I just think how each thing of the main things Slaanesh promotes - the desire to improve, the desire to be loved, the desire to enjoy and love life - are all good things, in and of themselves. "It is the right dose that differentiates a poison from a remedy. ... All things are poison and nothing is without poison" (Chanakya, if you're interested). Plus, in WHFB there was a dwarf cult to Slaanesh, which blew my mind and put paid to the whole "dwarves can resist chaos" idea for me
@kimarous5 жыл бұрын
I like the version you presented of the Grey Knight who reached and faltered when meeting Slaanesh. The one I had heard before presented it as yet another uber-androgynous figure too beautiful to kill, the knight simply being worn down by all the trials he'd undergone to reach there - honestly, feels kinda pedestrian. However, being caught off guard by what seems like pure innocence in the heart of corruption is by far the more compelling portrayal.

I think Shlaneesh and the other dark gods are cool because they reflect our 'shadow selves', and our disowned nature. It's easy to hate chaos for the misery it brings, yet humans have arguably done worse to each other without the dark gods help. Love these lore videos dude!!!
@khornebread34745 жыл бұрын
One of my favorite stories is from the Liber Chaotica: Slaanesh when the writer is speaking to the Marquis Dolmance. The writer is a priest of Sigmar in the old world interviewing a captured Slaanesh cultist before his execution. The writer starts bashing Dolmance for his hedonism and like you said, just harping on the sexual acts and shock factor of Slaanesh. But the Marquis turns it around on him and explains how Slaanesh is the god of ALL excess. He even makes the writer freak out when he tells him that his religious fervor and zeal to Sigmar is an excess that feeds the Prince of Pleasure. I just love Slaanesh because to me personally he is the most relatable Chaos god. I think humans all have some form of base depravity, and even if they are morally good, they still seek to be the best at something and that is what Slaanesh feeds on. Another story I like is from 40K where it is talking about Lucius the Eternal. Lucius had just killed a loyalist marine and so he makes a cut on his scalp. He notes how when he first began to fall to Slaanesh, the pain of scarification would give him a sensory thrill and the high that he desperately sought. Now it just barely teases his senses. I like how Slaanesh, like all the gods, eventually wholly corrupts his followers by making the high not good enough so that they seek the next level of devotion.

In his old Warhammer fantasy novel Sigvald the Magnificent meets Slaanesh, in the novel it was said that Slaanesh took the form of what you thought was most beautiful and so Sigvald saw himself as to him he was perfection, he then tried to kill Slaanesh as an imposter. Slaanesh is probably my second favourite Chaos god right under Tzeentch, the sex stuff is whatever but the whole mastery and the arts side is what appeals to me.

@@TheLonePantheist All Chaos Gods care about their champions. Chaos champions aren't "used", they've willingly given themselves up for their Gods, and their Gods love them for that, Khorne made Valkiya into his consort (his literal wife). And he talks with Korghuz Khul and shows him visions of what he will become. Additionally, he has a very sweet spot for Kharn. Nurgle loves his champions. Typhus is a hardcore example of how much a champion can be beloved by their God. Mortarion too. Look at how he elevated Gutrot Spume even without him specifically asking for it. Or how he accepted Twiceborn into his ranks. Tzeentch explicitly protects Ahriman from death. He also helped the Curseling become a major player in the World That Was (before it became just a unit, not a champion). Slaanesh has Sigvald and Fulgrim, both are VERY dedicated to themselves (and in that way, they honour Slaanesh beyond any other). And Slaanesh loves them. The mistake that some fans make is that they think all Chaos followers are "tricked" into it, and that they regret it. Which is simply untrue. A lot of Chaos followers, especially the champions, are wholly dedicated to their Gods and greatly enjoy their faith. They revel in their own degeneracy. Nurgle is the most outwardly "caring" because his entire theme is "Us vs Them". They loathe themselves but seek validation from their group. But all other Gods care about their followers and champions.

