I just got into warhammer recently. Why is it so hated?
@risingdawn52595 жыл бұрын
@@twopiecehoxton Basically three reasons. 1: people had been buying, building, painting and playing armies for nearly 30 years and End Times wiped those armies out rendering them obsolete. 2. People had been absorbed into the lore, the fluff, the backstories and history, the setting and the world of Warhammer. End Times blew it all up and replaced it with...3: Age of Sigmar. AoS replaced everything including the actual game system. Warhammer Fantasy was now gone, the armies, gaming system and lore all gone and replaced by AoS. It's worth noting at this stage AoS was a shell of it's current state, rule wise and lore wise. It was no replacement for 30 years of Fantasy. Now, a few years down the line, AoS has developed into a great game, the lore is more fleshed out and the armies greatly expanded. And hey, those old army books and rule books are still on shelves right, no one has to stop playing Fantasy, it still exists as part of the Warhammer history. In my opinion it's no different than playing a historical wargame. But that's just my opinion, others may feel different ;)

I think that after a while, you stop having a passion for your craft. And if it's a story someone else would get inspired and strive to learn everything. When a person loses their passion, they start to make mistakes like making characters do what you want them to do, so you can force it into your narrative. So you can finally stop and end the story you didn't know was gonna make it big. While others are enthralled and can really tell how the story should go....i think when writers are in this stage of their story...they need to get the fans involved. To help him reinspire and remember why this world was so important and hype to him. But that's just me...

Thank you Doug for these videos!! You have no idea (well, you probably do) how hard it has been to find AoS lore videos that weren't filled with incredible negativity and hate. I personally wouldn’t have chosen the AoS reboot of FB, I think Endtimes books were reasonably well written but messy in terms of how they tied the lore together; HOWEVER now that it has happened we have to just get on with it and you do a great job of getting others excited by and interested in the new AoS lore which does after all at the least have the asset that it’s new and fresh and therefore exciting IF people don’t choose to just gripe about how it ain’t FB. Thanks a lot for covering this Doug, it's such a touchy subject so many lore masters never even delve into what I believe was a really well put together plot and finale to 30 years of story. The books and battle plans were incredibly well written and you're 100% right that it jump-started what AoS is now. I think the 'no more square bases' and lack of initial believe-ability of AoS's background really lent a lot of hate to this damn great story, and maybe if GW released the AoS rules during the End Times it could have been a smoother transition...but it's done and although there's still remnants of hate, things didn't end up too bad Warhammer still rules.

Nathaniel Pyatt In the last End Times book, Grimgor fights Archaon and actually almost wins. But Archaon has major plot armour as usual so he summons a powerful demon into his sword and 1 hits grimgor. So basically Archaon cheats to win and grimgor dies.
@blindlobster5 жыл бұрын
@@seraphazrael4218 That's lazy of GW, (no offence to you) Archaon fought Grimgor 10 years earlier in the Storm of Chaos conclusion. In the Storm of Chaos campaign, Grimgor actually did win the fight and smashed Archaon into mush but Archaon was wearing the plot armour.
@Zeradias0904 жыл бұрын
@@blindlobster you know that event is not canon right?
@blindlobster4 жыл бұрын
@@Zeradias090 Yes, I know that the Storm of Chaos is no longer canon. It's a shame because GW were a lot more competent when handling SoC than they were when handling The End Times. I was just saying that copying some-one else's idea is not creative. As a sidenote, the quality of GW's written material has decreased so much, that the term "canon" no longer has the value that it once had. People were upset when Mat Ward took control of writing the background, but his successors make him look like Dan Abnett or Sandy Mitchell. There is good reason why the "background/codex" writers refuse to put their names on their material. As another sidenote, Mat Ward isn't too bad when he is watched, unfortunately he was given too much freedom, too early. Finally most of GW's background material has been repelled from canon, at some time or another. We can look at (Fantasy) Bretonnians, The Empire, Ogres, Halflings, Lizardmen, Chaos Dwarfs, Beastmen etc and Sci-fi Ecclesiarchy armies, Necrons, Imperial Guard, Chaos Armies, Inquisiton Armies and perhaps the Eldar armies as well has been repelled from canon. So the term canon no longer has a deep value... It would be good for Games Workshop to actually try to do a good job again, but I'm not holding my breath.

Not just the undead- oh well I guess it was cut bcs of time. It’s just I played them and now they are all gone and forgotten - lol sad panda. ;) 2) naa the elves dont live on the British isles. The elves live on Atlantis (or where Atlantis was supposed to be in our world according to some legends- right smack in the Atlantic Ocean). The warhammer equivalent to the brittish isles is called Albion. Its much smaller than the elvish ‘Atlantis’ - it’s at a different place on the globe and has a Celtic/Druidic theme. 3) tomb kings are not in ‘Egypt’- they were more like all over ‘Africa’ tbf. 4) Lustria where the lizardmen/seraphon was from was ‘southern America’ and not Africa. I know they look kinda similar on the map but still- another place on the globe and quite different from each other. Thx for the rundown though - btw you have a great voice for this sort of thing👍

