some unique to certain civilizations. But everyone has some way to deal with this issue to variating degrees of efficiency. Now that AI and low skilled players can not really employ them do not show that well how well balanced the game is or not. But if one look at high level play you generally do not see the English with there Longbows dominate. And that shows pretty well how limited this strategy is when you really come up against skilled players.

@@Skitch213 Note that you just need to trade efficiently to win. You do not technically need to hard counter. Hard counters are nice but sometimes commuting to much in to hard counter leaves you vulnerable to counterplay your self. And this is why is a Strategy game. Not just a Tactics game. One need to see the whole picture. Of course someone overcommitting in to Longbows and Trebs is asking for trouble down the line and a hard counter might be very well worth it to put them in to there place. As far as I know there is no civ that gives longer range to there Trebs. Though there is a tech that gives them slightly longer range that not all have. The Japanse could be good counters however as they pack and unpack there Trebs faster. Though the Britons have also some of the best Trebs in the game. But others have post great ways to deal with the Longbow and Treb combo below ;)

The camel exploit is from the 90s version of the game, the HD version does not have this and he knows it, he deliberately made sure to play the original data set in the settings without telling you. The infinite fish thing is a straight up lie. He's lying to you, it's as simple as that. The premise of the video is just false. Honestly, the HD Edition mostly means "We fixed the graphics so they work on today's systems." I kid you not, much like Starcraft and Starcraft: Brood Wars, if you tried to play the original game off the disk on today's computers, you're gonna be seeing a lot of cyan. Some of the textures just simply aren't recognized any more, so you wind up with eye-stabbing graphic corruption. So yes. Raise a cuppa tea to those who have taken the time to fix the graphics for folks still playing twenty years after the game's release.

I love Age of Empires 2, The Conquerors expansion makes the game stupidly fun. I used to play as the Goths because they can spam infantry units to the point of breaking the damn game. With their unique techs, Huskarls can be spat out at "Are you kidding me?!" levels.Second favorite were the Mayans followed by the Teutons.

The camels count as ships issue has been fixed in the HD version since the new expansions were released. AoE2, especially with the new expansions is still an amazing game. Considering the RTS genre has all but disappeared from the gaming industry(SC2 being the last stalwart of RTS games as a whole) there aren't too many new alternatives for RTS fans so old games that still work well like AoE2 still have people playing them. AoE2 is still a special case as it's a lot more popular than AoE3 which is obviously a newer game(yet still old) and the fact that there were 2 new expansions released to it after 2 decades, and by a different development team(not Microsoft itself which released the original game). So technically this game is still quite new considering the 2 new expansions released to it.

Petroglyph made a few games to that are pretty resent. More resent then Star Craft II at least that is getting a bit old but is still a good game. We have had several remasters and remakes. Everything from Age of Empire I and II to Cossacks 3. Eugen is doing there own thing with Wargrames and now Steel Division. There are quite a lot out there if you start looking. Both games that try to do something new and game that try to mimic older games. But of course if no one is buying these games then they wont be continued to be made. What I listed was just a few examples but there plenty more I could list.

From what I've heard, it was less of a bug and more a means to counter camels being too strong in Castle Age raiding because of their bonus against knights and such. Making them excessively vulnerable to TC fire was apparently the best solution they could come up with at the time.

The funny thing is, Elite Longbowmen with maxed Range can actually shoot further than any other unit, INCLUDING the Trebuchet. Get all the Ranged upgrades from the Blacksmith and the bonus from the Castle in the Castle Age. The absolute beast unit of the whole game, when i play as the Britons, the Longbowmen are the only unit besides Villagers & ships that i bother creating.

Rams can tank a hell of a lot of archer, tower and even some trebuchet fire. Once your rams destroy the gates, rush in the hussars. I am not stating it's easy (brits are one of the best civs for closed maps after all) but it is one way if they lack any kind of melee unit.

That's not entirely true. If don't counter this quickly they will have way too much dps from the archers preventing rams from getting close. onagers still works well but only if you manage to use the rams to take advantage of unit ai to keep fire away from them, which a decent player will target fire to get around that. So although that is the best way to counter this, it's also not quite that simple. And yes I know, if HE did this, he would probably lose but that's because he's admitted already to not being that good, has no micro, and probably has bad macro as well.

remember a game i played years ago against a friend. he loves the britons and spammed longbowmen, wich i knew and prepared a few onagers and wiped out his entire army of archers as soon as he attacked me, they didnt live long enough to even do any damage. then i just ordered by teutonic knights to crusade over his lands. then he kited my army of paladins with his king for several minutes before i got tired of chasing that big pile of fat around his destroyed lands and left. he still to this day claims he "won" that game. while technicly true. he had no villagers left, no production buildings left. so no ability what so ever to cause damage to anything.

Yeah. It is a pretty newbie tactic to use only longbowmen. Do not work as well against actual decently skilled human players however. But against the AI or a somewhat low skilled player it works like a charm. There are a few of these newbie strategies that really give you a advantage when you leaning the game.

Longbow spam works fine with the AI, in MP is suicide if unsupported. The other player will spam skirmishers which are more cost-effective, making you bankrupt while they stockpile shinies, if they are playing the Goths, Huscarls rip them apart because of definitely-not-overpowered anti-pierce armor and speed and attack bonus and really fast infantry spam and others usually will use ye olde ram-mangonel-cheese against mass-longbow-cheese. TL;DR: MP matches are cheese-fests.

They rather did it to balance things out. They didn't want to give the camel civs a unit that is supposed to counter knights also to be good at raiding villagers and thus be superior to knights in all aspects. That's why, even with the new expansions and the introduced camel armor class, camels still receive a hidden extra damage from Towers (but minor than before).