I love that you emphasized Slaanesh is more than sex and physical pleasure. 💜 A small bit that I would have loved to see brought up is how Slaanesh followers share many similarities with masochists and sadists. I'd love to see GW create cults of different obsessions within a new range of mortal devotees of Slaanesh for both 40k and AoS: --A host of magnificent warriors in elegant and glittering golden armor, encrusted in jewels, but leaking blood and fluids from the joints in the armor, which house bodies that have become nothing but writhing flesh. --A bacchanal of satyrs that sing and dance merrily with pipes and drums, but go into a psychotic frenzy when their revelry is interrupted by battle. --A cabal of wizards that, in their obsession to accrue mystical knowledge and power, have lost their physical forms completely, and have become a twisted and crackling maestrom of tortured flesh and arcane energies. Six circles, six cults. It would be awesome!

I really like the idea of the circle of indolencey. The idea of peace, quiet and rest is often associated with Nurgle, but in the form of depressive stagnancey, and rarely recognised with Slaanesh, often represented by speed, rapture and noise (e.g. noise marines). With Slaanesh, this circle, being the closest circle to the palace gives the idea that some Slaaneshi cultists might like peace and quiet. Some cults might exist that are excellent at diplomacy and avoiding warfare with other kingdoms simply because they find the idea of warfare more effort than it's worth, and you can't experience the pleasures of life if you die on a battlefield.

The army is bassed around a Keeper of secrets whom watched over slaanesh's managery. Now with slaanesh gone he sees no reason why she can't go out into the realms and collect more monsters for their and slaanesh's collection. I'm also aiming for a bit of "beauty and the beast" vibe with beautiful daemonetts next to fowel beasts. The monsters more primitive desires to eat and protect their territory expanded to exceseive levels being heareded into battle by the keeper's daemonette assistants . He is a protender for whom else but the Slaanesh's master of beasts can tame the ofhed daemons of slaanesh and unite them once more in glorious revelry.

Great video. I look forward to the rest of the week. One thing that has always struck me, going back to the original Realm of Chaos days, is that Slannesh and Khorne are two sides of the same coin. Its cool that this new lore, brings that hinted at and subtle thread, to a more definitive ideology. In this case rage and warfare. In a sense I can see a Khorne Lord on a precipice. And the precipice is this, if your warfare becomes self serving then you risk being branded an apostate. In short a Khorne Lord's worship of Khone through warfare and rage must be selfless worship. I enjoy how the Chaos God's are so complex once you get past the first image that people see. As you said, in Slannesh's case, sexualized desire. Thanks again!

So, I’d been pondering for months whether drinking excessively or excessive snobbery pleased Slaanesh more. After about four months, what I concluded was, it’s not the act, but the enjoyment of the act that pleases Chaos. So, if you can do the act without enjoying it, you’re safe.
@TheBayzent4 жыл бұрын
A very puritan way of seeing it. Obviously erroneous. The pleasure of the act is temporary, and certainly not what Slaanesh is after, since, senses get numbed down, instead of increased with the Prince of Excess. No, it is the process that goes on your mind, the obsession when you think about alcohol, the anxiety you feel when you see somebody who you consider inferior, getting to your level, that leads you to obsess about improving yourself so you can keep demonstrating your superiority. That is what the Dark Prince is after. In general, when thinking about Chaos entities, always remember it is _sentient_ thought what feeds and gives them form. All creatures experience pleasure, only sentients experience _obsession_ . Every creature can experience anger, but only sentients can experience rage (for Khorne for example). You always need to separate the instinct from the rest.

Grey Knight story is in the Daemons Codex and it's absolutely great, and it does a great job of explaining who and what Slaanesh is. The codex also does a great job of explaining how Slaanesh in many ways feed off of the other chaos gods, as all the other gods to some extent represent an excess of a certain attribute, and how Slaanesh can never truly be defeated because he is excess itself. Looking back at some of my old army books etc. some of the memes about Slaanesh is a monster GW themselves created, as a lot of them in my opinion don't really explain Slaanesh much beyond being some kind of BDSM weirdo (which he is, but he's so much more than that). If one is interested in Slaanesh, Fulgrim by Graham McNeill is an excellent read and you get to see both noble warriors and artists fall to the powers of the Dark Prince.