What might be interesting is if the Chaos Wastes at the poles of the Warhammer World turned out to contain regions of dimensional transition, potentially allowing one to 'physically' journey to other lands or the warp or realms of chaos, perhaps similar to a natural 'web way' traversing actual terrain. The ebb and flow of the chaos energies might be like a tide that flows and permeates through out the Warhammer World, potentially influencing this and other magical effects, as well as driving the dynamics and cycles of the forces of chaos and magic. With something like this it might be possible to explore other scenarios, which is what Age of Sigmar reminds me of.
@arinallen6 жыл бұрын
I think what happened was that Slaanesh and Tzentch, two archetypes of the Chaos powers, got together and wove a great spell that effected a polar shift of the magical chaos energies of the Warhammer World. The Warhammer World was sucked into the warp, all the Age of Sigmar business transpired, and like a lemniscate or sine wave, or turn of the wheel, the polar shift was realized, and by this, the Warhammer World was then pushed out of the warp and restored, essentially at the point at which it had entered, however, reborn, with the great magics and chaos energies which sustain the world much rejuvenated and replenished and reshaped in many ways. With something like this, not only can we get the Warhammer World back, we can keep and invent new scenarios (if there are in fact walking paths straight into the Chaos realms), set up the potential for end times of the future, and greatly re-fashion a more limitless potential for the Warhammer World. That's got my vote! In the versions of WFB and WFRP I am familiar with (3rd edition WFB, the best yet!), it's possible to summon demons, and angels, and presumably any manner of entity from other realms, which might also influence the Warhammer World. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the Slann Warp Gate collapse may have been cause by such a polar shift, and in the oldest lore of the Warhammer World, references might be found to such antediluvian history, potentially to times when gods and mortals occupied the same realm, and everything was magic?
Cracking video chaps! I remember reading the novels a few years ago and thought the jumped around a lot. Thanks for making it so concise!

Was heavily involved with the end times world wide campaign events. the whole time my friends and i were expecting the realm of man to turn the war around some how and was totally shocked when AoS was released. i will admit that the rules for WHFB were very, very heavy and even a small game was half a day to the whole day. i remember me and a friend decided one time to field and play our entire forces, he played empire, and it took close to a week to play it. looking back, i should have expected the change, every time GW released new stuff for my army it just seemed to get more and more OP. anyhow i started play 40k after that and haven't plat any AoS but i know people that do and love it. even though i was disappointed about the change I can not say anything bad about it honesty, the rules were becoming more and more complected with every update and, at the time, less and less people played WHFB every year. if they had not done it i doubt they would even have a fantasy line aside from LOTR. just wanted to share my experience from that time. loved the video.

Seraphon player here! I just had a quick question about the Lizardmen in the end times. In the Seraphon battletome it talks about how the Lizard men held back their enemies for an incredible amount of time, fighting to the last man in order to buy their Slann time to work a ritual. This ritual then allowed their temples to float up into space, and into other realms. Was this added after the end times in order to allow the Lizardmen to still exist, or was this always the case and they weren't ENTIRELY wiped out by the Skaven? Loved the vids, and keep up the good work!

For sure! It looks like I'll have to read ET so I can see how it all went down in detail. I definitely would love to read about the Lizard Men tearing into hordes of Skaven.
@TheRowdyKing12437 жыл бұрын
Joseph Tipton the whole reason the skaven defeated the lizardmen is the slann were all in a coma from stopping the warp moon. The lizardmen were left being led by skinks and sauras. I think the writers couldn't think of a way to make the skave beat the lizardmen with all the slann in tact so they put them all in a coma

Joseph Tipton It looks like they escaped on their magic ship pyramids, lots of the heros died but in the new AOS they all come back. So the lizardmen are the only ones who survived the end times. Interestingly Lord Kroak decided to come back to life, lifted areas of lizardmen into space, died again and then came back as a magic star powered frog, who rearanged the stars to look like his face while fighting. Overal I hate AOS lore, its gone from interesting world to 'they fight coz they do' on a world build for fighting. The lizardmen are the only ones who are similar to their old lore.

Gotzer Drake Zerora Venandi I dislike the AOS lore because it is so generic and lost so much of the fantasy lore. Look up some of the old lore and you will see just how much more there is too it. Like a 2000 (or more) year old lizard that shoots sun-beams from a magic gauntlet and has a spear made by ancient gods.

I just started in warhammer lore as of like August early when the ccg game came out,I’ve never been into any warhammer of any kind sadly until now ,I have heard about it For many years but never got into it ,so here I am folks,right at the beginning of age of Sigmar,what a place to start,right at the very beginning of a whole new age folks,what a blessing😉!

Here’s a thought from a guy who never played AOS or the old world. I’ve watched some lore videos of the old world and did some research on AOS to decide if I should go with this or 40K and for me, personally, I love the old lore. The world names sound more fantasy to me and the real world analogues piqued my interest more so. I also love the idea of the Tomb Kings, Kislev and Lizardmen and the Skaven. From what I saw on the new world it just didn’t seem interesting to me. But that’s just me

Really great video. In my particular case, I love the mechanics of AoS but miss the story of the Old World.