Siege Ram's are basically immune to bow attacks. You would need 180 longbow men fireing at it to have a chance of taking it down before it can destroy a wall or gate. You can also equip infantry to it to make it move and attack faster. And can spam out about 20 of them for next to nothing. They would easily destroy his walls and towers and laugh at his longbow men, siege weapons such as a onager can litterally kill his entire 60man longbow men army in 1 attack. The only reason this strat worked in this game is that the AI's were fighting each other. @@Cheshiremd

It has to do with how units prioritize fire (choosing to shoot at the closer units). However, onagers are not a good counter agaisnt longbows, as longbows range them. Paladins hard counter longbows, as longbows accuracy suck, fire speed suck, they are hard to mass, and are too expensive to be cost effective. (Brits are bottom tier archer civ, Mayans and ethiopians are far, far better. Mongols are also better (cuz mangudai are OP). (100 paladins are easier to mass then 100 longbows, as 3 stables beats the production rate of 1 castle.).

Spamming longbows can be beaten by a few ways; all game pressure, rams, siege spam, huskarls, skirmishers, etc.. For longbows, they must get all the way to imperial, get all the archer upgrades, also the expensive imperial age upgrade before getting maxed out range, they must also invest thousands of gold for the mass of archers to a point that defeats siege weapons. Also the balance might not be really perfect between factions, but many of the top players only finish or play until Feudal, if they have to, they'll go into castle-imperial age. The balance is practically exactly the same up until imperial age. You can get some really messed up unbalance like Goth huskarls vs archer spammer, but that player still chose to spam archers against Goth while knowing it was the opponent the whole time. A lot of the balance and calcuation in AOE2 (ensemble studios RTS games in general) is actually quite good or rounded perfectly, and oddly, when they made expansions or DLC they usually designed them underpowered at first rather than modern game devs who offer pay-to-cheat strategies to kids by overpowered factions.

3:22 ACKTUWALLY Fun fact, the AOE2 AI doesn't actually cheat much. They need to use scouting to actually do anything, they have no resource cheats (bar the highest difficulty), and I seem to remember their only map vision comes in the form of knowing how many fish tiles are still on the map. The reason the hardest AI is really hard to beat is actually just because it's coded to be REALLY good at the game.

That's the new Ai or updated ai , but the original ai used to get extra resources I don't remember if it had your map position as well

They don't resource cheat on any level, but they do get some vision advantages (IIRC once they scout you they know your total number of military units, even if they haven't seen your military.) Spirit of the Law has a video in which he interviews one of the people who wrote the AI.

Yeah but they dont know what the military units are until they see them. You can trick the ai by making one archer and sacrificing it to the ai, and it will then think all your other units are archers

This game is perfectly balanced. Civs like the Goths are given flak for their extremely powerful late game, but they can be countered by early game rushes or hard counter units such as gunpowder or mass cav. Your brits did well because A.) Saracens are comparatively one of the worst civs in the game. B.) Mass Long bowmen will always chew threw any force without good pierce armor. And C.) The Ai isn't very good at exploiting counters except maybe on Hardest difficulties (They usually slaughter me before I get to that stage though). I really would enjoy seeing you play in the online community, AOE2's community is one of the best gaming communities I've encountered, with an extremely supportive and welcoming player base. Finally, camel =/= boats anymore. It's been patched :)

I still play this game! It's even pretty fairly balanced, human vs human. Watch TheViperAOC for examples of competitive Age of Empires game tournaments with cash rewards. Yes, that's still a thing.

The point is that this strategy let him get his second win vs Hard AI. Is there a better "exploit" that will let a bad player win vs multiple, unteamed Hard AIs? Camels were ships in this game because it's original data set. Maybe he only bought "AoE2 HD", and not the expansions.

Also, how is it an exploit winning with massed range against AI? And to answer your question, yes, fully walling up with stone walls with castles and mangonels behind it waiting for the AI to kill eachother seems like very easy way for bad players to win VS unteamed Hard AIs. Or is that broken too?

How many games deliberately retain old bugs and imbalanced data sets? If there's a bug in WoW that lets you duplicate items by zoning into an instance with a trade window open, they fix it for everyone, not just people who select "yes please disable game exploits" when they log in. AoE2 is quite unusual here. Note that criticism of the 'exploit' shown in this video is sort of unfounded. There weren't any camels at the end, so it didn't matter if they were ships or not. A good example of this is Joan of Arc's cavalry armor class (she takes extra damage from spearmen despite being on foot) in the first scenario! They actually fixed it in the HD expansion data set, but if you play the campaigns it uses the original data set, so, . . . not fixed. If they just didn't include the original data set at all, difficulty would be changed but this bug would be gone.

@@Rohkiani311006 I agree, and I think, if there was a bug that let's you duplicate units or resources it would be patched for all games. But a camel being a boat usn't the worst... It's a bug, yes, should it be fixed for the main game? Yes. But I think forgotten empires (creators of new expansions) weren't allowed to touch the base game, just create new expansions...

There is still a strong and active AoE 2 community. The official server for it is not so much Steam but rather Voobly but there are not mutually exclusive. There are still quite big (and prized) tournaments. Playing it in 2019 is not extraordinary by any stretch. Very good games stand the test of time. It'd be like being surprised to see people still playing chess in 2019. That's a normal thing to do ;). And yes it's a perfectly balanced game. Longbows can be countered by any human player, alongside any other unit you can do in the game. Everything has a counter (or several ones) which is how good games are designed. Now, for what beats longbows : - Skirmishers - Huskarls - Elite Eagle warriors - Heavy cavalry - Onagers - Rams (put some huskarls or skirms inside them and go) Other archers units can also be stronger than longbows, as long as they are in range : - Elite Mangudais - Plumed Archers - Camel archers And i certainly miss out on some other counters :)