With the new Hedonite models coming out this month I would like to custom make my own Slaanesh champion. He would be someone who sees the pain and suffering of the realms and rather than fall into despair (Nurgle), desire to change it (Tzeentch) or lash out against it (Khorne) he instead sees it and decides he will not only survive but thrive indulging in every one of his vices. Figuring that since things are so shitty he might as well just enjoy the Chaos of it all. Such as I wish to do a narrative campaign of him invading Ghyran just so he can take it's natural beauty for himself and build his own pleasure palace there with as much brutality and pain as possible.

they should just fold morathi and her daughters into slaanesh when it finally breaks free, take the darklings with her, make that their mortal component. From the way they look, the colours, the vibe, the way they act, the way they play on the table being fast glass... they share far to close a design space right across the entire scope. Just collapse them all together and use the gap left by daughters to either pay some attention to an existing faction like freepeoples or create something entirely different and unique that sits in its own distinct design space imo. We dont need 2 hordes of pink haired hellbitches flying around the place bathing in blood, 1 is quite enough.

My first encounter with Slaanesh: A long time ago, back in high school, I was doing what most nerdy kids in the throes of puberty did and looked for porn. Found this QT demon girl based on some pics a friend had as his computer's desktop (even back then, my google-fu was impressive!). Anyways I did what hormornal boys are wont to do and it dawned on me to learn more about this hot demon chic. So that's how I learned three things. 1: Slaanesh is (usually considered) a guy 2: I was apparently bisexual 3: Slaanesh is scary as shit 3.1: (S)he can beat Goku and Superman, which was our benchmark of whether something was "Too dang strong to make sense". (We had this discussion one day, and came to the conclusion that since (s)he likes to mess with moralistic guys and both of them are pretty simple and goody-two-shoes, they'd totally get baited into some fake heroism traps) So...yeah sketchy demon smut was my introduction to 40K. A bit cliche, but contextually appropriate I'd say.

It is a rather slow and creeping change and by far the most fitting seduction to humans. Sure you could stop going to Slaanesh influenced Orgies, drinking exquisite wine and admire the good life. Instead you can go back to your old life at any point. But will life ever be that fun and joyful again ? "Perhaps it's okay to sin just a little bit from time to time. It happened to be slaanesh, then I saw the goofy crab claw model's and the harlequins had badically been squatted. There was some rules but after building an eldar army and playing it. I hated the play style and blowing an opponent off the table like that. Remember back in 3rd terrain was like this really bad after thought and eldar had more dakka than an ork army triple it's size. It was after this no joined the excessive nature of miniatures and started a nid force. That would come to an end and my leaving 40k for fantasy with the 3rd edition nid codex dropping and invalidating my freshly painted 2k of nids after a handful of games. I would go play night goblins because squigs... I hardly painted or expanded an army after i finished this army. I started college and working in 2002. Gaming took a back seat. But the excess did not. Dvd's, partying and other hedonistic adventures. 6 years later I finally picked up a brush again and started painting and gaming. Slaanesh perfectly captures the sin and flaw of every miniature war gamer. It is the only honest representation of gamers. Everyone has a pile or closet of unrealized potential, the abandoned potential and the impulse buys that makes you go hmm really that... Eventually I came back to warhammer. After warmachine, infinity, malifaux, confrontation, battletech and 9th age. All the excess, collecting and painting... Slaanesh is a gamers patron deity and the imperium's lap dogs are the greatest unwitting worshipers.

I could not have come back at a better time... finished updating my dark eldar, got the new harlequins painted... was on my 17th and 18th skyweavers when wraith and rapture dropped... so with that I knew a new keeper was on the horizon and I started the slaanesh army that has eluded me for decades... the new models made the wait worth it... Yes like any good hedonite i picked up 4 boxes of wraith and rapture. The excess of it was intoxicating.

See, if I ran a Slannesh army, it'd probably be the "sexual" focus of it's own excessiveness, but lore wise it'd bounce around with it's reasons for being where it is and doing what it is. There is just so many options for battle, but I could never resist doing a "Corp of Deviancy" focus for the hell of it. That and I'm too squeamish to focus on the body horror sadism/masochism of it, and if I wanted to go the route of Gluttony I'd go Nurgle because Papa Nurgle loves everyone.

I prefer the sexual aspect. It's more creepy and shameless.

Great overview of Slaanesh, the most misunderstood of all of the Gods