Absolutely love the work you're doing with these lore videos. I have to say, when the Old World died, I didn't really care about the new story. It just didn't resonate with me. After listening to your videos though, haven't gone through them all yet, I've come to the realization that the Old World isn't truly dead. The events off that time still are playing a role in the Age of Sigmar. You've rekindled my interest in the lore. Thank you.

I LOVED the lore and characters of WHFB. However, now that I'm a few years into AoS, i rarely find myself missing it gameplay wise. At least on a local level, the community around here is stronger than it's ever been, finding games is super easy, and most people are super cool. And I have to say, I'm really into what they are doing lore wise at the moment. The new edition book is a huge step in the right direction and I'm stoked at what's to come.

I can’t tell how anything’s different as aos has all the same factions+ a few more, so instead of a wave of extinctions there’s actually more than ever.

I played WFB from the beginning, mainly as orks and skaven and the whole slaves to darkness chaos warband campaigns. I was not playing at the time of the end times. I recall some friends being annoyed that they no longer had a game for their army. Some turned to kings of war. I have just started AoS with Skaven and it is really not much different now to the army I had about.. fifteen years ago? and a lot of armies don't seem that different in appearence and play style... skaven vs Seraphon could be an old world battle if I so wanted but I am not really troubled, I like the AoS lore too.

my main problem with GM is that they create places like lustria which is south America and an African continent but have none of the native peoples of those continents instead filling them up with the empire or brettonia

I like that age of sigmar is expanding out now with the lore, it was a big hit to lose the old world but i'm hopeful they can make the new one just as or more interesting moving forward. Either way this time i hope its here to stay.

Lustria was rather South America. Africa was sometimes explorer in fantasy battle, but no major events were described happening there in the main line of events.

Hi @2+Tough that was a really good video. Could you please do a video that then also walks us through from the end of the End Times to the start of the Age of Sigmar?

@@2Tough dam man. Thanks a lot for replying, and I shall now subscribe to your channel. Maybe it's the age of myths that somewhat touches on this time. Also, you've answered so many questions already and yet still so many unanswered, and I think that's the the reason why it's such an amazing world and story, so amazingly rich in everything it is and shrouded in myth and mystery at the same time. One of the greatest fantasy worlds ever created. Wish movies would start being made in Warhammer, the old world and AoS, there's enough material to make movies for like the next one hundred years.
@xIrishSkillzx7 жыл бұрын
My biggest issue is how they did this "send off" for the fantasy world, then just kept alot of the same names and heroes. If you're going to take a risk and start fresh, then just do it 100%. I play(ed) both, but find the fluff for AOS and the conception of its beginning ridiculous.

I played WHFB back in the old days (25+ years ago maybe) and I'm starting to get into AoS, so this was useful to get me up to speed, thanks. Just on question, my memory is that the Skaven of the old world are the decedents of the builders of the warp gates, what happened to my them nihilists and want to trash everything?

Lizardmen were in South America and Elves are based on Atlantis and Ancient Rome and Greece. Britain was both Albion and Brettonia to an extent as Brettonia was an amalgamation of Norman England and Medieval France.
@FraggnAUT6 жыл бұрын
I always thought the high elven homeland as some sort of fictional atlantis continent.
@eyeofgnosis5585 жыл бұрын
I think Ulthuan is meant to be the fictional Atlantis rather than the UK (which is Albion), also the one thing that really irked me was the way the High Elves just accepted Malekith as Phoenix King. Whilst I get Tyrion had gone mad with Khaine's bloodlust, I doubt a race which has been fighting Malekith and his Dark Elves (which are probably more evil than Chaos) for thousands of years would decide it was a good idea to side with their literal worst enemy...
@xChaos235 жыл бұрын
I always saw it as Ancient Greece, Ulthuan is Athens (Navel based economy and lots of wine and culture) with Naggarond being Sparta (Slave based economy and warrior society)
@eyeofgnosis5585 жыл бұрын
The High Elves and Dark Elves in old Fantasy had a blood feud which was as deep as that between Chaos and the Empire, I mean, the Dark Elves would capture, torture , enslave and sacrifice innocent High Elves for the lolz most of the time

Would you ever consider doing an “in depth” lore video? I’m here because I’ve started the new “Gotrek” books and I never really followed any character besides my boy Vlad Von Carstein in “Fall of Altdorf” (don’t get me started on how disappointed I still am about him still being MIA) but now there’s all these other stories I didn’t follow at the time and it seems like ancient history trying to track them all down, just wondering, you do great work, would love if you did.

End times (and the destruction of the old world) is one of the reasons AoS took off so slowly. It alienated a lot of the playerbase (but lets be honest... the few) that still played WHFB. That and there only being open play ofc. I personally hated playing what WHFB turned into. No max unit sizes just made the game powerball out of control after horde units got introduced (along with magic item/ability stacking) to create deathstar type play. The cost to start was also ridiculous because of this...
