The usual tournament pick and ban system in AOE is some variant of the players taking turns picking factions until they are all picked, and then each player bans 1 of the factions their opponent picked. Each of the players then blind picks from their remaining pool of factions for each game. There is usually some sort of map pick and ban where each payer picks one map they want to play and bans one map. Island maps are an acquired taste. They are all about build orders and the naval battle. Usually they become a stalemate for a while as if a player pushes towards another player, that player gets farther away from their docks and ship production. If a player loses the naval battle really bad they do have other options, such as building a navy in secret or just trying a land economy and landing an army on an opponents island.

the main thing I have noticed in french matchups is that the bottleneck is train speed more than resources, so it's really hard to mass enough spearmen to counter the knights in the early feudal, which gives the french a pretty solid window to close out the game

yeah, kinda right about the rus being top tier. At first sight, rus, compared to english or french has their "perks" a little difuse compared to others, or perceived their economy as weak. I mean: french has their resource invest through the guild and english has their gold through farms, obviously we know how good is that. But rus has this special thing around forest and gold that is hard to appreciate until you try other factions and you say: why the hell im so broke? Truth is: other factions are broke. Everyone has no money compared to the Rus. . If you focus on having lots of hunting cabins and 2 knights to hunt everything, you will have the max reward in no time. That means 250 max gold every 18 secs, basically 832 gold per minute, almost like 10 guys mining gold with t3 harvest tech. Saving up your free trades from the unique market= almost infinite streltsi and knights. Gotta love the rus.

I skipped the middle segments of pick/ban, but I'd go with a simple format of; Game 1 - -Player 1(P1) gets 1st ban (each player bans one faction per game) -P2 gets 1st pick faction after bans Game 2 - (opposite) -P2 gets 1st ban -P1 gets first pick Sort of modeled around league of legends.

I think you're underestimating China. They're flexible with their landmarks and special units, and their win condition is surprisingly easy to hit. Very easy for your A-tier factions to just hit a wall against the Rus, but China can legitimately challenge them very well in multiple phases of the game.
